2 Saturday 22th September 2018 ANNUAL SHOW & SALE OF RAMS & FEMALES Auctioneer s Report (Stephen Dennis):-The Annual Bentham Show & Sale of Blue faced Leicester Rams was held on Saturday with pre-sale judging duties carried out by Mr John Addision of Barnard Castle and Mr Wilf Buckle of Kirkby Stephen. Messrs Lord s Hewgill flock received the award for overall Champion with a Ram lamb sired by Hewgill H45 out of a G23 Marriforth ewe, later selling to the Judge, John Addison for It s twin brother also selling for the same price to Mrs D Birkett & Son of Barnard Castle. The Smearsett flock of Messrs WA&A Booth of Feizor, near Settle provided the sale s leading prices with the day s top bid of 3100 for a homebred shearling by Smearsett G11 out of a Lunesdale S1 ewe purchased jointly by Messrs WA&E Cornall of Garstang and B & SE Carter of Lancaster. The same breeders also provided the day s top priced Ram lamb at 2400, also sired by Smearsett G11 out of a Hundith Z4 ewe purchased by Messrs JR&A Blades of Hawes. The sale average for the aged Rams was up on the year by 91 whilst for Shearling and Ram lambs, it was down by 155 & 202 respectively. A 94% clearance rate was achieved for the 325 BFL Rams forward. The same sale saw strong demand for Teeswaters Rams, Shearlings selling to 520 (DJ & J Waine, Kendal) up 104 on the year. Texel Shearlings to 980 (WJ & JG Bell, Hawick) up 82, Beltex x Shearlings to 720 (T Craddock & Son, Clitheroe) up 37 and Suffolk Shearlings to 640 (WJ & GJ Bell, Hawick) up 29 on the year. Types with size and power good to sell regularly The first prize Suffolk lamb to 520 from ID & JC Briggs while crossbred tups hit 720 from Jason Craddock. A handful of Beltex females sold to 195 on two occasions from J & JE Bradley.

4 Tuesday 25 th September 2018 SALE OF STORE LAMBS FORWARD Overall Average: Top Av Top Price From: Auctioneer s Report (Greg MacDougall):- Che PR Beresford, Hawes The Ctl S Gunn, Milnthorpe largest show forward of the season so far with a Ham Hrd Mas Mule Suf W&H Blackwell, Slaidburn B Dickinson & Co Kendal D Eames, Abbeystead EJ & JE Wilkinson, Long M Stephenson, Newby large audience of buyers in attendance travelling from Lincolnshire and Wales as well as all three local Counties. A decent show for quality with some nice consignments of Continental and Suffolk lambs. More than half of the entry was made up of Mule wethers (Overall average 52.24). Strongest Continental and Suffolk lambs with medium term lambs either side of 55 and long term sorts selling in the 40s. Best bred lambs selling at extreme rates with plenty of pens topping at for 11 Beltex lambs from S Gunn. Strongest pens of Mule lambs topping at 68 from EJ & JE Wilkinson with Masham to 62 from D Eames. Medium sorts with small lambs More horned lambs in the entry also with most pens Top draw Swale lambs from B Dickinson & Co, Brockstones topped the section at 42 for a pen of 54. Included in the entry was a dispersal sale of Badger Faced sheep on behalf of NG Bailey Ltd, Denton Park Estate. Younger ewes sold to 57 x 2 with others to 52. Gimmer lambs topped at 55. Enchanted Holsteins Pedigree heifer Marlingford Ponder Kathleen 4 out of an EX90 cow was sold 10 days calved giving 35l. She hit the top price of the day at Top end heifers , the next draw Ted Fearon s cow peaked at A somewhat selective trade on the whole although there is hopefully light at the end of the tunnel with the recent milk price increase. A nicer show for quality lambs with more meat on offer. A respectable overall average of 169.4p being achieved (SQQ 171.8p). Commercial export lambs 170p- 180p with nicer sorts 190p- 200p. Best bred lambs 200p- 230p topping at 246.9p from ME Wannop who also topped per head at an outstanding consignment of quality averaged Lambs weighing 45kg + selling between with heavy types depending on quality. Mule lambs 150p- 158p or per head to top at 75. A highlight of the night was the annual Show of Masham lambs. Judged by Arthur Slack, first prize rosette was awarded to T & D Wright, Alcocks realising 81 with the same home achieving 80 for 2 nd prize. Lightweight Continentals 150p- 170p with horned lambs 110p- 130p topping at 153.3p.
