Scents & Nonscents September, 2010 WHOOHOO! TRIALS WERE GREAT! Teaching People and their Dogs for over 50 years. Inside this issue: SDOC Classes 2 News Notes 3 Trial Results 4 Tracking Class 5 Happy Heeling Agility Front UKI Agility to be Offered Meeting Schedules Back Cover 6 7 Minutes Our Fall trials are now over, and they went extremely well. The weather truly cooperated with a gorgeous day, and we had several special reasons to celebrate. First of all, Laurie Sasaki from California with her super working Aussies did some fine winning, especially on Monday when her Novice B girl, D Bar D Kiss My Grits, earned a to go High In Trial, and her other Aussie, OTch. Navarro s Runs With Scissors UDX18, OM7, RA took Hich Combined with scores of 197 in Utility B and 198 in Open B. Laurie s OTCh. Aussie was also HIT on Sunday. It was a joy to watch these dogs work! Another dog that was a joy to watch was Kathy Klein s Golden Retriever, Yaqui s Reddi To Rock UDX, OM1, GO, JH, RE who earned the High Combined ribbon for a score of on Sunday. Kathy is also from California. Scores from the obedience and rally classes will be found on page of the newsletter. On Sunday only, we had a number of Special prizes. 3 Input Needed The SDOC by laws have long needed a revision to reflect our current business practices and operation. The by laws have not been revised since the club s inception and the last by law change was an amendment in The SDOC board has been discussing some possible changes for which input is needed. At the August 2010 General Membership Meeting, feedback was requested on possibly changing the monthly general membership meeting to a possible quarterly meeting or a bi monthly meeting. Feedback at the August General Membership Meeting indicated that most folks were not in favor of changing from a monthly meeting to a quarterly or bi monthly meeting. Reasons ranged from the monthly meeting provided a way for members to connect and interact with each other, members used the monthly meeting to socialize their dogs, the monthly meetings help facilitate the exchange of ideas on dog training, etc. and going to a quarterly meeting or a bi monthly meeting would actually result in a decrease in meeting attendance as folks would not remember the meeting dates which is currently simplified as the last Friday of the month except during January, and the holiday months of November and December. If you have any other thoughts about whether or not the monthly meeting should be changed to quarterly or bi monthly, please send you comments to Maggie Gee. Another item that has come up in discussion at the SDOC board meetings as a possible change to the by laws is to increase the SDOC board from the current 9 to 11 by including the Obedience Training Director and the Agility Training Director as board members. Currently the SDOC by laws states that the SDOC board includes the five club Officers President, Vice President, Treasurer, Corresponding Secretary, and Recording Secretary and four board members elected annually. Currently the Obedience Training Director and the Agility Training Director are appointed positions and the directors are encouraged to attend the monthly SDOC board meetings to report on their training programs,

request monies and needed items for their programs, and exchange feedback but the training directors were not eligible to vote on motions brought before the board. So members your input is requested on the following items: Are you in favor of increasing the Sandia Dog Obedience Club Board from 9 members to 11 members five officers President, Vice President, Treasurer, Corresponding Secretary, and Recording Secretary and four board members elected annually to 11 board members: the five officer positions President, Vice President, Corresponding Secretary and Recording Secretary and 6 board members (previous 4 board members plus the Obedience Training Director and the Agility Training Director? Why or Why not? A) If you are in favor of adding the Obedience Training Director and the Agility Training Director to the SDOC board, should the Obedience Training Director and Agility Training Director positions be elected positions and nominated by the Nominating Committee that develops the slate for the next year s officers and board members. B)Or should the Obedience Training Director and Agility Training Director positions continue to be appointed positions? Your input is greatly appreciated. Please send comments and ideas to Maggie Gee.

Newsnotes From the Neighborhood Your Editor Evelyn Vinogradov writes: Another very successful SDOC Fun Match has come and gone. I wish to personally and very heartily thank ALL who volunteered their time, and all who participated in the match. It is because we had so many FANTASTIC judges, stewards, set up crew, helpers and participants that we were able to have such a wonderful day! I enjoyed working with each and every one of you. Thanks to you, too, Evelyn. You worked hard to make it a success! And from Phyllis Collier: The summer agility fun match is history once again, and, once again, the great team of helpers kept things moving smoothly and everyone had a great time. As usual, Dick Bruni was there delivering and setting up all that heavy agility equipment. Helping unload and re-load at the end of the day were Melanie Mead, Barbara Mitchell, Al Villareal, Richard Irland, Carl Agee (a great course builder), Ken Collier, LeAnn Miller (also a great course builder), and Annie Newsted. They were joined by several others who kept the rings moving during the match. Barbara Petersen, Marsha Cook, Pat Sayles, Patricia Tresidder, Amanda Petersen and Pete Petersen and Gayle Elliott helped work the registration table. Vicki Jones took time out from work to pick up and deliver refreshments. We ran 20 dogs per hour and until the very last jumpers class, all the time slots were full. A just for fun Puppy Tunnels was added at the end of the day for young future competitors. We had teams from Durango, El Paso, Las Cruces, Santa Fe and, of course, the surrounding Albuquerque area. Everyone had a great day, and we were blessed with a cool dry day (it rained just as we finished packing up!) Thanks again everyone! SWAT has a new date and location for their Fall USDAA trial! It will be held November (DAM tournament on November 12) at the Expo New Mexico (fairgrounds). For those of you who attended the June AKC trial, it is the same location an indoor horse arena with packed dirt floor. They have been chosen by USDAA to try out the new electronic scoring system to provide accurate and efficient results. The test schedule is available on their website. Please be sure that you leave the A-Frame and Teeter equipment at the regulation height when you finish using the SDOC training facility. The next person to use the field with appreciate it. We are looking for a chair for the Annual Awards Banquet which is traditionally held in January of each year. The Annual Awards Banquet is in lieu of the January General Membership Meeting and is a time to celebrate our members and their dogs accomplishment/titles for the previous year. In the past few years, we have held the Annual Award Banquet at the Kirtland Air Force Base Officers Club during their Sunday brunch. Unfortunately, the rules and restrictions to get on to Kirtland Air Force Base, as well as the price increases by the Officers Club and limited times for Sunday Brunch, have necessitated that SDOC look for a new facility to hold our annual awards banquet. If you have a flair and skill for organizing events and would like to be the Annual Awards Banquet chair for the January 2011 banquet, please contact Maggie Gee. SDOC WEBSITE ADDRESS IS Be Sure to Check the Website for complete class information, class applications and special updates. Training Year (per the SDOC Training Regulations) For these purposes, the training year will be from December 1 to November 30 of the following year. The total hours of any class which begins on or before December 1 will be credited to the following training year. September, 2010 Page 5

NEW TRACKING CLASS COMING By Carolee Douglas SDOC is pleased to offer a Beginner Tracking Class starting October 30th, It will be open to SDOC members who have put a CD or a NA/NAJ title on their dogs. We are requiring these titles because tracking instructors need to feel that handlers wishing to learn and teach their dogs to track need to have shown some level of working towards a goal. For us tracking instructor, teaching handlers how to track is a big commitment and very time consuming when done properly. Your instructors will be Rosemary Burtch, Bill Burns and Carolee Douglas. Our class sessions will be from 8:30 am to 11:00 am. We will meet at various grassed and asphalt areas in town. Our goal in instructing students will be for them to have the tools (with our guidance) to teach their dogs enough to enter a TD, then a TDX and ultimately a VST. Our class will be limited to 10 students. Students will need to be willing and able to conduct several 15 minute training sessions per week with their dog. As tracking skills increase, the training sessions will take more time per session, but fewer per week. De4pending on show/trial schedules, there may be weekends where we will not meet. The charge for 8 weeks (may not be consecutive weeks) will be $80.00 plus tax. Call Carolee s cell phone at weekdays if you have questions. 8 Happy Heeling! By Marcie Jensen To order SDOC t-shirts and sweatshirts, contact Estelle Metz Stay warm or be cool, in style! Congratulations to everyone who showed in our trials and got a leg. Congratulations to everyone who showed up and didn t get a leg but had fun! Thank you to everyone who stewarded. I think the trials went very well, and congratulations are especially in order to those people who were in charge of putting it on. Our obedience Fun match was super due to the amount of work done by Evelyn Vinogradov. She stepped right up to the plate and volunteered to run it, and she did a fine job. I would like to toss out a huge thank you to all the agility folks who helped us weith our obedience match. That was ever so nice of you. It was noticed and appreciated. Obedience people, please volunteer to help agility when they are having a trial or match. Belonging to a club means getting involved and getting to know your fellow club members. Obedience is doing well. Thanks to all the people who say yes when I call them to teach. Our year is winding down and everything will slow down from now until January. We are thinking of adding some advanced classes to our agenda after the first of the year. We have a very nice Open/Utility class going and a great show prep class going. Thanks to Janice and Rosemary. However, these are day time classes and a lot of people work and can t get to them. So, I m going to add a couple at night after the first of the year. If you have any thoughts on this, please me or give me a call. Some of you have crates in the building; please keep the inside of them clean. Some of you just use crates that are in the building; please keep the inside of them clean too! No one enjoys having to clean a crate before they can use it, especially if it is their own crate and some one else s dog has fouled it! TAFN, Marcie From the Prez By Maggie Gee Dear Folks: Terry Acre and SDOC want to thank everyone involved in the setup as well as packing up for the Obed/Rally Fun Match on Sunday, August 29. Terry Acre was very appreciative for all the help because in past years, we have been still working on the set up at 6:30 pm on the Saturday before the fun match and trial. Terry and a large crew were on hand on Saturday of our trial weekend to again set up the rings and equipment. In fact, I don t think we ve every had such a large group on hand to assist with set up...and also breaking it all down again on Monday after the trial. It is amazing how quickly these big jobs can be down when we have a crew of eager workers such as these. We appreciate that Terry and Laurel Drew stored all of the equipment from the fun match in their vans during the week so that we did not have to again load everything up to take from the training site to the Posse grounds. We had only a few extra items to pick up at the training site. Going back to the site after our Monday trial, there were 5, count em, vehicles taking materials back, all well loaded which means that Terry and Laurel s vans were really FULL after that fun match. Laurel says that this is probably the first time that her van has been loaded to capacity. Thanks again to everyone!!! Page 8 Scents & Nonscents

From the Agility Front By Hannah Agee Many thanks to Melanie Mead and Susan Neal for their help in replacing all the PVC on the jumps in the Agility yard. It was quite a job and it pretty darn hot on the field. John Welby donated the vinyl tape for the bars. Soon jump cups will be added to all jumps thus accommodating the 26 height. Our new schedule is now posted online. Most of the classes start in September. We are offering several Skills classes. It is our goal to have a different Skills instructor for each 8 week class. We are introducing, for the first time, a Skills class on Contacts and Weaves. This will be a 6-week class, running continuously year-round, with different instructors rotating in to teach the class. Our goal is to teach the contacts and weaves using the same basic training principles at all levels. Thanks to all the instructors for making the new schedule a success! The Board is reviewing the current Dex yellow pages ad for It is costly ($378/mo) and gives minimal feedback. A motion was made that a committee be formed of the last 3 winners of the Sportsmanship Award and the Mike Kuliaska Award to choose the candidates. Also, no one who had won the awards in the last 5 years can be nominated. The motion was passed by the Board.
