1 Scents & Nonscents Nov/Dec, 2016 Teaching People and their Dogs for over 50 years. Inside this issue: Merry Xmas to Hounds 2 News Notes 3 Holiday Stuff 4 Novice/Open Agility Trial Prez Sez Sept. Minutes Membership Renewal Brags Banquet Form Title/Degree Cards Meeting Schedules Oh Christmas Tree, UHOH! SDOC members homes usually have at least one dog and sometimes a cat or two. We also like to have Christmas trees and other Holiday decorations. Here are a few things to remember when doing your decorating for the Season. That TREE! Christmas trees come with a builtin attraction for pets, especially young ones. There are several ways to lessen dangers for our beloved pets who are fascinated by that sudden appearance of the outdoors indoors. For one thing, you want to make the tree much less accessible to your pets. When dealing with dogs, it s often easier to put a set of baby gates around it or even set up an ex-pen for it. A four foot ex-pen may even serve to keep many cats out and blocked from scaling that tree. They really don t make the best decorations at the top of the tree. Some friends of mine used to use an eye-bolt and fasten the tree to the ceiling to prevent its upset. If your tree is in the corner, that eye-bolt can even be used to hang some other decoration the rest of the year. If you have older, more staid dogs, and you don t want piddles on the lower branches, you may want to hang noisy ornaments on the tips of the lower branches to act as early warning systems. That worked for me for years. Nonbreakable bells and noisy decorations were enough to let me know when Rover was getting too close or the pup was getting curious. Strings of lights are charming, but remember that if you have a chewer, they could get a bad burn if they destroy a string while it is plugged in. I actually use a fiber-optic tree now which is far less attractive to my hounds. Another option is to have a multiple extension such as is used for tv/computer set-ups and can be turned off by a switch. If you can hook it into a plug that is hooked to a wall switch, that is even better. Watch out for those flour/salt/water ornaments that many kids bring home as school projects. They can be deadly to dogs who ingest them. If you want to hang these, be sure to put them securely at a high level on the tree. The same goes for breakable ornaments. Safe ornaments should be the only ones used down low. Fertilizers and bacteria can build up in the water used to keep the tree fresh. Make sure your pet can t reach it by either covering it with the tree skirt, or even better, blocking of the tree as mentioned earlier. Pets may also ingest pine needles which is not necessarily a danger except if done very often. Be sure to keep pine needles vacuumed up. Also be sure to vacuum thoroughly if an ornament is broken. Opting for an artificial tree is an even better idea, and many of them are very realistic these days. Some fake pine scent can still give you the feeling of a real tree. Other things to watch out for during the season are candles, plant bulbs, and mistletoe which can be dangerous if ingested. Keep the fancy plants out of reach, and watch out for the cookie dough when you are baking. Dogs like it raw or cooked because of the sweetness, and an upset tummy is just as apt to happen in your pet as in the children. Wrapping packages for the pets is fun, but make sure they don t eat the foil along with the treat. And look out for tinsel as well. It can easily obstruct a dog s bowel. Be sure toys are safe for play, and limit the time with those oversized bully sticks and chew bones. Dogs don t process rawhide as well as we d like to think, and cleaning up the floor in the middle of celebrations is not my idea of fun. Otherwise, HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!!!!!!!!!! Page 1
