2 Monday 14 th September 60 PRIME CATTLE & BARREN COWS 10.45AM Auctioneer: Simon Alford Prime cattle to 208ppk and 1452 Barren cows to 135ppk and 1030 Prime Cattle Best prime sold to 208ppk & 1452 for Keith Rowell of Crockernwell with a 28 month old Charolais steer, others with the same comments from Keith ran to 202ppk & Well finished close to thirty month s Charolais heifers from Robert & Janet Legg of Dunchideock saw a high of 198ppk & 1344 whilst Limousin steers from Phillip Haydon of Cheriton Bishop realised Barren Cows Monday saw the ever widening gap between farm assured and non-assured barreners broadening again. Very well finished sorts from Ron Andrew of South Brent peaked at 135ppk ( 1027) for a Simmental whilst his 916kg Angus cross cow totalled More well fleshed cows from AR Quick & Partners of Lapford saw Limousin s to 134ppk ( 971) and Blues to 117ppk whilst Michael Vooght of Hennock made 125ppk ( 831) of his Charolais cow. South Devon s from Paul Bowden of Ashburton ran to 119ppk as cracking Simmentals from Keg & Kath Hoskin of Christow realised to 965 (x2). Best dairy bred cows came from Richard & Sacha Palfrey of Longdown with their Holstein Friesian selling for 118ppk & 904. This means that beef and lamb from the region that meets the specific criteria as set out below, is eligible to carry the PGI logo and can be badged as West Country and promoted on the basis of their rearing environment. Born, reared and finished within the West Country Region comprising of the six counties of Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire Are no more than 12 months of age (Lamb Only) Are from a Farm Assured holding (Information from your Farm Assurance assessment may be required to check the PGI eligibility of the farm) During their lifetime have been fed on minimum 70% forage based diet and have received a suitable period of grazing, typically 2 months. (Supplements may have been fed at weaning and finishing stage and ingredients and purchasing records have been maintained). For your stock to be sold as West Country Beef & Lamb under this scheme we must have a completed and signed declaration which can be found on the bottom of our Sheep Entry Forms or from the Market Office please ensure you have this with you when unloading. 3 1932 SHEEP 9.30AM Auctioneer: Russell Steer PRIME LAMB As feared, the trade of the last two weeks could not be upheld, all averages were down with all types of lamb affected. Best shaped and covered sorts the least effected, with these still seeing plenty of competition, albeit at lower levels. Plainer or badly bred sorts, or those carrying a lot of fleece/rainwater were harder to place, and many would have looked better sold on Friday in the stores. Best shaped heavies to 75 for Paul Parker of Ashburton with 57kg Texel crosses, closely followed by a shapely 48kg Charollais at 74 (154ppk) for CM & N Hammett of Colyton who had heavier lambs at 70 as did Des Gillbard of Cruwys Morchard at & kg weights sold to 70 for Richard Rogers of South Milton, for SJ Middleton of Cullompton and 69 for Les & Martin Barons of Diptford who also sold 49kgs at 69. A priced matched by Mark Harvey of Slapton who saw his two pens of lighter 46kg lambs race away to & 70 (154 & 152ppk). 45kgs peaked at for Ray & Sylvia Toms of Cheriton Bishop and 65 for Rob James of Chawleigh who also had top price 42kg lambs at (154ppk). 41kgs to (153ppk) and 40kgs to 60 & (both 150ppk) all for Lawrence Glanville of Holbeton. The majority of lighter lambs are going for keeping, apart from the top three prices for 39kgs being Fred Janes of Moretonhampstead and DW Weight No s Fwd Auctioneer Russell Steer Sale commencing at 9.30am Top Average s Per s Per P.P.K P.P.K Head Head PRIME LAMBS (-3.50) Dicker of Dunsford at & Dr Peter Holley of Buckfastleigh at Top per kilo on the day came from Charles & Elizabeth Godfrey of Widecombe with their 23 lightweights making or 157ppk. SSQ was back 6 pence on last week at 143ppk. 690 CULL EWES & 12 RAMS (-4.00) (-1.00) (-2.00) A bigger and better quality entry of cull sheep sold to a slightly easier trade, particularly for the bigger ewes, similar to reports of sales nationwide last week. A tremendous Cheviot Ram from the Jordan Family of Chagford topped the market when it realised 107, while other leaner rams generally traded Best of the ewes sold to 97 for CM & N Hammet of Colyton with a pair of pure Texels, for Suff x s from G Thomas of Burrington and a massive mule from JT Venning & Son of Fowey climbed to 90. Too many to mention selling from Other good meat mules usually with a few pens of better sorts into the early 70 s.
