In an effrt t fster further innvatin and entrepreneurial values in students, the University Innvatin Fellwship (UIF) prgram calls fr students t create the envirnments in which their cmmunity can freely build, create, and find slutins t their wn inventins, prjects, and business ventures. If Aramark s specificatins related t genetics and envirnmental cnditins are nt up t par with The Humane League s minimum standards, Frd said, the campaign will be repened and escalated. Yu thught all the signs had pinted t a happily ever after: the cnstant s, I Need Yu! yur representative wuld beg in the subject line. It was like they were speaking t yu, t yur sul. Yu were enamred with their wide smiles and pristine suits, and sure, they said there was enugh f them t g arund, that they were here fr each and every American, but inside yu knew they truly meant they were here fr yu. Yu even started t rep their crew: plished buttns and pins, bumper stickers with their name and smiling faces plastered n yur car. Dn t deny there s a flag smewhere in the trunk f yur car r a picket sign ldged in yur frnt yard, isn t there? S, when yu shwed up t that bth excited, yu hped that the mnths f repartee between yu and Mx. Right Representative wuld have culminated t the best night f yur life. Our true white and blue radi statin, WRHO, lcated at 89.7FM, brught in the special day with the nly way they knew hw: pure chas. Starting at 4 p.m. n Friday, the statin bradcasted live fr 24 cnsecutive hurs. Shws ranged frm fun thrwbacks t genre-specific hurs, t wacky tributes t the late Harambe f the Cincinnati Z. As I pushed my rain-sprinkled cart thrugh the stre, past the hunting-cam-suited blw up Santa Claus and bins f crn-syrup based Hallween candy, I filled my cart with the vegetarian fds I planned t eat in defiant prtest f the inhumane treatment f animals by the meat prducers f the American agr-elite. Vegetarian fds bught frm Wal-Mart, grwn frm seeds patented by Mnsant, the same cmpany prducing the seeds that grw the feed crn that feeds the millins f cws, pigs, and chickens in feed lts all ver the cuntry, wh are raised fr slaughter and then vacuum packed fr sale in the very same Wal-Mart frm which I indignantly buy my kale and my zucchini squash in reslute ppsitin t such barbaric and ill-timed cnversatin starter at the Thanksgiving table. In fact, the hliday alne is perfect fr this next ne! Right after Hallween, I saw a great cmpilatin list f disgusting Hallween cstumes. The usual black face r smbrer-tting and plaid-shirted Mexican getup weren t shcking, but what caught me were the Native American cstumes. Mre specifically, the cstumes depicting prtestrs f the Dakta Access pipeline in Nrth Dakta. Cmpletely f-age men and wmen parading abut huse and ffice parties in cstumes mimicking Native Americans as water prtectrs r dressed in tribal cstume with signs asking t respect their land r warrir is life acclamatins. Sme f the whitest things I ve ever seen are racist r classist cmments disguised in classless, tacky jkes. And that s what it is t them, a jke. And why wuldn t it be? It desn t have a direct effect n them, nr is it their land, nr d they care. The whitest thing is believing that what happens in YOUR backyard is truly the nly thing that matters. As thse peple gt t happily prance abut in their cstumes, actual Native Americans were prtesting fr the right t clean water and cnsideratin fr revered lands, places as sacred t them as any religius land is dear t ther mre recgnized faiths and beliefs in this cuntry. Especially when yu are the kind f annyingly dting pet parent I am. My girlfriend and I even bught the little guy a new sweater this weekend; he gets cld, being a hairless breed. Unlike humans wh can cnsciusly decide Captain Visnack, the Cat Pht submitted by his mm, Skylar Visnack 17 t be vegetarian r vegan, r gluten free r dairy free, cats simply need meat in their diet t survive. Mre than that, their lives are drastically shrtened by nt eating real meat: that is, meat that is dried, prcessed and reduced t its cmpnent prteins and then fed t them in pellets cnsisting mstly f carbhydrate fillers like crn and sy. Felines have evlved with highly efficient kidneys s they can get every last bit f misture frm the meat they cnsume and thus have a very lw thirst drive. If they dn t get water with their fd they can get dehydrated easily eating dry fd, causing kidney failure and death at an early age. S wet fd it is! But when it cmes t dry fd alternatives, there are really nly tw ptins; canned, premade cat fd and hmemade, raw cat fd. Being a cnscientius meat eater, that is, ne wh eats meat when he knws where the meat came frm and can verify that the surce is certified humane and rganic (which is much harder than it shuld be, hence my apparent vegetarianism), buying meat fr myself is expensive and nt really wrth the truble, s ding the same fr my cat is mre than this pampering pet wner is willing t d. But then there it is, I cntradict myself. I dn t buy meat unless I knw it s certified humane and blah, blah, blah unless it s fr my cat, wh has t eat meat, because unlike me wh chses nt t eat meat, he is a cat and cannt be held respnsible fr the evils f glbal capitalism. It s maddening! N matter what yu d, the immral nature f ur glbal ecnmic system is there at every turn, ever present t sabtage every attempt yu make t subvert it while remaining sane and nt turning int a hermit, hunting and gathering, living a slitary Threauean existence, alne in the wds, neurtically trying t escape the blistering irny f it all. Sadly, f curse, being a cllege student, living ff campus and attending classes full time, wh can affrd rganic, grass-fed, pasture-raised meat fr themselves, let alne take the time t cnvert this same meat int hmemade cat fd? I dn t even have time t make mre than cffee fr breakfast in the mrnings. S we pick ur paradxes. In sme cases literally, as we cmpare the prices f canned wet fd, all made frm the leftvers f the meat used t make McDnalds quarter punders, while als filling ur shpping carts with spaghetti squash, certified humane eggs (which I might add are nly $1 mre expensive than the factry-prduced, very much inhumane eggs), and rganic lettuce. My cat s lngevity is very imprtant t me, s I guess my cmmitment t ppsing the evils f factry farming cmes secnd. Strangely enugh, as I write this he is laying acrss my lap, asleep with his head n my right arm, making it very difficult t type. In the end, thinking like this is enugh t make a persn feel the need t wrap their head with tinfil and hide in a basement, researching cnspiracy theries. S I recmmend ding it as infrequently as pssible. Getting int it t much, yu start t wnder if it even matters. Yu wnder if the few measly dllars yu have t spend actually makes a difference in this crazy wrld, the same crazy wrld where peple like Dnald J. Album Review: Parachutes, My Chemical Rmance By TIM RAIMY On Octber 13, Frank Ier (prnunced: eyeear-), a frmer guitarist fr the theatrical rck band My Chemical Rmance, was turing in Australia with his band The Patience when their tur van was hit by a city bus. Everybdy survived the crash, but all the band members had t be taken t the hspital fr treatment. On Octber 21, Ier published a nte n Facebk explaining t his fans that the tur he and his band were n had t be canceled s everybdy culd heal frm the injuries they received frm the crash. On the same day, Ier released a sng frm his up-cming album, Parachutes, called Oceans due t all the lve and supprt he had been receiving frm fans explaining, as a thank yu fr yur lve and understanding i ve decided t release ne f my favrite sngs frm ur new recrd, Parachutes, a little bit early. Oceans is a sng abut accepting lve even thugh yu are unsure if yu actually deserve it and eventually letting it surrund yu and drwning in a sea f it. On Octber 27, Ier published anther nte n Facebk explaining that the album is a representatin f wh he is as a persn and that he hpes his fans can use it t get t knw him better. Prir t Parachutes, Ier released anther full-length album under the band name Frnkier andthe cellabratin entitled Stmachaches. The name change ccurred when Ier realized that he was in a place in his life and music career where what he needed mst was patience, and that music was the thing mst able t give him that patience. On Octber 28, Parachutes was fficially released, and I d like t use this article t try t help yu get t knw Frank Ier, wh published this nte f explanatin n Octber 27, the day befre the album s release: i made this recrd fr the nes i lve, sme f which i am lucky enugh t hld tightly (with my gd arm) n tmrrw s release day while we listen t the sngs i tiled s hard ver. my nly request is that yu d the same, wherever yu are. crank yur stere t thirteen with smene yu care fr, listen, and allw yurself t feel. (we tend t nt give urselves that luxury ften enugh.) The pening track, Wrld Destryer, alternates between heavy and aggressive instruments and vcals that are nt sung but screamed frm the inner feelings f Frank s persn. Mst f the sngs n the album are like this, full f raw emtin. Ier explains in this sng that he feels like a disappintment, like he is always letting peple dwn, and that they ll leave him because f that. He begs that if they decide t stay he ll try t change. This is fllwed by Veins! Veins!! Veins!!!, a sng that sunds like Frank fighting with himself, cnflicted ver his negative emtins tward himself and the medicatin he takes t reslve these emtins, nly t suffer the side-effect f dissciatin. Twards the end f the sng, Ier begins t arrive at a sense f acceptance. The tpic f cming t terms with ne s self cntinues in the next track I m a Mess. On this track, Ier sings abut hw he s tired f being analyzed by ther peple, and tired f pretending he s smething he s nt. I ve tried t find the right lyrics t cnvey the feeling f this sng but realize t d this I d need t cpy and paste all the lyrics int this article, s I ask yu t please, listen t this sng fr yurself. The fllwing track, They Wanted Darkness, starts ut slw and bass guitar heavy. The lyrics explain that Frank feels like he s had a past f peple using him and taking advantage f him. There is a turning pint in the sng where the instruments build up and get mre energetic. The lyrics at this pint als turn frm submissin t defiance, saying, Yu say yu want my heart / Just t tear it apart / But that s my favrite part f me / Yeah that s the nly part I lve, and cmmanding, Yu can t tell me hw t be myself / Just wait, I m gnna try my best t figure it ut fr myself / Yu can t break me dwn again r change my mind n this / I m breaking ut f this, yur darkness. The next tw sngs Remedy and Dear Perccet, I Dn t Think We Shuld See Each Other Anymre are bth used t explain that the things that are suppsed t help him (i.e. medicatins) have been hurting him by taking away his emtins, persnality, and ability t live his life the way he wants. Miss Me sets itself apart frm the rest f the album being the nly acustic sng. Frank lngs fr the persn he lves and hpes that they miss him like he misses them. Cntinuing with the theme f relatinships, The Resurrectinist, r an Existential Crisis in C#, is a callut t a persn he cares abut, in which Frank asks them t accept him fr wh he is. Due t the ambiguity f the next track, Viva Indifference, I ask that yu listen and interpret it fr yurself. The clsing track is an extremely emtinal track abut the death f Frank s grandfather and hw he misses him, thinking abut him cnstantly. The death saddens him because Frank is named after his grandfather and he desn t believe that he can live up t his name and legacy. Cntinued n page7
