One r tw paragraphs are usually adequate. As per AVMA-CVTEA required tasks, each student must demnstrate the ability t crrectly perfrm the fllwing in dgs and cats: standing restraint sternal recumbency restraint lateral recumbency restraint cephalic venipuncture restraint saphenus venipuncture restraint jugular venipuncture restraint restraint fr eye and ear medicatins 4) PROJECTED START DATE, ANIMAL SPECIES, AND NUMBER NEEDED. Species OR Number needed in first year Number needed in secnd year Number needed in third year RATIOLE FOR NUMBER OF ANIMALS REQUESTED FOR TEACHING PROTOCOLS: Fr example, if numbers are determined by a specific student-t-animal rati, the chice f the rati must be justified in writing. All prcedures will be perfrmed by each student. Each animal will be subjected t a maximum f three attempts per prcedure per day. 5) PROCEDURES, PAIN CATEGORY, SPECIES, PERSONS PERFORMING PROCEDURES AND THEIR TRAINING. Prvide a detailed descriptin f all prpsed prcedures t be cnducted n each species, (Example: IV injectin in the jugular vein, up t 3 ml, twice a day fr six days), the pain categry fr the prcedure, and the persnnel wh will perfrm the prcedure. Fr pain categries see USD A/AWA Pain/Distress Categries n the last page f this applicatin. Species - Prcedure - Pain Categry - Persnnel Canine and feline - Physical Restraint fr Examinatin and prcedures -C - Vet Tech Lab Instructrs and Students 1. Students will bserve an animal prir t any manipulatin fr respiratry rate and character. Animals will nt be restrained r therwise stressed during this bservatin. 2. Students will perfrm standing restraint n dgs by gently wrapping ne arm arund the dg s neck and pulling the head clse t their shulder, keeping cntrl f the head. The ther arm is placed under the abdmen with the fingers twards the drsum and tucked clse t the bdy. Feline standing restraint will be perfrmed by grasping the cat s lse skin behind the neck between the shulders with their dminant hand and hlding the cat clse t their bdy with the ther arm ver the cat s back and hand secured under abdmen. Students will use the least amunt f frce necessary t achieve

3 secure restraint withut undue stress n the patient. 3. Students will perfrm sternal restraint n dgs by starting frm standing restraint and mving the arm frm under the abdmen t behind the stifles. With gentle pressure, push the stifles frward bringing the dg t a sit, mving same arm t side f dg s bdy and then guide t dg dwn t sternal by psitining the dg against their shulder and bdy and pressing dwn while pushing the frnt legs frward. Students will perfrm sternal restraint n cats by starting with standing restraint and pressing dwn n the hips gently t lwer the back end and then using their free arm snug the cat s bdy t theirs and place the hand behind the elbws. The student s bdy will set slightly ver the cat s back. Alternate sternal restraint fr cats may be perfrmed by securing the cat s bdy between the frearms with the head facing away frm restrainer, the head is immbilized using bth hands with thumbs n tp f head behind ears and fingers laced under jaw. 4. Students will perfrm lateral restraint n dgs starting frm standing restraint. The student will mve the arm arund the dg s neck t ver the back f the dg s neck and reaching between the frnt legs grasp the inside frnt leg. Next the student will mve the arm that is under the abdmen t ver the back and reach between the rear legs and grasp the inside leg at the hck. The student will lift the dg and slide the dg t lateral recumbency by supprting the back f the dg against their bdy. Lateral recumbency is secured by placing the frearm hlding the frnt legs against the neck and the ther arm alng the rump and hlding the hcks secure. The students will perfrm lateral restraint n cats by grasping the cat s scruff with their thumb twards the cats nse, the ther hand will grasp the back legs abve the hcks with ne finger between the legs fr secure grip. The cat will be gently stretched and rtated nt its slide with the cat s back resting against the frearm that is hlding the scruff. 5. T perfrm cephalic venipuncture restraint n dgs r cats, the students will start with the patient in sternal restraint. Fr left cephalic venipuncture in dgs, the right arm will secure the head brining the nse tward the students shulder while the left hand will crss ver the dg s back and rest under the left elbw pushing the leg frward, the thumb will be placed ver the leg medially then clamped dwn and rlled laterally t cclude the vein. Fr left cephalic venipuncture in cats, the right hand will hld the cat s scruff while the left arm will hld the cat snug t the students chest and the left hand will secure the elbw allwing fr the thumb t grasp acrss the leg medially and rll the vein laterally. Students may als use the left pinky finger t secure the right frnt leg t their palm. 6. The students will perfrm restraint techniques fr accessing the lateral saphenus vein in the dg and the medial saphenus vein in the cat. Bth techniques start with the patient in lateral recumbency. Fr dgs, the student will grasp bth frnt legs, with a finger between the legs fr supprt, while keeping adequate pressure n the neck with the same frearm. The ther hand shuld encircle the uppermst leg just abve the stifle ccluding the vein and causing it t distend. Fr cats, the student will hld the cat s scruff and with the palm f the ther hand retract the uppermst paw t the bdy and at the same time apply pressure t the inguinal regin f the lwer leg whereby ccluding the vein and causing it t distend. 7. Students will demnstrate restraint fr jugular venipuncture starting with patient in sternal recumbency fr cats and small t medium dgs. Large dgs may be psitined in sternal recumbency r sitting. Frm sternal recumbency the student will grasp the patient s frnt leg s at the carpal jints and pull the frnt legs ff the edge f the exam table with ne hand. Using the ther hand the student will extend the patient s neck by grasping the muzzle and directing the nstrils t the ceiling whereby expsing the jugular furrw. 8. Restraint fr applicatin f eye r ear medicatins will utilize sternal restraint fr bth dgs and cats, using ne hand t hld the snut t minimize head mvement 9. Students will terminate any prcedure shuld a patient shw any symptms f pain r distress and they will immediately ntify the supervising veterinarian. Specific training f each persn fr each prcedure listed abve. Students will receive lectures and vides n prper prcedures and use f necessary equipment prir t perfrmance. All students will demnstrate prper technique using mdels prir t live animal use. 6) LITERATURE SEARCH FOR PAIN AND DISTRESS REDUCTION -Replacement f a live animal mdel with nn-living systems; refinement f methds which are less painful r

4 distressful; and reductin in number f animals used shuld be cnsidered. Include an apprpriate cnclusin such as "Literature search verified that prcedures and methds described in this prtcl are currently accepted methds and minimize pain and distress t the animals and that there are n alternatives available fr these prcedures." Accurate, less invasive methds fr the required prficiencies are therwise nt available thrugh mdels. 7) JUSTIFICATION OF LIVE ANIMAL USE AND SPECIES SELECTION Alternatives t live animal use must be cnsidered and the lwest apprpriate phylgenetic species must be used. All tasks listed fr cmpletin by students are required by the CVTEA as described in the Accreditatin Plicies and Prcedures Manual, Appendix I. All tasks perfrmed by students will be under the direct supervisin f a licensed veterinary prfessinal. 8) ATTENDING VETERIRIAN An attending veterinarian must review prpsed prcedures, especially drug use. He/she must als sign all prtcls. The Veterinarian must have experience with the species fr which he/she is respnsible. All drugs are t be btained thrugh r with the apprval f the Attending Veterinarian.
