2 MARKET REPORT FOR TUESDAY 11TH APRIL A few less forward this week, due to the cautious approach from vendors thinking that bank holiday and lack of processing days in abattoirs would reduce the prices. But to the contrary this would be one of the better markets of the week for trade and many vendors missed out on the good prices achieved. Some would have been dearer than the week before. Heavy lambs like many places are harder to sell, with some lamb s 10kg heavier making the same money (for example 47kg against 57kg). More sheep will encourage even more buyers. We have 5 buyers with 8 accounts each week wanting lambs and ewes of all types, shapes and sizes, come and see for yourself. If you have some to market please contact Alastair, who will then be able to encourage buyers to come, if they have a better idea of what will be for sale on the day. Old Season Lambs Sold at 10.30am Auctioneer Alastair Brown Light weight Just one in this section from A Berks, weighing 31kg topping at 52.70, a lean well covered lamb that wouldn t have met a deadweight specification on weight, therefore being penalised on the grid. A better return was achieved by selling liveweight kg 170p or p or p or Standard weight Only one pen forward in this category taking top price of the day to 190p per kilo for Beltex x lambs from Charles Vernon-Miller kg 190p or p or p or Medium weights Next top price of the day went to a pen of 43.5kg lambs from Joe Tomlin at 189p or 82.20, next top went to RM Elgin & Son Ltd with their 41kg lambs at 184.5p, at the same money Mark Greenaway with his 40kg lambs and others at 184p. Next top price went to Pip Careless with a pen of 41.5kg lambs at 183p. An entry from GF Heath & Son topped at for 44.5kg lambs. Lean lambs lacking in meat coverage were harder to sell, but the demand did put them to a good price.

Top price which was way past the national average, a pen of 47kg Suffolks lambs from RH Quinney at 178p or 83.66, with others a couple of pence behind at 176p or Will Gabb topped at 174.5p or for his wind swept 47kg Suffolks, just behind that Pip Careless at 174p. Heavier lambs, 51kg topped at 161p for GF Heath & Son or 82.11, and some 52kg topped at 155p for Joe Tomlin kg 155p or p or p or Over 52kg Another 10kg on lambs are realising per head similar money to the previous weight category, topping at or 146p for 57.5kg lambs from GF Heath & Son, and or 143p for Pip Careless. 52+kg 143p or p or p or New Season Lambs - 15 Auctioneer Alastair Brown A entry of good light lambs from Joe Tomlin, and as we move in to more lambs being on offer, many abattoirs are making the change over, creating more demand with increased numbers. Prices topped at 237p for some 34.5kg lambs or per head for 36kg. Demand for these types will be high in the next few weeks. 4 Cull Ewes & Rams - 42 Auctioneer A smaller entry this week met another strong trade for the quality forward. Some very good types topped at 98 for John Peebles with 2 Charollais ewes, and 91 for a Suffolk, also at 91 a Zwartble ewe from FH Loggin & Sons. R & J Baldwyn topped at 86 for Charollais, and 77 for his Mules, other Mules from Chris Slatter topped at 74.50, John North topped at 71 for his Mules, with other Mules from A Berks topping at 70, and 69 from Peter Gwilliam. Some smart Beltex ewes topped at for Charles Vernon-Miller. Buyers require meat on a carcase to be able to sell them, and very plain ewes are a bit of a gamble, as they can get condemned due to emaciation, with a cost of approximately 8 to process a sheep in the abattoir, it is a serious cost if the sheep is lacking in meat coverage to sell their customers. Top Price Average Price Ewes Ewes & Lambs - 5 Auctioneer Alastair Brown Slow to come forward in this section for the high demand, they may look well sold in comparison to later on in the year. With high lambing numbers quoted all round, and more breeding ewes on farms this year, numbers may be plentiful? We will have to wait and see. Buyers are keen as it is a cheap way to get to be a sheep farmer, with no labour or sheds needed to lamb ewes. FH Loggin & Sons entered 5 Zwartble x ewes with very young Texel x lambs at foot, realising from 105 per outfit for singles and for doubles. More Needed. 6 SALE REPORT FARM DISPERSAL PIKES FARM, HAVERSHAM, MILTON KEYNES On Saturday 1 st April, Bletsoes conducted a highly successful sale of modern and vintage Farm machinery at Pikes Farm, Haversham, Milton Keynes. The principal vendor was Mrs PA Marshall, who sold some 350 Lots of well -maintained machinery and agricultural equipment without reserve, having sold the farm and now retiring. The second main vendor was John Johnson, who sold 100 lots of vintage items and 8 fully and partly restored tractors. There were a further 200 lots which were included from local farms. This Sale attracted tremendous interest, with buyers from Wales, Scotland, Ireland and all over England. The Sale started at 11.00am, but by 9.00am there was a good crowd gathering, and by 11.00am it was more like a Point to Point meeting, and the buyers remained throughout the day. Bletsoes two veteran Auctioneers, Brian Pile and Andrew Wager, conducted the sale, splitting the selling between them. As usual, the sale commenced with the smaller lots in and around the buildings. A collection of Pitchforks 20, a Bench Vice 100, Hand Tools 40, Garden Cultivator 140, Lister engine 70, Lifting Chains 60, Milking Buckets 80, Seed Fiddle 40, and these lots set the trend for the day. Then out into the field to the machinery and cattle equipment.

KUHN Spinner 1,450, Ferguson 2 Furrow Plough 280, Mole Ploughs 1,140, 720 and 230, McHale Bale Carrier 870, Parmiter Post Rammer 900, Kinghitter Post Rammer 2,000, Vicon Grass Rake 2,550, Lemkin 3 Furrow Plough 1,900, Marshall 24 Bale Trailer 3,100, Tanco Slurry Tanker 1,950, Krone Round Baler 3,400, 1953 Diesel Ferguson TE 20 1,900, MKF 135 with Loader 3,900, MF 565 3,000, MF 690 with Loader 4,100, Deutz Fahr with Loader 7,000, John Deere 5100k with Loader 31,000, and SWB hard top Land Rover 9,800. The Sale then moved on to John Johnson s collectors items. There was keen interest in all the various spares, with plenty of competition. The machinery saw MF Manure Spreader 1,400, MF20 Pick up Baler 1,500, Single Axle Tipping Trailer 1,100; then the Tractors: Ford 3000 non-runner 880, Ford ,550, Ferguson Petrol Paraffin TE 20 1,400, MF 250 3,400, MF 135 4,400 and MF 148 with multi power 6,000 and 5,600. After that there was a very varied collection of lots from 1 to 5,000. Krone Round Baler 5,000, Claas Hay Rake 3,300, Wood Chippers 1,950 and 1,200, Kidd Saw Bench 390. This sale was one of the best seen in the area for a long time, and proves yet again that no matter what you have to sell, how little or how much, a well-run Auction is the way to go.
