1 Scents & Nonscents February, 2010 Teaching People and their Dogs for over 50 years. Inside this issue: Obedience Classes 2 Helen Yarwood 3 Agility Classes 5 Good Sportsmanship 6 Super Q Mike Kuliasha Award 7 8 Minutes 9& 10 Upcoming Meeting Schedules 12 MIXED BREEDS, YES OR NO? At our February 26 meeting, the membership will be discussing whether or not to include Mixed Breed dogs in our fall obedience and agility trials. Be sure to come to the meeting so that you can be heard regarding this important decision. While mixed breeds will now be eligible to enter trials, it is up to the individual clubs to decided if they wish to allow them to compete. The reason that this is so important is that the AKC has made three changes to their AKC Canine Partners program for mixed breed dogs which could have an effect on our trials. Our Board discussed these changes and the possibility of including MB dogs in our trials. Their decision was to bring this to the membership for feedback before voting on it at the March board meeting. The changes which the AKC has made are: 1. The restrictions for stand-alone events were removed. As of April 1, 2010, any club holding all-breed Companion Events has the option of opening its Obedience, Rally and/or Agility trials up to mixedbreed competition. 2. The restriction to hold separate classes for mixed-breed dogs has been removed. If a club opts to allow mixed-breed dogs into its event, they will compete in the same classes for the same titles and awards as the purebred entrants. Competition will be head to head. 3. The restriction for separate awards and titles was removed. Mixed-breed dogs will compete for the same titles and awards as purebred dogs. This means that a mixed-breed dog can take High In Trial over a purebred dog, can get exactly the same CD, CDX and UD, etc. titles, and can earn placings in any and all classes in which they are entered. In other words, if a M-B dog beats your BC or Sheltie or whatever breed, it s tough patooties folks. As I personally see it, we will simply be challenged to show the falsehood of that old wives tale that M-B dogs are smarter, healthier, etc. than purebreds. My feeling is that we need to train well enough to prove them wrong. Remember, this will be your chance to air your views so be sure to come and do so!!! The Ed. TD Test Successful Rosemary Burtch and her German Shepherd, Ty made it to the last turn before flunking earned their TD at our January Tracking Test.; however, two dogs did pass. There was a total entry of 5. Adajane Knoll of Evergreen, Co. and her Labrador, Sorol s Book of Secrets earned their TD as did Nicole Higgins and 4UI d Steal the Stars, a Malinois. They are from Vernon, UT. The judge for the day was Sharon Jolly. As usual, the food was delicious, and a fun time was had by all. Estelle Metz and her Corgi also made a very good showing. 3 News Notes from the Neighborhood Your Editor Your Editor humbly apologizes for all the errors in the January issue of S&N. You will find the November 2009 minutes in this issue. The proper Officers and Board members will be found on p. 8 of this issue. The dogs pictured on the front page of the newsletter last month are Sherry and Caeli who are much loved by Barbara Mitchell. If you found any other major errors, please let Clint Wolf know so he can correct them on the website. I was using an old S&N form instead of one of the new ones and simply forgot to change some things. This issue should be back on track! The show and obedience trial season is starting up so be sure to send your brags and trial results to be published in S&N. Reports from folks who observed one of our members doing well are also invited. We extend congratulations to all the Club members who earned titles in A list of names is on page 5. I wish there had been room to include ALL the titles each dog has earned, but with space limited this month, only the current titles were listed. Some of these dogs have done especially well, but all deserve a BIG CONGRATULA- TIONS!!! SDOC WEBSITE ADDRESS IS Be Sure to Check the Website for complete class information, class applications and special updates. We also congratulate our special award winners, Karen Paone (Mike Kuliasha Award), Nancy Pollock (Helen Yarwood Award), and Rosemary Burtch (Good Sportsmanship Award). Helen Yarwood Award For 2009 The Helen Yarwood Award is given in honor of Ms. Yarwood. While I never had the pleasure of knowing Helen Yarwood, but I know that she was very committed to SDOC s training program. She worked many, many hours each year instructing our students. SDOC chose to honor her dedication and hard work with this award, to be given annually to the member of our training staff that has donated the most hours to instructing SDOC classes. This year s honoree has given of herself year after year for the benefit of SDOC. She has taught innumerable classes over the years and helped out with the Friday night Run-Throughs again & again. Those of us who have benefitted from her instruction and encouragement are too numerous to mention. Again this year she has continued her work for the club, amassing over 100 instructional hours. It is my honor and great pleasure to announce this year s Helen Yarwood honoree: Nancy Pollock! Training Year (per the SDOC Training Regulations) For these purposes, the training year will be from December 1 to November 30 of the following year. The total hours of any class which begins on or before December 1 will be credited to the following training year. February, 2010 Page 3

6 SDOC Sportsmanship Award Presented By Leslie Swisher To order SDOC t-shirts and sweatshirts, contact Estelle Metz Stay warm or be cool, in style! As is tradition, the recipient from the pervious year consulted with recipients from other years to select the SDOC member who best represented the definition of Sportsmanship during the past year, Recent tradition also dictates the selection process begins with looking up a definition of sportsmanship to help guide the selection process. Of course I went to the universal source for all current knowledge, Wikipedia, for a definition of sportsmanship. The definition I found reads: Sportsmanship, conforming to all the rules of the game and acting in a fair manner towards the opponent. Well, this definition has some problems. The definition refers to opponents which is not a term most of us dog people use in referring to other dog people. Another problem for the selection process here is that it does not lead us to a single person. This Club is full of people who meet this definition. Since Wikipedia could not provide a suitable definition for the purpose at hand, I decided I would make up my own. I decided to add to the basic definition from Wikipedia a few more aspects. First the recipient had to be actively participating in a variety of dog activities. And second, they should be someone that has helped improve the experience of dog sports for others. I thought these additional criteria would help narrow the field, but there are many in the Club who meet this criteria as well. But now a single recipient must be identified as difficult as it might seem. In mulling over some individuals, one seemed to meet the criteria very well. This person participates in obedience, rally, agility and tracking. This person has worked events in all these areas. They teach agility and obedience classes for the Club. In fact, I know this person has been teaching classes and working events before I became a member of the Club. Since I have known this person, I have noticed they were particularly skilled at giving both support and productive feedback to others regarding training and performance. I think that people in the sport have greatly benefited from this person s contributions in all of these areas. With that description, I present the SDOC Sportsman of the Year Aware to Rosemary Burtch! Left: Rosemary Burtch receives Good Sportsmanship Award from Leslie Swisher. 7 Super Q! Hannah Agee, Agility Training Director Our Agility schedule has been out for some time and the classes are well attended -- especially our indoor classes. But even with the recent cold weather, our hardy and enthusiastic students in the outdoor classes have been staying warm with lots of fun agility work. The dogs think the winter weather's just fine! The Jump-building 101 class was a blast! It was a team effort of measuring, cutting, drilling, and assembling PVC tubing into a really great jump design -- and a good time was had by all. We built about 20 of these new jumps for the class attendees, and to improve the SDOC indoor equipment inventory. We will repeat this workshop in the spring, so if you want some stylish, functional, yet low-cost, agility jumps for your backyard training, be sure to attend. Our next agility training schedule will be out in 2 3 weeks. Happy Hurdling! 9 Mike Kuliasha Award For 2009 Given The history of this award goes back to the early days of the Club. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, there was a very special club member, Jim Murphy. Jim embodied the attitude and performance of being a wonderful club member and volunteer. He performed not only jobs that had a title but also the various jobs that just needed doing, often without fan fare or recognition. In 1963, Jim died on the day that the annual awards dinner was to be held. It was traditionally held in December and was a Christmas party and awards dinner. Some suggested that the dinner be cancelled, but those who knew Jim said that he would never let a job not be complete on time. The dinner went on. The next year it was decided to establish an award in his name to recognize a member who gives extra effort to the club. There is no set criteria. The winner may be a board member or not; a trainer, or not. The individual must simply carry on the high standard of service that Jim Murphy exemplified. In 1994, it was decided to re-name the award after Mike Kuliasha, as more of the members could relate to a person that they had all known. Mike had previously won the award in 1979 and was a person who gave his all to the Club. I remember Mike with his Dobe Hans in class. Quite a pair. When you review the names on the award, you will see individuals who did, and in a lot of cases, are still giving back to the club and dog community as a whole. From the first winner, Judy Carr, who still is running agility, doing obedience, and is a tracking judge; to the latest winners, many of whom you can see around this room. They are the ones who work for the betterment of the club above all. The people in this Club who volunteer are many. They are the phone committees, our first introduction to the public, the registrars, the instructors in obedience, rally, agility and tracking. They are the stewards at the shows, the ring crew at an agility trial, the tracklayers at the tracking tests. They are the show and match committees. They are the obedience and agility directors. They provide and set up the great food at the meetings. They are the ones who pick up a stray bit of trash in front of the building, pull a few weeds in the spring. They are the officers and board members. They are the ones who do the many tasks required to keep the club moving forward. I thank each and every one of you for what you have done and what you will do this year. The club could not exist without your service. I saw a sign at the zoo in the building where the volunteers work. It says, We don t pay our volunteers because they are worthless, but because they are priceless. Each of our volunteers is equally priceless. This is the 45th year of recognition of special people in the club. These 45 individuals represent thousands of hours of devotion to this club. Each one of them has made contributions to move the club forward to where we are today. As you read the names on the award, some names you might recognize as still very active in the club, such as Nancy Pollock, Pam Sehmer. Others have done the work and gone on to meet their four-legged friends at the Rainbow Bridge. We honor each and every one of them. The individual selected this year has worked on the Board, is a super rally instructor, and has helped move the club forward even in the face of some very difficult personal health challenges. With all of this, she is a great asset to the club. She works for the improvement of the club, selflessly. We proudly recognize this year s winner, Karen Paone! SDOC Board Meetings are held on the Tuesday prior to General Membership meetings at the SDOC Training Building. Minutes are available for review by contacting the Recording Secretary at earthling. net or at any General Membership meeting. Want to become a member?
