1 Scents & Nonscents October, 2016 What Is It About Dogs Teaching People and their Dogs for over 50 years. Nominations 2 News Notes 3 Double Q 4 Photos of Recent Events Prez Sez More Pix Brags Sept. Minutes Agility Equip Auction Minutes, Cont. Meeting Schedules Back Cover We all know we love them. That s a given. But why? They are long, short, hairy or smooth, spotted, tri-colored, plain, elegant, quiet, noisy, aloof, or cuddly. They bark, howl, whine, or cry. Slurp, snore, lick and lap. They can be the best guard dogs in the world, the best scenters, the finest hunters, the biggest buddies or the smallest snugglers. Does that have anything to do with our reaction to them? What about their cold noses, floppy ears, stubby tails and huge paws? How do any of these characteristics affect our reactions to them? What defines their characters or beings? If it isn t any of these things, what is it? Is it their loyalty, their good natures? Is it something more? Sometimes they are also snappy or illtempered. They get underfoot and make messes. They are annoying and smelly or dirty and shaggy. Yet we forgive them all these things. We clean up after them, wash their muddy paws, dry them when they come in soaked from the rain. We scold them and sigh over their mistakes. And we forgive them over time. Much of all of this is the result of taking them into our families. Dogs used to know their place which was out on a chain or in a pen or just running loose on the farm or in the streets. Somehow, along the way to modern life, that changed. That is no longer acceptable so we take them into our homes, and guess what. We learn to love them, to forgive their mistakes and failings, to hold them when either they or we are afraid. We learn to care for them when they are sick or injured and not just ignore them or kick them aside. It s a cultural thing. We change them, and they change us. And slowly we learn to treat them and other animals more kindly as well. Then, if we are good stewards of these, our animal friends, we begin to change other people, to help them become more kindly and loving toward animals. Love, that is the word. We love our dogs because they ARE. In a sense, they are an extension of our selves, and we want to love ourselves so we learn to love our dogs. Then, if we are smart and lucky, we learn to love others, and our world, and everything that is in our world. And we teach them to love their creatures. Which brings us back to dogs. We love our dogs because they love us, and they ARE love. It was put into us to love. Can we love our dogs enough to love all other people? Do they? Think about it. LD Page 1

3 Newsnotes From the Neighborhood Your Editor Don t forget to continue to bring toys to be given to the dogs at Animal Control. Clean, gently used toys are needed. This is an ongoing need so they can be given at any time. Maybe we should put a little tag on them that would indicate they were a gift of SDOC. Nice touch?? Barb Peterson wants to give a special tip of the hat to the many folks who both did well and worked hard at the Sept. SDOC Agility trials. Susan Neal not only Chaired this big meet but also earned a MACH. Lori Sage and Jeff Teare judged fantastic, fair and never give-away courses with great good humor. Linda Smith did an outstanding job on setting up a smooth running order...never an easy job! The Lobos from UNM who did whatever was needed whenever needed. And, of course, the whole gang of folks who kept the whole shebang running, course builders, stewards, and others who kept the whole trial running smoothly all weekend. Southwest Nosework s founder, Ron Gaunt, will be giving a seminar in Santa Fe on Oct. 28/29 at the Lucky Dawg Daycare Center. It is sponsored by K-9 Scentral Southwest. Ron has over 40 years experience in scenting dog training and if a few hours with him doesn t improve your skills and teach you to trust your dog, you are probably in trouble not your dog, you. <GGG> The cost is $150 for a working spot and $75 for an audit spot, and if you don t have one reserved yet, you better hurry! Register at quick! SDOC WEBSITE ADDRESS IS Be Sure to Check the Website for complete class information, class applications and special updates. Annie Newsted needs two people to help with the Tracking Test Committee for the TDX to be held February 5, You will need to attend the trial and be there in case of a (VERY RARE) case where a committee would be called. You ll get an excellent lunch and a chance to watch some excellent SDOC folks show off their tracking abilities in Placitas! If you haven t yet read the article which Rosemary Burtch posted to the Club s yahoogroups list, do so. It is an interesting introduction to the dog s world of small and our part in it. It s a different take on our entire world. We have a couple late arriving brags which didn t fit into the Brags section of this newsletter so...here we go: Cricket Mara s Smooch Whippet took 2 more points at the Sept 24th lure course in Peyton, Colo. Pam Sehmer and Chinese Crested, Gilda, finished their CD. Estelle Metz and Corgi Rheese earned their Rally Novice title in Amarillo. Richard Irland and Golden, Louie, finished their Rally Advanced title recently. Kim Banales and her 8 month old Viszla went BOB at a recent show. There are quite a few more brags on the last page of the SDOC minutes to be found in this newsletter. Training Year (per the SDOC Training Regulations) For these purposes, the training year will be from December 1 to November 30 of the following year. The total hours of any class which begins on or before December 1 will be credited to the following training year. Denise Soon s new Corgi pup from Ch Keeper/HCH3 Rocky in center. Page 3

4 DOU- BLE To register for any Agility class, contact: Stephani Kouretsos at: Com or Q September is a month with two agility trials at the Bernalillo County Sheriff s Posse. The SWAT trial was held last weekend, September 9, 10, 11. On September 23, 24, and 25, SDOC will hold its Fall trial. We are lucky to have these two local events. It takes a village to hold an agility trial. Dates are scheduled months (years?) in advance. Judges must be hired and the logistics for their stay and transport must be arranged. Ribbons and awards must be ordered and constructed. Food and beverages must be purchased and brought to the site. Heavy equipment must be unloaded/reloaded and moved around many times. Every day of the trial the dirt must be attended to. On the actual show dates many workers are needed to keep things running smoothly. This Fall our two shows are benefitted by the help of Susan McGowen s UNM students who move equipment (including reloading), run leashes, set bars, and jump in to do whatever is needed. With two rings running simultaneously specialized positions are managed by ring stewards. Due to the help of the UNM students, only three positions need be filled: gate steward, timer and scribe. Ring stewards are dropping like flies because it is a struggle for them to find people willing to work!! It seems that this problem is not unique to our trials. It may be a bit tongue-in-cheek but there is some truth in Laura Hartwick s article in September s issue of Clean Run Magazine. REMINDER: Drills cost $10 per dog per session. To register for any Obedience class, contact: Betty Pearson At Not everybody works at trials, it s just another chapter in the history of class struggle. Some people are too old/young/tired/crabby/new/smart/shy/busy/punkrock/not punkrock enough to work, or their dogs are too old/young/tired/crabby/new/smart/shy/busy/punkrock/not punkrock enough for their people to work. To diffuse future strife between workers and non-workers Hartwick proposes using the zodiac signs to match temperaments with trial positions. Agility workers of the world, unite. No matter your sign there s something you can do, even if for just 15 minutes. It s a fun article, find it, read it, and discover what your astrological sign does best--then sign up to work! Our sport is supported by volunteerism: from teaching positions at SDOC to building courses and setting bars during class. We all have precious dogs, ring conflicts, and other things to cake care of. Please, VOL- UNTEER so our sport can continue. At the SWAT trial, despite the need to memorize and run their own dogs during a chaotic schedule, a group of dedicated volunteers stepped up. Thank you!! And, although the courses were challenging, a loose pitbull roamed the grounds, water flooded the RV area, no food vender arrived, and there were numerous ring conflicts, a record number of teams earned their MACH or PACH titles. Congratulations to Richard Hansen and Sam, Phyllis Collier and KC, Susan McGowen and Sonic, Linda Kipp and Picassa, Chris Sanks and Nitro, and two teams from out of town. Next up: SDOC Fall Agility Trial. Step up, learn to scribe, time, or man/woman the gate. It s a win/win for all. Susan Neal Page 4 Scents & Nonscents

6 Prez Sez By Jeff Robb To order SDOC t-shirts and sweatshirts, contact Estelle Metz Stay warm or be cool, in style! Our Fall Agility and Obedience trials are finished. Congratulations to all who showed their dogs. Hopefully many of you earned legs toward titles. I want to thank all of those who helped with these trials. Whether you stewarded, did hospitality, helped set up or take down, please know that your contributions are appreciated. Special thanks to Sherry Rogers who did an excellent job as our Fall Labor Day Obedience Trial Chair, and to Susan Neal for Chairing our Fall Agility Trial. Also, a shout out to those hard working folks who showed up on that Friday afternoon to help set up for the Obedience Trial Maggie Gee, John Clendenin Donna Sloan. Allie Wimber and others along with 3 of Susan McGowan's UNM students. Several more club members showed up to help set gates. Many thanks also to all the folks who helped with setting up and taking down the Agility Trial. Special thanks to those folks who stuck around and helped load the truck after the Obedience/Rally Trial on Monday and then came back to the club and put it all away. As always, it takes a small army to put on these events. One of our hot water heaters died last month and we are in the process of getting it and the other one (same age) replaced. John Clendenin is in charge of this project Thank you John! We have a new surface on the Agility field. The field had lost much of the sand due to erosion and settling so that it had become a safety concern. Thank you to Barbara Peterson for overseeing this project! Time to start thinking about our awards banquet. Planning is underway to have it at the Tanoan Country Club again. It will be the first Saturday after New Years a luncheon. Be sure to get your title cards filled out and to Maggie Gee (who gets the bars and plaques ordered many thanks Maggie!) The Nominating Committee has put together a slate of nominees for next year's officers and Board members please see the list elsewhere in this newsletter. At this month's (October) meeting, nominations will also be accepted from the floor. The Election will be at the November meeting. Remember, this month's meeting is our annual Halloween Party. Dog costume contest and games, lots of fun! My wife Cathy has volunteered to be in charge of Hospitality, so if you have a Fall/Halloween favorite food/goodies you can bring, please let her know.
