Not a huge amount of enthusiasm but, some little highlights in there for the best sorts of ewes and shearlings, others difficult to place. Today was our opening show and sale of Mule and Continental gimmer lambs, kindly judged by John Wilson, Settle. As expected, after the kicking taken by the shearlings, bidding for ewe lambs was very cautious! Mules sold to 80 to average 74. The very best Continental gimmers got away, topping at 98 but, some of the others were just as well sold as stores. It is entirely apparent this year that no-one wants second rate shearlings, many of which were worth more in the spring so, no-one is prepared to pay a premium above store price for second rate gimmer lambs. The better skinned and white faced store lambs sold well today, generally either side of 60. Short term keep stores would look value compared with longer terms lambs. We didn t have many of the bigger bull calves in today we usually get. The medium calves were a good trade indeed. Plenty of blue bulls range. Continental heifers couldn t crack the 300 barrier today. Plenty in that range. Again the smaller calves were the trade of the day. Herefords good to sell too. Better black and whites regularly 100 to a high of 152. The amount of bobbies brought the overall average back. Next week we would expect a similar number of calves with stirks to follow. Auctioneer s Clerk: Ann Faraday A quieter day in the calf ring, due to amount of grass down for 3 rd crop silage. The stronger Blue Bulls could top 400. Brian Blezard at 450 & 428, The Hesketh Family at 450 & 405 and A & T Smith at 440. Medium bulls Pauline Anderton sold an absolute beauty of a Blue Heifer for 330. The Gibbons family next at 322 medium heifers The trade of the day, like last week was for the smaller to medium types for all breeds. As predicted the black and white bulls were a much better trade, several calves , even the smaller were significantly better to sell today. Less Angus about today, but no let up in demand. Bulls averaged 266 and heifers 160. Stirks followed the calves. Again less about sue silaging. Males sold well, both bulls and steers. Heifers were a mixed trade some proving harder work, but others away nicely indeed.
