The pattern is challenging fr the 4-H member s age and experience. The cnstructed garment shuld be the substantial part f the cmplete utfit (e.g., a shirt, jacket, skirt r pants). Accessry items are nt acceptable as sewn items. Buy. The purchased garment shuld crdinate with the cnstructed garment, especially bserving the elements f design in the areas f clr, line, shape, texture and prprtin. The entry must be sewn by the 4-H member as part f the 4-H Clthing prject. 4-H EDUCATIONAL DISPLAYS AND POSTERS NOTE: In additin t the infrmatin belw, d nt laminate educatinal displays and psters. Educatinal Displays Educatinal displays intrduce viewers t a subject by illustrating an idea r fact. Educatinal displays are nt psters; hwever, yuth may use pster bard. Educatinal displays require in-depth infrmatin n a tpic. Displays may take the frm f a three-dimensinal bject, scale mdel, a ntebk, etc. Yuth may prduce exhibits in any apprpriate medium (waterclr, crayn, ink etc.).

2 FYI: Size restrictins n educatinal displays are apprximately 4 x 6 feet. Educatinal Pster Educatinal psters must be n 14 x 22- inch pster bard with a vertical (prtrait) r hrizntal (landscape) rientatin. Educatinal psters: may be dne in any medium (waterclr, crayn, ink, etc.) utilize elements and principles f design; and/r have margins n fur sides; except in artistic instances (e.g., a graphic representatin f a rad running ff the edge f the pster). These exhibits must/shuld (refer t the scre card judging criteria descriptins): illustrate a single basic idea; catch viewers attentin lng enugh t intrduce them t the subject; and/r impress viewers with a specific message and aruse a respnse. Ppsicle Bridge Dimensins The bridge must span 500 mm, be mre than 100 mm wide and 200 mm high, and prtrude n mre than 50 mm belw the bttm f the bridge deck (where the car rlls). The bridge must

6 als be free frm supprt by 30 mm n each side. The bridge deck must be cvered in cnstructin paper t allw a Matchbx r Ht Wheels -sized car t rll acrss. Cnstructin Requirements 1. The bridge must cnfrm t Dimensins described previusly. 2. The cmpleted bridge is t cntain a maximum f 100 Ppsicle sticks (113 mm lng; 10 mm wide, 1½ mm thick) jined tgether with all-purpse, nn-txic glue. NOTE: Crazy and industrial type glues are nt permitted; neither are pins r clamps. 3. Ppsicle sticks may be cut. 4. A Matchbx r Ht Wheels -sized car is apprximately 3½ cm wide and 2 cm high. Helpful Hints Give yurself plenty f time; dn t wait until the last minute t build yur bridge. The glue needs at least 24 hurs t dry and is strnger when allwed t dry fr tw days r lnger. Als, wd jints are always strnger when clamped tightly while the glue dries (try using big paper clips t clamp the sticks tgether yu must remve clamps befre displaying). Even thugh a Ppsicle stick bridge is much smaller, the same principles apply. FYI: The mst imprtant part is nt the deck; rather, it is the steel r cncrete structure supprting the deck. Fr bridge ideas, lk at real bridges; especially railway truss bridges. Als study these bridges: Prt Mann Bridge, the Secnd Narrws Bridge, and the Queensbrugh Bridge. FYI: The Lins Gate Bridge and the Alex Fraser Bridge are nt gd examples t fllw fr this prject because these bridges rely n cables. See the State 4-H Bk fr mre infrmatin.
