Meeting Schedules Back Cover The fall SDOC trials held on the Labor Day weekend are now over and were quite successful. We had a nice entry, and while the weather was hot, under the cover of the Sheriff s Posse Arena cover, we remained quite comfortable despite the flies. This year we have had quite a bit of rain, and LOTS more flies. Maggie Gee, our intrepid President was kind enough to keep cans of bug repellent on hand which sure came in handy. SDOC members did quite well in the rings with a number of folks earning titles and placements. We have tried to include as many as possible either in the results column or the brags. Apologies to anyone we may have missed. Our President, Maggie Gee offers thanks to all you helped out with the trials in any way. As she says, It does take a small army to conduct an AKC trial! She especially offers thanks to Trial Chair Dora Cressy and our faithful Trial Secretary Pam Sehmer as well as the well organized Chief Steward, Dede Brownstein. Our roadies, Terry Acre, Jeff Robb, Jerry Faulkner, Tom Redmon, John Clendenin, Jeanne Gill, and Toi Tschohl is yeoman service in setting up and breaking down (and putting away) all of our equipment. It FALL TRIAL FUN! Debra Lewis and her Cocker, Teddy took HIT and High Combined on takes a whole trailer to haul all of it. Also, Maggie thanks those folks who weren t showing but still came and worked the trials: Karen Naughton, Talya Bowland, Amy Hendrickson, Anne Hodde, Tom Redmon, John Clendenin, Ann Callahan, Dan Metz, Betty Pearson, Pam Jones, Laurel Drw, Mark Brownstein, Jerry Faulkner, Terri Brown, Ken Brown, Vicki Wilson, and Midge Sprenger who was a wonderful Trophy Chair! All of these folks took time out from busy schedules to help the club, often behind the scenes and without more reward than a pat on the back and a free lunch! We all do love our Club! And most of all, we should all thank Maggie for stepping in wherever needed, providing yummy morning goodies and coffee, etc. and keeping track of all those lunches. She deserves special praise for a job well done. Debra Lewis and Sandra Davis managed to corral all the HIT and High Combined trophies between them with Debra Lewis and her Cocker taking High Combined on Saturday, while Sandra Davis and her Border Collie took HIT. On Sunday, Debra took HIT and High Combined while Sandra took both prizes on Monday. Sandra Davis and BC, Pixel taking HIT and High Combined on Sunday Combined. September Trial Results By Lisa Frankland SDOC had another successful set of obedience and rally trials over Labor Day weekend. This was the first time the Club offered three days of trials (we picked up Los Alamos Saturday date in addition to our traditional Sunday and Monday dates), and judging from the entry, it was a popular decision. We had a total of 78 obedience dogs/98 entries Saturday, 69 obedience dogs/83 entries Sunday, and 68 obedience dogs/82 entries Monday. Rally also had a nice turnout, with 26 dogs/27 entries Saturday, 21 dogs/23 entries Sunday, and 23 dogs/25 entries Monday. The Sheriff s Posse s covered arena, along with plenty of bottled water provided by the Club, helped keep exhibitors and dogs comfortable in spite of aboveaverage temperatures. I ve included results from Saturday s obedience and rally classes, along with High in Trial and High Combined winners from the rest of the weekend. Be sure to also check out the many Club members brags relating to these trials in both this month s and next month s newsletters. The Albuquerque Whippet Fanciers will hold their CAT test which is open to all dogs registered or listed with the AKC on September 21/22 at our coursing site just north of Moriarty. They will also hold a CAT test in conjunction with the Alamogordo Dog Shows! Dr. Laura Hady of Canine Physical Rehabilitation of New Mexico will be the guest speaker at the September 2013 General Membership Meeting to be held at the SDOC Training Facility, 7050 San Pedro NE, Albuquerque, NM on Friday, September 27, Dr. Hady s talk will be the first agenda item at the meeting starting at 7 p.m. Dr. Hady s talk: The Canine Athlete-From Puppyhood to Old Age A Physical Therapy Perspective. The talk will be about 30 minutes followed by Q&A. For more info or questions, please contact Maggie Gee at From our President, Maggie Gee If you are interested in participating in and/or holding Barn Hunts, a new sport recognized by the UKC, please contact Lisa Berry. The local UKC folks are considering holding Barn Hunts in this area. More information about the sport of Barn Hunting will be found in the next SDOC issue. AKC and UKC both recognize Barn Hunt titles although the association itself is a separate entity. Lyn Finley has reported that due to her doctor s instructions, she is still unable to drive for another three months. If you are able to help her by taking her to grocery stores, Costco, her doctor appointments, or to just contact her to relieve her cabin fever, please contact her. Closing date for the next local shows/trials, including rally, is Sept. 25. These are the Los Lunas shows four days! New Mexico Stewards Association will again provide stewards which means that we will probably need some SDOC folks to help steward. Remember!!! You get paid, and get lunch. The money is great for helping out with entry expenses! I made nearly enough last weekend in Roswell to pay for my trip down there. If you are interested, contact Laurel Drew ( ) or Lorraine Lester for details. If anyone is interested in helping with stewarding in Alamogordo, again contact Lorraine or Laurel as additional stewards will probably also be needed there. There will also be a CAT test there. Entries for these shows close on Sept. 17 so hurry to get your entries in! SDOC WEBSITE ADDRESS IS Be Sure to Check the Website for complete class information, class applications and special updates. Training Year (per the SDOC Training Regulations) For these purposes, the training year will be from December 1 to November 30 of the following year. Though scheduled, they might not be announced right away because of all the variables in developing a schedule. So if you want to know if a class is virtually set, contact me and I'll give you a virtual answer. OVERFLOW Someone keeps spreading the rumor that students can just show up and get into our KPT and Basic Novice classes. The rumor is kind of true, but it has LOTS of strings attached. Obviously, students with reservations always get priority. Drop-ins can be turned away at the discretion of the Instructor. They have to show up with a completed application, proof of immunity, and payment in full. I emphasize that this also applies to trainers with privileges, except (usually) for the payment part. I emphasize that Instructors are under no obligation to accept drop-ins. If they feel they've already got their hands full, an Instructor is free to politely refuse to accept a student. They can refer them to our web site for a list of upcoming classes. A printed version is on the bulletin board. WEATHER ALERT Won't be long before the weather turns iffy. Just this reminder to take your student roster home in case you need to contact students if the roads become impassable or impossible. You might make a copy for your assistant so you can split the number of calls you might have to make. REMINDER: Drills cost $7 per dog per session. CGC COMING SOON As of this writing, it looks like the CGC set for October is a go. We've had a promising number of registrations so far. Go, Marcia Sullivan! RALLY RESUMES Jacque Obermeyer and Richard Irland report decent registration numbers for their all-levels Rally class that started Sept. 12. Students are getting in on the ground floor or rising to a higher level in this sport, which has become a staple in recent years. FREESTYLE Congratulations to Pam Jones and Julie Brozek on their recently graduated Freestyle & Tricks class. The class filled, indicating a healthy demand for this performance sport. We'll see if we can find room again in the schedule. To register for any Obedience class, contact: Betty Pearson ASSISTANTSHIP You can learn a lot by being an assistant, so I'll include an occasional bit of wisdom in this column. I've had lots of opportunities this year to fill in for assistants for a class session or two and to assist in entire classes. 5 MANY THANKS! Compiled from Reports from Peggy Chandler, Jeanne Gill, Bonnie Hughes Peggy reports that it was a great day at the Sheriff s Posse grounds for the Saturday Agility Fun Match in August. Everyone seemed to have a good time, and there were several new Novice folks for whom it was their first time in the ring. Any Match is only as good as the folks who help put it on so here are the names of most or all of our helpers. I hope I haven t missed anyone, but forgive me if I did. Thanks to Linda Kipp for designing the courses. The weave pole entrance on the Standard course was a challenge, and you received quite a few compliments on both your courses. Thanks to Mike and Karen Provine, Gayle and Ray Elliott, Gene Tatum, Pat Hester, Gloria Napper- Owen and Chuck Chandler, Diana Lee, Jennifer Allen Richard Dutch and wife, Richard Irland and Krista Polonsky for their tremendous help with set-up and take-down before and after the match. We couldn t do it without you! Thanks also to Phyllis Collier who did Hospitality and Maggie Gee for the sandwiches. These two made our day or at least our tummies happy! Thanks also to all who volunteered to work a class as Gate Steward, Bar Setter, Leash Runner, or anything else that needed doing. Agility is truly a volunteer effort and all of you are AWESOME. Thank you all!!! Bonnie Hughes and Jeanne Gill, as co-chairs of the Obedience Fun Match in August, want to thank all of you who helped make it such a success. We appreciate the time and expertise provided by our judges, Kim Banales, Catherine Waters, Marcie Jensen, Marcia Sullivan, David Ray, Amy Hendrickson, Marcie Jensen, Leslie Swisher, David Ray, and Lisa Berry and our CGC testers, Jacque Obermeyeer and Betty Pearson. You provided a fun and informative opportunity for our participants to practice and prepare for future competitions. Our judges were capably assisted by stewards, Clare Ray, Dee Falk, Talya Bowland, John Clendedin, Richard Irland, Jerry Faulkner, Donna Tucker, Toi Tschohl, Karen Naughton, Tom Redmon, Barbara Mitchell, Donna Sloan, Allie Wimber, Laurel Drew and Pam Jones who were so helpful in keeping things organized and moving along smoothly. Thanks also to Laurel Drew who arrived very early and help with checking in the arrivals; it would have been extremely slow without your expertise. Terry Acre, Jeff Robb and James Gee earned real sweat-equity for loading, unloading, reloading all our equipment and getting it set up. Helping them were Donna Sloan, Allie Wimber, Toi Tschohl and Cathy Robb plus a few more stewards and volunteers. They all did yeoman service! Finally, an especially big thank you to Maggie Gee, our faithful President for her guidance throughout the process of organizing the match and her assistance every step of the way. Without Maggie, we who were novices at putting on matches, could not have done it. She was always there to answer questions, teach rookies the ropes, lend a helping hand and run errands as well as providing tasty food and drink. Lots of folks wore 2 or 3 hats to make this match run smoothly. It s wonderful to be part of an organization where there is such an air of cooperation. 7 August, 2013 General Meeting Minutes By Amy Hendrickson, Recording Secretary The General meeting was held August 30, 2013 at SDOC in the training room. It was called to order at 7:01 by Vice President Karen Provine. Also present were Estelle Metz, Amy Hendrickson, Betty Pearson, Bonnie Conner, and Agility Co-Chairs Barbara Petersen and Clint Wolf. Absent were Michele Lommasson, President Maggie Gee, Terri Brown, Pam Sehmer, Obedience Director John Clendenin and Tracking Director Leslie Swisher. After correcting last month s minutes, in which the first and second readings for new members were switched, Donna Tucker made a motion they be approved. Donna Sloan seconded the motion and it passed. President s Report Not present. Vice President s Report Thanks to Peggy Chandler, Allie Wembler, and Maggie Gee for taking care of mailing last month s Scents and Nonscents. The club is in the process of reaching out to all the rescue groups in town, and telling them of our programs and discounts for rescued dogs. We are also sending flyers to our new neighbors, the Broadmoor complex, to be given out to new occupants. Treasurer s Report Given and on file. Corresponding Secretary s Report Thank you notes were sent July 23,2013 to Billiejo Porter and Sandra Hill for their generous and appreciated donations of pottery for Obedience Trial prizes. Our Rally application for 5/9/2014 is approved. We have a full judges panel for our Fall trials one year from now. Judges have also been contacted for Spring Coronado Kennel Club will not be supporting Obedience and Rally beginning May, We will have a 3 day regional specialty. AKC announces the nominees for Lifetime Achievement Awards. Two of the Judges nominated are Lynn Eggers and Bill Iwanmuto-both have judged for SDOC. The board agreed to cast a vote for Ms. Eggers. Lyn Finley sent a thank you note to the club; it will be posted in the foyer. Recording Secretary s Report The Nosework Odor Recognition Test (ORT) is scheduled for Oct. 20,2013 at the Small Animal Barn on the Santa Fe Fairgrounds. Premiums will soon be available. Mark Diamond s Jeweler mailed a thank you note for the obedience and nosework demos done recently at their dog event. It will be posted in the foyer. Tracking Director s Report Not present. Obedience Director s Report Not present. Agility Co-Director s Report The Agility Department needs volunteers for the September match. This is a great way to learn-please sign up to steward or help. The crates on the field have been temporarily fixed, and will be permanently fixed soon by John Welby. The Dept. is still getting estimates for the moving of the outdoor light switches from the inside of the building to the outside. Old Business John Clendenin has obtained the club s new video surveillance system, and the instillation will be done as soon as the weather cools a bit, and Len Stans schedule allows. Thanks to John for all his research and work on this. Betty Pearson reports that the Nominating Committee meeting is imminent, now that the Fall Trial is over. Please contact Betty if you re interested in nominating someone, or are interested yourself in serving on the board. New Business President Maggie Gee has invited Dr. Laura Hady of Canine Physical Rehabilitation of New Mexico to speak at next month s general meeting, which will be held Fri., Sept 27. Her topic will cover the canine athlete and their need for conditioning, commonly seen injuries, injury prevention, diet, and supplements. Nice weekend, Jane! She also reports that Ranger, the Aussie she handles for Helen Thompson earned his NJ and NStenO ASCA titles. Jeff Robb let us know that he and Django, his 10 month old Aussie had a super weekend at our trials. Django finished his Rally Novice title 3 trials, 3 legs, all with placements! Bonnie Connor caught me at the trials to report that her Aussie, Dyna now has her ASCA Championship Laurel Drew s greyhound, Ellie, picked up 2 points in Roswell bringing her total to 7. Now we have to find those darned majors! Gene Tatum and Bea had a super weekend in agility when Bea earned her 18th, 19th, and 20th double Qs to finish both her AKC Preferred Agility Ch. (PACH) and her Preferred Agility Excellent (PAX) titles. Lisa Frankland reports an epic weekend at the Terriers Only Performance Summit (TOPS) in Denver last month,. Remington, her Kerry Blue Terrier, qualified in every class/event in which he was entered, earning 3 Double Qs in agility, his RN with a first place, and 2 UDX legs in obedience. He scored in the 190s for 1st or 2nd place with OTCH points each time and got High Combined in obedience as well! Penni Adrian s Cardigan Corgi recently earned his Started Duck-A Course title with a High In Herding and his NJP last weekend at the SWAT trials. He is now GCH/CANCH. C-Myste Baledwr Pursuit of Happiness CD, RN, HSADs, HIAS, HXAS, NAP, NJP. Watch out, Clint, Chase is coming after you!!! 10 DOUBLE Q Hats off to Peggy Chandler for organizing an awesome Agility Fun Match! With 42 humans and 52 dogs completing a total of 169 runs, it was a great success. And thank you to the team that built the courses, person -ed the gates, set the bars and stayed to the bitter end to pack up the trailer. What they say about many hands making light work is absolutely true. And it helps to have an energetic and encouraging chair to go with those hands! The fall classes are getting started. Whether one s training need is for a traditional 8-week curriculum or a punch card skill or drill class, there are many choices, so check the website, Classes.asp to see which selection best meets your needs. Here is a word of wisdom from Anne Braue, an international competitor and trainer. The relationship with your dog is fundamental to everything you do in agility. Anne suggests thinking of it as a bank account into which you need to make more deposits than withdrawals to be successful. So give your dog LOTS of opportunities to be rewarded for the things that are easy and it does successfully (sits, hand touches, etc.), so that when we have to make a withdrawal with something tricky that doesn t go so well, we still have lots of reserves! From your Co-Chair, Barbara Petersen Happy Heeling, Continued from Page 4 I've learned to keep a wider eye open for dogs who have a habit of putting the evil eye on other dogs. Also known as targeting or staring or troublemaking. So now I'm always at the ready to position myself to block the offending dog's view or prompt a student to direct the dog's attention elsewhere--preferably on the student herself. Either way, it's effective in stopping dust-ups between dogs before they start. 11 Brags, continued from p. 8 At the Monday SDOC Trial, Hallie Ray and Shelties Zia and Jamie both finished their RN titles with a first and a second place each. Hallie has also been approved (although not yet validated by AKC) her Rally Judging License. Kathy Merlock and Stella Standard Poodle earned their Novice title at the SDOC trials! Congratulations!!! Evelyn Vinogradov and Doc Aussie earned his Flyball Master Ch. Title in Grand Junction, CO on Sept. 1, He has amassed 15,000 points and is on his way to his third AKC Flyball title, the ONYX (awarded at 20K points). His sire, Tuxedo, is closing in on his Flyball Master Excellent title (10K points). Doc will be representing his parent club, the High Desert Sundogs (and all New Mexico Aussies) at this year s CANAM Flyball tournament in Indianapolis on Oct when he runs with the NAFA Region 19 team, the Denver Speed Demons! Sherry Rogers McKenzie, Ch Cannon River Drift Boat UD, RE, CS, CI, TT, CGC, earned her first UDX leg at our Monday trial. Clint Wolf s Golden, ATCH NATCH MACH Kaia picked up her 3rd perfect trial performance at the recent ASCA agility trial. 7 runs, 7 q s, and placed 1st - 4th in every run. Jane Winkler s Dalmatian Chukke earned his MXP at last Dec s. Amarillo agility trial. Jane forgot to brag on poor Chukke before!! Bad, bad Jane. Open A Qualifiers on Monday.
