It was 16 year old Rachel, a member of Slaidburn Young Farmers Club and pupil at Nelson & Colne College who earlier in the day had picked up first prize rosette in the 12 to 16 year old age group class, with her Zwartbles cross Jacob gimmer lamb, prepared to perfection and expertly handled, which caught the eye of judges David & Laura Coar, Darwen, Lancashire. Pipping her cousin, to the top spot of champion young handler, her lamb later sold for 110 to Clapham Brothers, Sowerby Bridge. Cousin, Richard Seed, vice chairman of Chipping Young Farmers club and pupil at Newman College, was not disappointed though he won the reserve champion young handler award and first prize rosette in the 17 to 27 year old age group class with his Beltex gimmer lamb which was trimmed and presented to a very high standard, which sold for 110 to Tim Jackson, Goosnargh, Preston. Second prize winner, Laura Banks, Hutton, Preston achieved the top price of the day with her Beltex gimmer lamb, sired by Airyolland Pilot, which sold for 165 to AC Dent & EO Nixon, Harwood in Teasdale, County Durham.The 11 year and under class was the most competitive of all the classes, with Sam Phillipson, Briercliffe, Burnley winning the top spot in this class. Sister-Molly won the second prize award and Ryan Haworth, Rossendale picked up the third prize. The show was very kindly sponsored by Judith Smith of JS Accountancy, Clitheroe. David Booth, Broom House chose two very good heifers with very correct udders. The champion from Colin Singleton a Ginary Twist daughter sold for 2250 to WA Blockley and reserve-lee Donkin, heifer went to RT Halhead at As the sale progressed it was clear that customers wanted milk and the top price 2500 of the day came for the last animal in the ring from James & Anne Rogerson. Their Shotgun daughter, giving 38 litres sold at 2500 to RT Halhead. Colin Singleton hit 2450, 2350 & 2300 all three giving 30kgs. With 14 heifers selling for 2000 or more trade could be described as excellent! In the commercial section both Peter Smith and David Graveston showed some smart heifers and achieved 2200 and Surprise of the day came from a Shorthorn from Messrs Throup selling to Chris Harrison at In calf cows sold to 1450 and in calf heifers to Heifer calves from RG Johnson sold to 390 and a group of spring born Friesain stirks from Dumfries sold to 600. Topping the sale at 405 was an in lamb Suffolk ewe from David Williams, Denbighshire, scanned in lamb for twins to the Suffolk ram-rhaeadr Rubicon for January she sold to Matthew Sharpe, Gisburn. Charollais in lamb shearlings peaked at 360 from Robert Towers, Farleton. Chris Pearson, West Marton topped the Charollais ewe trade with a 4 year old, scanned in lamb to Banwy Nightrider due for December, she sld for 305. A run of smart, empty Tullagh Sheriff sired, Texel gimmer lambs sold for 240, 225 & 220 from Alec & Gemma Brown, Darwen. Beltex sheep guru-anthony Thompson, Foulridge presented a pen of ten Beltex store lambs which picked up the first prize rosette in the Continental class & later in the day the overall champion pen of store lambs, they sold for 96 to C Buckley, Huddersfield.
