Hendersn Centre fr Patient-Oriented Research (WJHCPOR) frm expsure t ptential surces f infectius diseases and t reduce the risk f transmissin f bld brne and ther pathgens frm recgnized and unrecgnized surces. Rutine precautins are based n the premise that all bld, bdy fluids, secretins, excretins, mucus membranes, nn-intact skin r siled items are ptentially infectius. 2.0 PURPOSE Specimens received frm all research participants are t be cnsidered ptentially infectius. The Research Centrifuge Rm lcated in the WJHCPOR is classified as a Bihazard Level II lab fr prcessing specimens. All users f the WJHCPOR MUST use rutine precautins when handling participant specimens in the Research Centrifuge Rm and ther designated areas within WJHCPOR (i.e. Clinical Investigatin Unit (CIU), CIU Prcedure Rm, exam rms). 3.0 PROCEDURE The applicatin f rutine precautins by the users f the WJHCPOR t reduce the risk f acquiring and transmitting infectius disease invlves the incrpratin f the key elements listed belw int gd labratry practices and prcedures. 2 Rutine Precautins SOP-RP-01 General Rules f Rutine Precautins Users are respnsible fr: Fllwing prper hand hygiene techniques: Hand washing (40 60 sec): wet hands and apply sap; rub all surfaces; rinse hands and dry thrughly with a single use twel; use twel t turn ff faucet. Hand rubbing using alchl based sanitizer (20 30 sec): apply 1 pump f the prduct and cver all areas f the hands; rub hands until dry. Perfrm hand hygiene befre and after any direct participant cntact and between participants, whether r nt glves are wrn. Perfrm hand hygiene immediately after glves are remved. Perfrm hand hygiene befre handling an invasive device. Perfrm hand hygiene after tuching bld, bdy fluids, secretins, excretins, mucus membranes, nn-intact skin, and cntaminated items, even if glves are wrn. Perfrm hand hygiene during patient care/examinatin, when mving frm a cntaminated t a clean bdy site f the participant. Perfrm hand hygiene after cntact with inanimate bjects in the immediate vicinity f the participant (i.e. the participant s envirnment). Perfrm hand hygiene after wrking with chemicals, befre leaving the lab, prir t remving eye prtectin/r masks. Fllwing prper glve techniques: Glves MUST be wrn when tuching bld, bdy fluids, secretins, excretins, mucus membranes, nn-intact skin and chemicals. Change glves between tasks and prcedures after cntact with ptentially infectius material. Remve glves after use, befre tuching nn-cntaminated items and surfaces. Perfrm hand hygiene immediately after remval f glves. Fllwing prper facial (eyes, nse, and muth) prtectin techniques: Wear (1) a surgical r prcedure mask and eye prtectin (visr r gggles r safety glasses) r (2) a face shield t prtect mucus membranes f the eyes, nse, and muth during activities that are likely t generate splashes r sprays f bld, bdy fluids, secretins, mucus membranes, and Versin 1 (December 1, 2017) - 2 SOP-RP-01

Fllwing prper clthing prtectin techniques: Lab cats r gwns MUST be wrn t prtect skin and prevent siling f clthing during activities that are likely t generate splashes r sprays f bld, bdy fluids, secretins, mucus membranes r excretins. Aprns d nt prvide the same prtectin as lab cats/gwns and shuld nt be wrn when handling r wrking directly with specimens. Lab cats r gwns that are dirty/siled must be remved immediately fllwed by users perfrming hand hygiene techniques and placed in the apprpriate bins. Fllwing prper handling f sharp instruments: Fr the preventin f needle stick and injuries frm handling needles, scalpels, r ther sharp instruments, users MUST use safety engineered medical needles, scalpels, and ther sharp instruments. Never recap sharp instruments. Dispse immediately. Use care when handling and cleaning re-useable sharp instruments. Fr single use sharp instruments, items must be dispsed immediately. Dispse f used needles, scalpels and ther sharp instruments in an apprpriate puncture prf bihazard Sharps cntainer. Fllwing prper respiratry hygiene and cugh etiquette: Users with respiratry symptms must cver their nse and muth when cughing/sneezing with tissue r mask, dispse f used tissues and masks, and perfrm prper hand hygiene after cntact with respiratry secretins. Users shuld islate acute febrile respiratry symptmatic participants away frm thers in cmmn waiting areas, if pssible. Fllwing prper cleaning f equipment and furniture: Users must wipe dwn all equipment and furniture (i.e. exam beds, visitr chairs) with Oxivir wipes fllwing use by participants fr rutine cleaning and disinfectin f frequently tuched surfaces. Fllwing prper handling and transprting f used/dirty linen: Users must dispse used/dirty linens in prper bins prvided in designated areas within WJHCPOR t prevent skin and mucus membrane expsures and cntaminatin f clthing and t avid transfer f pathgens t ther participants and r the envirnment. 4 Rutine Precautins SOP-RP-01 Fllwing prper dispsal f wastes: Users must ensure safe waste dispsal in the apprpriate waste stream. See Dispsal f Bihazardus and Sharps Waste SOP. Treat waste cntaminated with bld, bdy fluids, secretins, mucus membranes and excretins as bihazardus waste. Human tissues and labratry waste that is directly assciated with specimen prcessing shuld als be treated as bihazardus waste. Kingstn General Health Research Institute (KGHRI) is respnsible fr: Prviding rientatin and training n general rules f rutine precautins. Psting visual alerts at the entrance t the WJHCPOR instructing persns with respiratry symptms t practise prper respiratry hygiene/cugh etiquette. Making hand hygiene resurces, tissues and masks available in cmmn waiting areas and in areas used fr the evaluatin f participants. Prviding users f WJHCPOR with access t PPE (labratry cats, safety glasses, glves) in designated areas in WJHCPOR. Prviding users f WJHCPOR with access t Sharps cntainers and ther bilgical waste dispsable cntainers in designated areas in WJHCPOR. Prviding users f WJHCPOR with access t used/dirty linen bins in designated areas in WJHCPOR.
