1 Scents & Nonscents February, 2015 More What s In A Name? Teaching People and their Dogs for over 50 years. Inside this issue: Names, con t. 2 News Notes 3 New Tracking Class 4 January Minutes 5 The Pres Sez ASCA trial info Brags TD Test Report Entry flyer for the ASCA trials Meeting Schedules Back Cover What s in a name? If you ask the SDOC membership, plenty! To me, choosing that perfect registered/call name combina on is one of the most fun aspects of ge ng a new puppy. Ideally, a name should be unique but recognizable; descrip ve of the dog s breed, job, and/or personality without being too stereotypical (e.g. Taco for a Chihuahua); and neither too silly, offensive, nor overly preten ous. Registered names typically include the breeder s kennel name, and some mes include references to parentage/ancestry, or li er themes. And while not mandatory, many people enjoy the challenge of coming up with a call name which es in with the registered name, or viceversa. Anyway, without further ado, here is the latest list of dog names submi ed by SDOC members, all very proud of the fact that they NAILED this naming thing! I only included those names that weren t published in the previous ar cle I wrote in 2013, so if you don t see your dogs listed this me, that s why. Chuck and Peggy Chandler : Lonestar's Can't Touch This, call name Jake, Shel e. Jake's registered name was chosen by his breeder; his call name was stolen from my sister. She was going to name her Boxer Jake, but it fit my Jake be er. Bella Loma Among The Stars, call name Buster, Aussie. We got Buster when he was 6 months old. Chuck works with WWII vets and Buster is a good natured nick name they call each other. Los Suenos Fly Me To The Moon, call name Buzz, Aussie. Buzz was born on the night of the Super Moon in August 2014 and all of the pups were given a moon related name. Buzz is named a er Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon and Fly Me To The Moon is a song by Frank Sinatra released in Bonnie Conner: Shrim s Next Big Thing, call name Vince, Australian Shepherd. Vince is a big boy! Next Big Thing is a song by Vince Gill. Lisa Frankland: Harmony s Cri cal Mass, call name Blast, Papillon. I wanted a name that described a lot of dog in a li le body. My original choice for Blast s registered name, Manha an Project, got vetoed by my daughter as culturally insensi ve, but Cri cal Mass works well on several levels there s even songs by Aerosmith and others with that tle, which es it in with his breeder s kennel prefix and preference for naming her own dogs a er songs! Donna Faulkner: Starfleet The Q Con nuim, call name Qwik, Papillon. We went with Quik because he is a very fast Papillon. We considered other fast names but Qwik went with the Q in his registered name. Page 1

More What s In A Name?, con t Ann Garback: Royal Star of Wonder, call name Kingsley, Papillon. Kingsley was born in December. So I took his name, Royal Star of Wonder, from a Carol. Royal Star of beauty bright was just too long! Karen Naughton and Bonnie Rudy: Dinsdale Chimera Domino, call name Domino, Standard Schnauzer. The name was an easy one to come up with. As a puppy he was all black with one white soul patch on his chin, thus the name Domino. Annie Newsted: Juste's B Do'in Donuts, call name Dunkin, Labrador Retriever. Claudia Saiz: B Sweet Vibe, call name Vibe, Border Collie. Also called the Vibenator, which rhymes with alligator!eldemar s Elsie, call name Elsie AKA Rodent, Border Collie. She acts like Minnie Mouse most of the me, and is just as cute, hence the nickname. Sundown s Buckaroo Bonsai, call name Bonsai or Bucky, Kelpie. Marcia Sullivan: A puppy picture of Karen Naughton;s Standard Schnauzer, Domino, showing off the white soul patch which earned him his name! Las Rocosa Tres Rojas Ms Marlee, call name Marlee, Australian Shepherd. Tres Rojas means three reds and she is a red tri. The Marlee part, she is named a er the deaf actress Marlee Maitlan since Marlee is deaf due to an infec on and high fever as a puppy. Jane Winkler explained how three of her Dalma ans call names came about: Chukke ( pronounced Chewey) means a white spot on a black ground, and was inspired by an Indian professor from NM Tech, who was ge ng his teeth cleaned in my dental chair. Spinner got his name from a horse I knew in my childhood a fabulous na onal working hunter champion. Linus got his name from the Charlie Brown series. Continued next page Page 2 Scents & Nonscents

More What s In A Name?, con t Clint Wolf: Dogs of all breeds and sizes can succeed at Coursing Ability! Aspenpark Rockie Mountain Skye, call name Skyler (Squee on the Agility field), Golden Retriever. Lynn Finley came up with her registered and call names. I liked them and kept them. Where the heck did Squee come from? I had shortened Skyler to Sky. Then I taught her to jump on me when I said Whee!. The command shortened from Sky Whee to Squee. I le it there since Kai and Sky on the agility field sounded too similar when training them together. Besides, I always smile when I hear the gate steward at a trial yell out, Next up is SQUEE! Puts me in the right frame of mind for the run. SDOC WEBSITE ADDRESS IS Be Sure to Check the Website for complete class information, class applications and special updates. Training Year (per the SDOC Training Regulations) For these purposes, the training year will be from December 1 to November 30 of the following year. Absent were Estelle Metz, Michele Lomasson and Leslie Swisher. President s Report An Audit Committee consisting of Laurel Shelton, Annie Newsted, and Nancy Stafford submitted their report. The books are in very good, orderly shape. They recommended that we revive a Finance/Budget Committee to provide a budget, to se guidelines, and to investigate options to handle funds that would be beneficial to the club. We need volunteers for member of said Committee. There are mats in storage that are not needed. They are taking up room in the storage area that would be usable for other items. If anyone knows of a club or organization that might need them, let us know. They would be responsible for removing the mats. Some mats need to be retyped and replace. We re askingfor volunteers to come one afternoon to help. There are problems with the office copy machines. The large one is not working and the small one is not good either. In addition, the maintenance company went out of business. If anyone is familiar with a good place to buy this equipment that include a maintenance contract, please contact Jeff. Vice President s Report Thank you to those who renewed their memberships. The updated directory will be ready for the February meeting. The key exchange will take place at next month s meeting. 6 The Prez Sez By Jeff Robb To order SDOC t-shirts and sweatshirts, contact Estelle Metz Stay warm or be cool, in style! It is February already, and the Dog Show season is starting to fire up. Last month we had several members who went to El Paso for the Obedience/Rally Trial there. Congratulations to Pam Sehmer for a successful weekend down south. I'm sure some other SDOC members had a good time there as well. The SDOC Tracking Test was also held in January, with 2 dogs entered and both passing congratulations!! There was some concern that SDOC would lose wquite a bit of money because of the small entry, but enterprising members organized a Tracking Fun Match and a TDX Qualifying track to help offset our costs. Many thanks to all those involved. I want to thank all of those folks who have already agreed to take on the major tasks we need volunteers for each year. Mark Brownstein and Dora Cressey have graciously agreed to chair, respectively, the Spring and Fall Obedience Trials. Susan Neal and Linda Smith have volunteered to chair the Spring and Novice/Open Agility Trials for the club. Len Stans, Donna Sloan and Barbara Mitchell have all promised to continue in their respective posts from last year. Thank you all!! I will undoubtedly be asking many more of you to help with various events & tasks thank you in advance. Also, please contact Mark B or Susan N if you can help out with the Spring Trials. As Maggie has reminded us, it takes a small army of volunteers to make this club run, and so many of you have been wonderful about helping out. An update on our copier: it died a few weeks ago, making it necessary for our instructors (and others) to use Kinkos or other copy houses for homework, the newsletter and other handouts. I have contacted a number of vendors and will be distributing proposals to the Board for review and approval. Hopefully we will have a new copier in place by the end of the month. We have a number of black rubber floor mats (like those in the training room) that we would like to find a new home for. If you know of another dog organization (or other type of group) that would use them, please contact me or another member of the Board. More Obedience/Rally trials are coming up soon, I wish all of you good luck and have fun. There will be an ASCA (Australian Shepherd Club of America) Obedience/Rally series of trials in Los Lunas the last weekend of March. You can register (get a tracking # for) your dog on-line or the day of the show. Day-of registration for the shows is allowed. I urge folks to take our dogs and show, it's a good opportunity to get ready for the May Trials and a great place to start your green dogs. If we want to have more chances to show our dogs, we need to patronize these events. More info can be found elsewhere in this newsletter. Page 6 Scents & Nonscents

8 Brags, Brags and More Brags Any venue, any breed Barb Peterson and Peggy Chandler, Agility Directors can be reached at SDOCNM.org Or Or Dee Falk is happy to report that she finally found another Doberman. She is a rescue female about 11 months old from Doberman Rescue. She is already showing signs of being a very nice working dog. Her name is No Limits Odessa's Seaport Odyssey. "Dessa" for short. At the December Sangre de Cristo KC agility trials, Peggy Chandler and her Sheltie, Jake, earned their Master Jumpers with Weaves Preferred title. YAY! Barb Mitchell s Golden Retriever Fag'n completed his Novice Fast, with a 2nd place, and his Open Jumpers with a 1st at the Weimaraner Club's trials at the Fairgrounds last month. Congratulations to both of you! Jane Winkler s spotted ones also had a great weekend at the Weimaraner Club trials! Chukke had three double-qs, Spinner finished his Excellent FAST title, while Linus finished his NFP and earned two legs towards his Excellent Jumpers Preferred title. Awesome job!! Showing she s still got what it takes at the Weimaraner Club trials, Clint Wolf s Golden Girl Kaia went 6 for 6 in 16 preferred, picking up 2 more triple Q s. Baby Skyler, meanwhile, took a 1st place in the 20 Excellent Standard class to finish her AX title, then another 1st place in Open Jumpers to finish that title. She picked up her first Excellent FAST leg, and her first Masters Standard leg which began the accumulation of points toward her MACH. Lisa Frankland s Papillon, Blast, earned his RN at the rally and obedience trials in Las Cruces last month. At the WCA agility trials the following weekend, he finished his Excellent Standard title with a first place, and earned his very first MACH points by qualifying twice in Master JWW, both also with first places. He would now like to be addressed as Master Blaster! 9 Tracking Test Report I was chairman for the SDOC TD on January 11th, but didn't get to watch either of the TD tracks as I was laying a TDX track at the time. I can say that there was slight moisture in the air and that was great for the dogs. I understand that the German Shepherd (from Colorado) did his track in about 11 minutes, very well. The other dog, Chase (Gloria Napper-Owen s Terv), was super and had one corner where he looked to be sure it was right and then went right down the track. The fun match was set up by Rich Cummings. He was chief tracklayer for the test and arranged for 6 TDX tracks to be put in as well as a certifying track. Each judge plotted and then ran 3 TDX tracks. It was great to have the practice with a judge-laid track, plotted just like a real test. We did not have formal cross track layers, but the rest of the track was regulation. It was a great experience for all of us. Big thank you to both Norma Rust and Jeanne Ramirez for judging the test and then helping us with the TDX. Jeanne mentioned that we have some very talented dogs here and she was amazed that they can track so well with the dryness we have here. Both judges were a delight to work with. Rosemary Burtch was test secretary. Lynn Wilson - invaluable help with the judges and helping them by describing the lay of the land there to make their plotting easier. Rich Cummings was chief track layer. Marcie Jensen hosted Norma Rust. Gloria Napper-Owen and new TD Chase, with judges Jeanne Ramirez and Norma Rust The track layers included Rich Cummings, Rosemary Burtch, Doranna Durgin, Annie Newsted, Bob Owen (TDX), Jo Ashburn, and Tom Redmon. We had three lovely ladies from Amarillo, Gayla, Kathy, and Elisha who came over just to see how tracking is done. They were stake bearers for all the tracks and they walked behind as gallery on 2 of the TDX tracks. They were a huge help. Talya Bowland was also a stake bearer. Nancy O'Neal was a driver. SDOC Board Meetings are held on the Tuesday prior to General Membership meetings at the SDOC Training Building. Minutes are available for review by contacting the Recording Secretary at kknaughton@g mail.com or at any General Membership meeting. Want to become a member? Get an application in the lobby at the Club building, or download from -Annie Newsted, 2015 TD test chairman the SDOC web site! The fun match brought in a little more money to help defray the cost of the TD. It was amazing to see how well the tracking community here in Albuquerque came together to put this on. Page 9
