Now if you bought an adult from a reputable breeder, it will hopefully come with at least some socialization, but you can t be as certain about some of the other sources. It s your responsibility to see if it has been socialized and provide that. What is socialization? Well, it s the process of introducing a dog to new people, dogs or other animals, new situations, and strange things. For a puppy, this includes introducing them to tall or short people, ones with hats or beards, people with high or low voices, fast movers and dawdlers, people in walkers or wheelchairs. When it comes to things, the list can go on just about forever. Hats, umbrellas, bikes, cars, sudden sounds like thunder or fireworks (recordings of such are available), are just a few of the items on this list. Even other dogs need to be considered. The best age to begin puppy socialization is from 8 to 12 weeks old. Some experts say that a fear-imprinting period is in effect. It can, according to some, last as long as 16 weeks. It is crucial to introduce puppies to different stimuli regularly, preferable every day, and be certain that the experiences are pleasant. For example, feeding your puppy next to a stationary car, motorcycle, or bike can be pleasant and from that you can expand the experience by placing the puppy in or on the vehicle or by moving it slowly with the pup watching and being fed. Standing them on a busy street corner while traffic whizzes by is not going to do the trick. Control the situation and encourage the puppy to learn and not to fear. This applies to all the early experiences your pup may have. If he should learn to be afraid of something right away, you are going to have a much harder time changing that attitude later. This particularly comes into play when you adopt a dog from a shelter or rescue one where-ever you may find it. Rescue dogs may be older and already have learned to fear many things. The key to solving this is to take it slow and easy, watching their body language and backing off if they are becoming too stressed. Back the dog away from the stressor and work closer bit by bit. If you offered a treat and it refused it and showed fear behavior, remove it to a distance where it feels comfortable enough to eat the treat and then begin to work your way closer. This could take several days or even weeks depending on the amount of reaction to the stressor. And, with a Rescue Dog, there may be a lot of stressors, even your body movements if the dog was ill-treated. The key word is Slow. Slow and easy. Puppies need to meet all kinds of other dogs, but one of the best and most controlled situations is to take them to Puppy Classes. These often have playtimes when the pups of all sizes can interact and become used to not being the biggest or the smallest and how to play with others. You do need a trainer (and hopefully your own good sense) to be sure a situation does not escalate and teach a fear response. But, don t limit your pups to just other dogs their own size. It is found at Call Betty Pearson at to sign up for classes. ALL TRAINERS MUST STILL SIGN UP FOR CLASSES, EVEN IF THEY ARE GETTING ONE FREE. UKC Nosework Trial By Dee Falk We had two trials in February. The SDOC members did a great job. Many members qualified in all eight searches and completed all-around titles. An all-around title is earned when a dog qualifies twice in each of the searches (container, vehicle, interior, and exterior) at the same level (Novice, Advanced, Superior, Masters and Elite). Good News! We are looking into possibly hosting an AKC Scent work trial this fall. Rennie Fietz & Benjamin (Poodle) He qualified all 8 searches and completed his all-around Novice and Advanced titles. Mook Sanchez & Bora (Rottie) She qualified in all 8 searches and completed her Novice all-around title. Kathy Merlock & Stella (Poodle) - She qualified in all 8 searches and completed her Novice all-around title. Ava McAfee & Nifty (Chiweenie) She completed all 5 pre-trials and Novice container title. Rosemary Burtch & Ty (GSD) He qualified in both Masters exterior and vehicle as well as Elite containers. Cathy Hyatt & Bosque (Malinois) He completed his Superior all-around. Cathy Hyatt & Omni (All American) She completed her Master vehicle title. Lisa Berry & Roo (All-American) She qualified in all 8 searches and completed both her Novice and Advanced all-around titles. Lisa Berry & Rain (APBT) She completed her Novice exterior, interior and vehicle titles. Dee Falk & Dessa (Dobe) She qualified in all 8 searches and completed her Novice all-around, Advanced exterior, Superior interior and Elite container titles. Page 2 Scents & Nonscents

7 Call For Stewards! By Dede Brownstein On May 11, 12 and 13, SDOC and RGKC will be hosting our annual Mother s Day Obedience and Rally Trials. In order to have a successful event, we will need volunteers to serve as stewards. Why steward? Here are some of the reasons: First, you will perform an indispensable service to SDOC. After all, we cannot have a trial without stewards. And in order to ensure a more successful experience for all of us, SDOC has agreed to provide stewards for RGKC as well. Second, you have an opportunity to personally benefit from volunteering. Here s why. You ll become more familiar and comfortable with how to perform exercises at various levels, something which is particularly important this year because there are significant changes being implemented for Obedience on May 1st. Many new exercises were added recently to Rally as well, including the new Masters Class. You ll learn about ring procedures. You ll have the opportunity to interact with our judges. It s fun and will help make you more comfortable when you show your own dog. Why? Because you ll find out that judges are human beings with faults and failings -- no different from your own! Stewarding will not only give you a close up seat for cheering on fellow SDOC members but you ll see some excellent performances by local exhibitors and out-of-towners. A great learning experience in and of itself. You ll even get a free lunch! There are 3 stewards for each obedience ring and 5 for Rally, so take your pick and add your name to the Steward Signup sheets at SDOC or call Dede at If you wish to steward for Rally please contact Betty Pearson. I cannot encourage you enough to take advantage of this opportunity. You ll be glad you did! There should be a sign-up sheet on the board in the training room very shortly! If you don t see it, give Dede a call. Continued on page 7 Continued from page 5: Has your dog accomplished something new? all the details to the Editor. AND if there s a CH or X anywhere in that title, please include a picture of your dog! Announcements/Other Items: Len Stans has the 2 cooler motors from the old coolers - if interested in them, contact Len. anyone is The next SDOC Member- ship meeting will be Friday, March 30, at 7:00 PM. Key Exchange will take place! Hope to see you all here! Meeting adjourned at Deb Tabor s French Bulldog, Iron 7:24 PM. Page 7

9 A Thank You For Great Novice Trial By Lyn Melin SDOC talent put on a wonderful Novice show. From the beautifully cleared out and set up training room/show ring, hospitality that was delicious and covered all our needs, efficient stewards, to our fantastic and upbeat judges, this was a truly enjoyable trial for my dogs and me. Darby, my two year old, debuted with Rally Novice and Beginner Novice. Despite being patiently taught by our great Rally drill instructors, Mom managed to lose most of Darby s points in Rally but she put in nice, clean Q s. BN was a challenge and she made it clear that silent Mom was not gonna work for her just yet. She still managed to pull in good scores and get two qualifying runs there as well. KC, Mr. Handsome, long coat Dalmatian, did me proud with some very nice heeling. He did point out that my stand hand signal is too close to my stay hand signal and did a perfectly gorgeous stand thru out the sit segment of the sits and downs. Back to the training board. He finished his Preferred Novice title with respectable scores. Kodi, Border Collie, kept his head about him. Yeah! I am seeing some progress when he is stressed. He is looking forward to the May changes in sits and downs and has said the whole exercise is pointless and demeaning in his eyes. However, he did manage to pull off two nice legs in Preferred Novice with respectable scores and win himself a big rosette on Sunday with a Preferred High in Trial. He especially loved the pretty Vase that he got to take home with him (thanks, Janice for shopping for such nice gifts) Continued from page 1 Every pup needs to meet many many people during that time before 16 weeks. Be sure to get your pups their appropriate shots before exposing them to a lot of other dogs, but you want them eager and willing to meet new people and dogs. Does this socialization end at sixteen weeks? NO. It should last throughout their life. After that pup gets bigger, trips to dog friendly places, but NOT the dog park, places like Petsmart, Home Depot, an open air mall or market, etc. are ideal for exposure. Just standing on the sidewalk near a busy store gets your dog lots of attention; be sure to make it positive. Don t be afraid to let strangers meet and pet your pup or other dog, but be sure to control the situation, providing them with a treat to give and showing them (unless they are already a dog person ) how to pet the dog. Take them to SDOC club meetings and let them meet other people and dogs, an excellent place for socialization. One caveat, be sure you ve worked with your dog, particularly puppies, so that they are not out of control and leaping up on people. It won t win you any friends. One other suggestion. Take your pup to obedience classes and later to obedience trials, agility trials, dog shows, etc. just to introduce them to the noise and hubbub that surrounds them. Don t make the first show in which they are entered their first introduction to the confusion that is the hallmark of dog shows. Bring them early or the day before if possible just to get used to the noise. We are unfortunate not to have more close by shows, but getting them out to as many trials and matches as possible can help. Football, Little League, any sports event can be a good place to socialize, especially those with pre-teens who tend to be eager to meet the dogs and who provide plenty of noise at the sports meet. The same goes for your adopted or rescued dog. Just be sure not to overdo it at first. So, get out there, socialize your pup or older dog both at home and in public, get a CGC if nothing else, and ENJOY! Page 9 Scents & Nonscents

10 Novice Only Trial Results By Laurel Drew The Club s first Novice only Obedience and Rally trial was held at the training site last month on Feb. 10/11.
