1 EXETER LIVESTOCK CENTRE MARKET REPORT August 2017 Tuesday 8 th August Breeding Sheep Sale EXETER LIVESTOCK CENTRE Matford Park Road, Exeter, Devon, EX2 8FD livestock@kivells.com

2 14 th SPECIAL AUGUST SALE OF 5742 BREEDING SHEEP Breeding Ewe Auctioneer: Russell Steer Ram Auctioneers: Mark Davis & Ian Caunter A large entry of older mule ewes met with a decent trade although many lots did look value against the current high cull trade. A cracking pen of 27 NC Mule 2-3 crop ewes from Ross & Emma Sizmur of Okehampton topped the section when they sold at 138. Paul West of Holbeton sold a run of nice NC Mule flock aged ewes that claimed 110 & 101 for the 4T s and 98 for the 6T s, closely followed by Ray Tucker of Exeter at 108 & 106 and also Tony Francis of Okehampton at 108 all with 4T s. NC Mule FM ewes sold to 98 for Derek White of Dalwood, followed by Mark & Henry Johnson of Bridport at 95, 92, 90 & 87 whilst John Simons of South Chard sold his Scotch mule ewes of the same age at 91 & 85. Overall average of Ross & Emma Sizmur of Okehampton made it two Championships on the trot when their fine pen of strong NC Mule shearlings claimed top honours in front of judge Norman Hawkey of St Wenn. The prize winning pen also scooped the 50 cash prize for being purchased out of Bentham Auction mart in the autumn gimmer lamb sales and went to make the top price commercial sheep of the day at 170 to Messrs Steer-Fowler of Kings Nympton who also snapped up the Sizmur s second pen at 162. Second prize shearlings came from Harold Keast & Partners of Crediton who exhibited three fantastic pens of immaculately turned out shearlings that saw his ticketed pen make 150, next pen rise to 151 and third pen sell at 145. Third prize mule shearlings came from a sizable run of quality sheep from Cliff & Anne Williams of Bampton who sold their first pen of nice dark headed sorts at 147 with a further four pens at 135. A single pen of twenty smart dark headed and strong sheep from Graham Stephens of Denbury sold well at 150 whilst all Dallyns Dairy of Barnstaple, Graham McLeod of Swimbridge and Brian Webber of Cullompton all achieved 140 of their best. Also at 140 were Ross & Emma Sizmur s lambed Scotch Mule shearlings purchased as Champions from our Exeter ewe lamb sale last September. In general the shorter number catalogued and then shorter number forward tightened demand with all lots keenly bid for and some buyers going home with unfilled orders, meant trade was strong from start to finish. The overall average for nearly 1500 less sheep than last year was up 9.70 to level at OLDER EWES 2176 MULE SHEARLINGS Leading Mule Shearling prices as below: (change on year) 79 (-236) from R & E Sizmur, Okehampton to 170 (- 55) av. 150 (+ 7) 75 from HJ Keast & Prtnrs, Crediton to 151 av from G Stephens, Denbury to 150 av from C & A Williams, Tiverton to 147 (+ 17) av. 133 (+ 10) 38 from Dallyns Dairy, Barnstaple to 140 av (-81) from Brian Webber, Cullompton to 140 (+ 4) av. 135 (+ 11) 141 (+41) from Graham McLeod, Barnstaple to 140 (+ 10) av. 132 (+ 4) 62 from A & L Gillard, Exeter to 139 av from Swangrove Farms, Glocs to 138 av from B Nicholls, Parracombe to 137 av from W Smale, North Molton to 136 av from PD Rogers, Plymouth to 136 av from MA Johnson Ltd, Bridport to 132 av OTHER OLDER EWES As with the mules some indifferent older ewes would look value against their cull counterparts, whilst the better runs of ewes were in great demand with purchasers looking to secure numbers all from the same farm. A smashing run of Suffolk cross flock aged ewes from Mark & Henry Johnson of Bridport climbed to 141 (x2) for the 4T s whilst the 6T-FM ewes made 140 (x3) & 136 (x3). The Nicholls family of Berry Pomeroy dispersed their quality flock of Lleyn & Lleyn cross ewes to a strong and level trade with the FM ewes selling to 101, 100 (x3), 99 (x6), 97 (x2) & 96 (x3) and their 4/6T ewes rose to 135, 131 (x2), 128 (x2), 127 & 124. CM Hammett of Colyford sold Texel 4T ewes at 126, John Simons parted with Suffolk cross FM s at 121 and Brian & Ian Johnson of Bridport had young Texel cross ewes reach 116. Overall average for this section is NATIVE SHEARLING EWES A varied entry of native white faced shearlings were a strong trade throughout the different breeds. The Nicholls family continued their dispersal with their strong similarly bred shearlings selling at 144 (x2), 140 & 138 (x6) to average of their 97. Romney Shearlings topped the section at 146 & 144 for Mrs Fletcher of Bideford as Tim & Amy Heywood of Rackenford sold theirs at 141 (x2) & 140 (x2), also at 140 were a pen of Border Leicester Shearlings from WR & HD Norrish of Ivybridge. Elsewhere, Dorset x mule shearlings met decent demand for the time of year reaching 131 (x2), 128 (x3) & 127 (x2) for Mark & Henry Johnson and 130 for Clifford & Martin Squire of Okehampton. Average

3 905 SUFFOLK CROSS SHEARLING EWES A fantastic entry in terms of quality sold to a noticeably stronger trade than our July sale and recent sales held nationally. 7 Rural Reflection August 2017 In the last few weeks the sun has been shining and the combines have been rolling across the south west, however as I sit down to write this month s rural reflection, all harvest activity is on hold as we wait for this spell of untimely wet weather to pass! Despite early reports suggesting disappointing yields and bushel weights for Winter Barley in the south west, as harvest has progressed the latest reports suggest yields being close to or slightly above farm averages and good grain quality, which is certainly pleasing to hear. Here s hoping the unsettled weather will soon pass and all harvest activity can recommence. The Basic Payment Scheme has certainly been a hot topic in the press recently since Michael Gove took on his new role as DEFRA secretary. Speaking at the Royal Welsh Show Mr Gove guaranteed British farmers a free trade deal with the EU post Brexit, stating that it would be in the best interest of both parties. However, such a bold statement has quite rightly received heavy criticism considering that the UK has not yet started negotiating a trade deal for agriculture with the EU post Brexit. For the time being we will have to wait and see if Mr Gove can keep his promises. As many of you will know, the government has now guaranteed direct support payments for farmers to remain at their present level until 2022, however it looks as though the basis of the current support system will change radically from the area based system presently in place. Although the exact format of the future support system and what it will look like in practice is still unknown, it has recently been heavily mooted that more emphasis will be placed on environmental protection and that subsidies will have to be earned, rather than payment being received based purely on the area of land that the applicant has under their management control. As Brexit progresses it will be interesting to see exactly what kind of support system is proposed. On the same thread, the Rural Payments Agency have just begun making post payment adjustments for both the 2015 and 2016 Basic Payment Scheme years, whereby applicants who have either been over or under paid in those scheme years will have their payment looked into and adjusted accordingly. The Kivells team are in regular contact with the RPA on behalf of our large farming client base across the south west, so if you feel your payment was incorrect for either year please do contact us and we will do all that we can to help resolve the matter. On to other matters and battery storage has received a lot of publicity in the press of late as the government has recently announced that there will be 246 million pounds worth of investment into the development of battery technology as part of their Industrial Strategy. Battery storage works by storing electricity in off-peak hours, when excess electricity is produced, and then releasing this

8 energy back into the grid during peak periods as required. This provides an important opportunity for landowners, who are in some cases already being approached by energy companies looking to place storage facilities on their land. Some companies are currently offering rents of up to 20,000 per year for periods of generally years for the use of storage facilities. There are some specific requirements for sites for battery storage, including that the land must usually be in the close proximity of a sub-station (and the sub-station itself must have the additional capacity to charge the storage facility) and the site cannot be located on land in an AONB, National Park or land which is in either flood zone 2 or 3. Therefore this does slightly limit the number of landowners who may be affected by battery storage proposals, yet for those with land that falls within the relevant criteria it certainly provides a significant opportunity to diversify income streams. If you have been approached by an energy company regarding this and would like any help or advice please do contact your local Kivells office; we will be more than happy to assist. On a final note, Michaelmas will be a date marked on many of your calendars and with September quickly approaching it is not far away now. For those of you farming land on agricultural tenancies this could mean notices for rent review may soon be served, or, equally, if notice was served last year, rent reviews may be taking place this coming Michaelmas. If so, we would highly recommend taking professional advice, in order that you get the best possible outcome, whether you are the landlord or the tenant. The Kivells team are regularly dealing with landlord tenant matters and have much experience in doing so, therefore if you require an agent to represent you, or if you need any advice please do get in touch and we will do all that we can to help.
