1 GOLD COUNTRY ENGLISH SETTER FANCIERS Vlume 17 Issue 07 Jul 2006 It is 8:55 in the city f Fairfield, Ca. and my air cnditining is still running. There were n lng cnversatins with my neighbrs in frnt f the huse this weekend (even thugh I am still trying t cnvince my friend Rbert t cme ut f retirement and help me replace my kitchen cabinets). And funny enugh, it was just t darn ht fr a sane persn t d much f anything ut f drs. I even wke up early n Saturday and again n Sunday with the idea f taking the dgs fr a run at the marsh. But at 7:50 in the mrning it was ver 80 degrees. S it s a shrt walk up t the car dealerships, (with my Camelback n, the ne with tw bladders ne fr me and ne fr the dgs), back t the huse and int the air cnditining. This has been a very busy mnth fr us in the Fancy. Fr thse f us wh attended the MBESC Specialty and the Del Mnte K.C. shws, the GCESF s had sme gd days and great days. My knees are still drying ut frm kneeling in the grass s much the 3 days we were dwn there. MBESC did a wnderful jb. The weather culd nt have been better; the judges were gd. It was als pretty awesme having three very experienced English Setter breeders as judges fr ur Sweepstakes. I am sure they all saw different things they liked abut ur dgs. It was als very interesting t meet flks new t the fancy. If yu ever have the pprtunity t shw a new persn sme grming tips and hw yu use a pair f s r a stripping tl, just remember, that persn watching yu is just like yu were 20 years ag. Please take the time t help a nvice handler. In 1985, I nce had a breeder/handler cme up t me when my first dg wn his first pint. He said, Cngratulatins, if yu re still arund 5 years frm nw, let s talk abut this ne. He smiled and walked away. Nw we are bth a bit lder and he and I are much grayer. A lt f flks have cme and gne, but sme nvices actually stay arund, learn the breed, and develp their wn line with the help f their mentrs. N matter hw lng yu are in the Fancy yu never quite have it all dwn pat. Our next meeting is Sunday 30 July at the DeCells. Hpe t see yu all there.

3 2006 Obedience Wrkshp: Nrma sent an expressing her cncern ver the apparent lack f assistance with putting n the bedience wrkshp. She felt that perhaps the club members might be burnt ut and wuld prefer a fun day instead f the wrkshp. Sctt and Sharn Wdland assured the club that they are wrking n getting judges and stewards and will be putting tgether the flyer. Maryl will put n the handling class. Lis will be ding hspitality. Cheryl will be ding the raffle. Jyce has reserved the park. Mtin was made secnded and passed t cntinue t put n the wrkshp. There will be a shrt meeting f the bedience wrkshp cmmittee at Sandi s mtr hme n Saturday at Gridley prir t shw time. One f the tpics will be adding Rally t the bedience wrkshp. Gratis entry(s) fr wrkers at the wrkshp 2006 Supprted Entry at Richmnd Dg Fanciers (8/5 & 8/6): All is in place. Since we are supprting the entry with extra awards, sweeps and the Meet the Breeds event, let s try t get as many entries as pssible. NEW BUSINESS: Sctt will scan a cpy f the By-Laws and pst it t ur website. Review f the by-laws indicated that 20% f the membership is a qurum. We have 36 members s 7 is a qurum. By-laws als cnfirmed that meetings can be held in the greater Sacrament Valley. Hw/when t schedule ur meetings t ensure cnvenience fr majrity f membership Hunt Test: Will need a status check frm chairpersns at next meeting. Seminar: Denise will be attending a seminar in Hustn n the ins and uts f putting n a specialty. She will reprt n the seminar t the club. She als earned her 3 rd pass in Rally Nvice t cmplete her RN title with 2 nd place in Rally Nvice B. Cle, Cbblestne Summertime Blues, was WD/BW at Ren KC fr his first pints, a three pint majr, frm Bred By Exhibitr. Sctt & Sharn Bth Katie, Cbblestne s Mnlit Kiss, RA, JH and Max, Ch. Cbblestne In a Tuff Spt, CD, RA, JH, NAP, OJP, finished their Rally Advanced titles at ur specialty. In additin, Katie qualified fr her secnd leg tward her Nvice Obedience title. At the TRACS Agility Trial, Max gt his secnd Open Standard Preferred leg. At the same trial, Amber, Timberline s Calif Amber Flame, CD, RN, JH, OA, OAJ, OAP, OJP finished her Open Jumpers Preferred title. Sandi McCue Maddie, Ms. Madeline Kaye McCue, was Best Junir at ur specialty. Cheryl Bibb Ice, Oakley s Ice, passed away at the age f 14. He was always a gentleman and wnderful by and will be srely missed. All the flks invlved with the shw did a stand ut jb! My cmpliments all arund. GCESF gt mre cmpliments n this shw than I ve seen/heard at any shw that I ve chaired r been invlved with. My guess, abut 70-80% f the exhibitrs (alng with several spectatrs) made a pint t bth thank and cmpliment GCESF n a great shw. Having bedience/rally in the afternn (fllwing breed cmpetitin) appeared t wrk well. It was definitely warm, but having it under the trees seemed t keep it frm being unbearable. Yu gt a larger audience/supprt fr bedience/rally by having it after cnfrmatin. We need t ensure the ring dimensin (at set up) meets with the requirements fr rally and bedience. Translatin we need t make sure t tell Camellia Capital what thse measurements are s we get the crrect spatial arrangement.

5 We need t request that Camellia Capital deliver the bedience equipment ringside. If ther clubs need t use the equipment first, we need t ntify Camellia Capital f ur start time and make the request fr delivery. If we re ging t repeat ur use f the under the trees ring fr bedience/rally next year, we als must take int accunt the 10 ft clearance rule utside the ring and blck the area where cars might park. The bedience ring stewards were awesme. We shuld cnsider using them again next year, freeing up club members t either shw r d ther things instead. If smene vlunteers t ring steward (r d any task fr that matter), whmever they vlunteer t MUST get all their cntact infrmatin (that includes , phne numbers, AND mailing address). Whever gets the infrmatin shuld then frward it t the shw chair s the chair can call, write, etc. and cnfirm participatin. We definitely DON T want t discurage anyne frm vlunteering we just need t be sure we can get back in cntact with them. Whatever GCESF des, DON T change shw superintendents Jan & Leah are wrth their weight in gld!!! They stayed n tp f every questin, cncern, and prblem that arse bth befre and during the event. GCESF shuld decide if they want the phtgraph nce, twice, r three times during the curse f the day. There are 3 ptential pht pprtunities (sweeps, cnfrmatin, & bedience). Shw chair then needs t prvide a schedule t the phtgrapher and clearly define expectatins (big shw grunds vs. ne shw chair in search f the elusive phtgrapher nt a desirable task). Our phtgrapher is als the shw chair fr Camellia Capital and is typically running arund madly n Friday getting ready fr Saturday s shw. Cnsider having sme type f water, ice, cling delivery/set-up during the late mrning / afternn festivities ice chests with ice r ice water designed fr peple t dip twels in r grab a small bucket (f ice) t add water t. Maybe even a kiddie pl with small amunt f water (and smattering f ice) that dgs can get t (befre r after cmpetitin). Als peple water, mre s than ther drinks, water is a must. It wuld be a nice perk that mst everyne wuld be appreciative f. WELL DONE EVERYONE! Dates t remember in the upcming mnths: Dates fr the ESAA Natinal Specialty and the ESCNE Specialty: Sept 24th is the H.T.; 25th, 26th Agility; 27th Futurity and prbably Obedience; 28th, 29th Natinal; 30th and Oct. 1 ESCNE.

(Thanks t Orvis.cm fr this tidbit.) Prbe-style Meat Thermmeters The Meat Thermicatr Prbe-style meat thermmeters are the mst accurate and easy t use thermmeters fr wild game. An easy-t-read, precise digital temperature is given instantaneusly in degrees Fahrenheit s yu can determine when the ptimum internal temperature f cking meat has been reached. Knwing the exact internal temperature is the secret t meat ckery perfectin. Mst prbes are less than 1/8 inch in diameter, minimizing any lss f juice frm puncture. Prbes are ften retractable and can be set t the prper thickness f meat, s that if ne is cking a steak 11 2 inches thick, the needle can be set at 3/4 inch. Many versins f prbe-style thermmeters exist n the market tday. They are mre sensitive, accurate, and far easier t use than lder, traditinal thermmeters. Even if yu are nt a game ck, these instruments will save yu the cst in ruined charcal-grilled steaks r beef rast in n time. Tips fr Prepping and Cking Pheasant PHEASANT Hang 5 r 6 days under refrigeratin. The skin and feathers are similar t a chicken's. The skin is reasnably firm and pheasant can be dry-plucked r dipped in scalding water and wet-plucked. Pheasant des nt pluck well n a mechanical duck plucker. Clip ff wings at first jint, legs at jint, and neck clse t bdy. Pheasant may be frzen in feathers in 1 2-galln freezer bags. Liver and heart may be sautéed r used in pate. Rasting: Place in pen pan with splash f water, breast up. Cver breast with 4 full strips f bacn. Place in a preheated 350 ven fr 35 t 50 minutes, depending n size. Test with Prbe-style thermmeter. Internal temperature shuld be 130 t 150 when dne. We recmmend 140 fr best flavr and mistness. Add t yur First Aid Kit I am always lking fr neat and wrthwhile prducts t add t my First Aid Kit fr the Dgs. 7 Old dgs, ld guns and ld flks THERE IS AN OLD SAYING YOU ONLY GO AROUND ONCE, MAKE THE MOST OF WHAT YOU HAVE. HOWEVER, THIS YEAR I have really fallen ff f the Band Wagn getting my dgs t the field. I nly live 10 minutes frm a mnstrus game preserve and I cannt fr the life f me cme up with a gd excuse. Oh, I culd say, I ve had meetings at wrk n my days ff (I have). I had a 3 day cnference t attend in Anaheim (I did) but skipped it and went t a 3 day dg shw circuit. I had puppy buyers cme by the huse t have their dgs grmed (they did and they tk a bit f time t d). I have just nt had the time. I feel guilty as the devil. BUT, nw I have a puppy and he has been s much fun shwing that I really need t stp making excuses and get him ut t the field and wrk sme birds. The Natinal is cming and I sure want t have him ready fr the Natinal Hunt Test. But I want t keep his cat up fr the Futurity. When yu re pulled at bth ends, what d yu d? Well, I guess enjy the time yu have with them. Yu lk frward t wins in the shw ring (had a cuple f nice nes) and yu hld yur breath and enjy the first time the puppy makes cntact with the first planted bird that is sht ver him r her fr the first time. Yu take all f the time t fine tune yur yard wrk s yu re nt t embarrassed when the setter yungster crsses int the ther guy s field wh has a 150 pund dg n a 10 lng line and scares up a rster wh was already running frm the big fat dg. Yu take the time t g t handling class s yu and the puppy learn t becme a team, s yu can quick stack that dg when the judge pulls yu ut with the well-grmed Open Dg r Bitch shwn by a handler fr the pints. Yu nly have ne chance t make a first impressin and yu ve paid yur mney. Hw abut the first time yu grm a dg fr a nvice handler r a puppy buyer: t yu it s easy; t the nvice grmer r puppy wner it s which scissrs t use and hw shrt d I cut what. The first time that dg ges hme with a shw trim, the wner says s that s hw yu d it. Yu are the mentr t the new dg wner. We have all had a mentr at ne time r anther. That s hw we have all learned abut the breed that is the English Setter. S in the next mnth r s, I m gnna hpe fr sme cl weather n my days ff. I need t get ut and run this yung dg. I als prmised a friend that I wuld help him with his dg. I have t say his puppy is pretty birdy. I sure dn t want t be shwn up by him in Octber. We nly g arund ne time let s make the best f it. Yu knw, a gd friend had a dg crss the Rainbw Bridge a week ag. Mari Andersn s Junir is nw in a place where dgs dn t miss dubles, where they never have t get wet when they head int a ditch t pick up a runner and they never miss the Majr. Maybe, just maybe, there will be a lt f time t spend with them again. But fr right nw, I m gnna enjy my time here with these guys. I aplgize if I ramble a bit. Crusader and Gaines succeeded in falling asleep at my feet and I just didn t have the where with all t wake them up. Hug these guys.
