Allied Health-Vet Tech address castalalabama.edu 3) GOALS AND SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES OF PROPOSED USE OF LIVE ANIMALS Use language understandable t a nn-scientist. One r tw paragraphs are usually adequate. As per AVMA-CVTEA required tasks, each student must demnstrate the ability t perfrm the fllwing in dgs and cats: Cephalic venipuncture dg and cat Lateral saphenus venipuncture- dg Jugular venipuncture- dg and cat Medial Femral venipuncture- cat 4) PROJECTED START DATE, ANIMAL SPECIES, AND NUMBER NEEDED. OR Species Number needed in first year Number needed in secnd year Number needed in third year RATIOLE FOR NUMBER OF ANIMALS REQUESTED FOR TEACHING PROTOCOLS: Fr example, if numbers are determined by a specific student-t-animal rati, the chice f the rati must be justified in writing. All prcedures will be perfrmed by each student. Each animal will be subjected t a maximum f three attempts per prcedure per day. 5) PROCEDURES, PAIN CATEGORY, SPECIES, PERSONS PERFORMING PROCEDURES AND THEIR TRAINING. Prvide a detailed descriptin f all prpsed prcedures t be cnducted n each species, (Example: IV injectin in the jugular vein, up t 3 ml, twice a day fr six days), the pain categry fr the prcedure, and the persnnel wh will perfrm the prcedure. Fr pain categries see USDA/AWA Pain/Distress Categries n the last page f this applicatin. Species - Prcedure Pain Categry Persnnel Canine and feline Venipuncture C Vet Tech Instructrs and Students: 1. Students will bserve an animal prir t any manipulatin fr respiratry rate and character. Animals will nt be restrained r therwise stressed during this bservatin. 2. Fr all venipuncture prcedures f bth dg and cat the student will gather all necessary and apprpriate supplies prir t the restrainer btaining the animal. 3. Fr cephalic venipuncture, the restrainer will hld the patient in a sitting psitin r sternal recumbency as described is the restraint IACUC prtcl. The student will swab the area f the desired vein with a skin disinfectant t misten the hair making the vein easier t see and cleaning the area f mst dirt and debris. The hair may require shaving t facilitate visualizatin f the vein. The restrainer will distend the vein and the student will hld the leg at the metacarpal regin. Hlding the syringe in the barrel

3 regin s that the needle bevel is up they will insert the needle at apprximately 30 degree angle with the skin s that the distal end f the needle threads int the vein abut ½ inch. The student s thumb may be placed medially t the vein t stabilize the vein and help prevent rlling. Once the needle is in place the student will draw back n the syringe applying suctin t btain the sample. The restrainer then will release distending pressure n the vein. When the prcedure is cmpleted the needle is withdrawn and direct pressure applied t the venipuncture site using a dry cttn ball r gauze fr abut 60 secnds t prevent hematma frmatin and bleeding. 4. Students will perfrm lateral saphenus venipuncture in dgs fllwing the abve described prcedure with the dg in lateral recumbency. 5. Students will perfrm jugular venipuncture with the patient in sternal recumbency r sitting. The student will cclude the external jugular vein, lcated in the jugular furrw, near the thracic inlet. The area will be cleaned with a disinfectant t remve surface dirt and t facilitate visualizatin f the vein. If the vein cannt be easily seen r felt, the hair may be shaved. The student will palpate the distended vein t identify the vein s lcatin. Once identified the needle will be inserted upward, bevel up, at a 20 t 30 degree angle t the vein. When the tip f the needle enters the vein, suctin will be applied t btain sample and nce btained the needle will be withdrawn and direct pressure will be place ver site f entry fr apprximately 60 secnds t prevent hematma frmatin and bleeding. 6. The students will perfrm medial femral vein venipuncture with the restrainer hlding cat in lateral recumbency as described in restraint prtcl. The restrainer will cclude the vein t cause distentin; the student will shave a small area f fur and clean area with skin disinfectant. The student will hld the cat s leg at the level f the hck and may stabilize the vein by placing their thumb alngside f the vein. With the vein stabilized the needle is inserted, bevel up, int the vein. Slight suctin will be used fr bld draw t prevent vein cllapse. When sample draw is cmplete, the needle is withdrawn and direct pressure is applied t the vein fr 60 secnds t prevent hematma frmatin and bleeding. 7. Any prcedure will be discntinued if a patient shws any signs f pain r distress and the supervising site Veterinarian will be ntified. Specific training f each persn fr each prcedure listed abve. Students will receive lectures n prper prcedures and use f necessary equipment prir t perfrmance. All students will demnstrate prper technique using mdels prir t live animal use. 6) LITERATURE SEARCH FOR PAIN AND DISTRESS REDUCTION -Replacement f a live animal mdel with nn-living systems; refinement f methds which are less painful r distressful; and reductin in number f animals used shuld be cnsidered. Include an apprpriate cnclusin such as Literature search verified that prcedures and methds described in this prtcl are currently accepted methds and minimize pain and distress t the animals and that there are n alternatives available fr these prcedures. Accurate, less invasive methds fr the required prficiencies are therwise nt available thrugh mdels r lwer species. 7) JUSTIFICATION OF LIVE ANIMAL USE AND SPECIES SELECTION Alternatives t live animal use must be cnsidered and the lwest apprpriate phylgenetic species must be used All tasks listed fr cmpletin by students are required by the CVTEA as described in the Accreditatin Plicies and Prcedures Manual, Appendix I. All tasks perfrmed by students will be under the direct supervisin f a licensed veterinary prfessinal. 8) ATTENDING VETERIRIAN An attending veterinarian must review prpsed prcedures, especially drug use. He/she must als sign all prtcls. The Veterinarian must have experience with the species fr which he/she is respnsible. All drugs are t be btained thrugh r with the apprval f the Attending Veterinarian.
