1 Scents & Nonscents July, 2012 Teaching People and their Dogs for over 50 years. Inside this issue: SDOC Classes 2 News Notes 3 Heeling Along 4 Double Q 5 General Meeting Minutes Match Help Needed Brags Club Officers & VIPs Call for Stewards Meeting Schedules Back Cover The Dog Days of Summer When I used to do breeder referral and rescue for my national breed club, I found that there were three periods during the year when I would see a definite uptick in inquiries from people looking to either purchase or adopt a dog: Christmas, Westminster week, and Springtime. I quickly learned to dread the calls during those first two periods, as these tended to be impulse buyers. The December callers typically were looking to surprise their kids/elderly parent/significant other with a puppy that the recipient may or may not really want. And the Westminster callers already thought they knew everything they needed to know about the dog on TV from the brief announcer s blurb, which in one particularly bad year included a long-time breeder-judge s comment about the breed being the perfect dog for everyone. Fortunately for both my sanity and my faith in mankind, the calls I started getting in March and April tended to be much different. Most of these callers had done their homework and put a lot of thought into bringing a new dog into their home. Again and again, these people would tell me, We hope to bring one home at the beginning of the summer, when the kids are off from school and we have vacation time, so we can spend extra time bonding with and training him. Wow! Those are the type of people that any responsible breeder would be thrilled to place a puppy with. Summer is a wonderful season for dogs and their owners. Longer days, holidays, and vacations translate to more time we can spend playing with, training, competing with, or just relaxing with our four-legged friends. The warmer weather makes housebreaking a new puppy that much easier. And of course, there are so many shows, matches, and seminars for us to choose from! The registration deadline for the Renate Van Allen seminar July 28th and 29th has already passed, but contact Maggie Gee at with any questions or to inquire about cancellations. SDOC is also hosting a Variable Surface Tracking workshop August 11th and 12th, and the registration form is on the Forms and Premiums section of our website. The August matches are the perfect way to get ready for the local trials in September. SDOC is putting on an agility match at the Bernalillo Country Sheriff s Posse Arena on August 25th, followed by an obedience and rally match and conformation show n go, also at the BCSP, on August 26th. And our friends at the CNMGSDC will be hosting a breed/obedience/rally match at Hoffman Park on August 5th. Don t forget our obedience and rally trials at the BCSP September 2nd and 3rd. These Labor Day trials always draw large entries, and are a lot of fun for entrants, volunteers, and spectators alike. The following weekend the agility folks take over the Sheriff Posse s Arena for the Weimaraner Club s agility trials September 7th-9th, then SDOC is back to mark the official end of summer with our own weekend of agility trials September 21st-23rd. The Zia Australian Shepherd Club is also hosting ASCA trials August 25th and 26th, and the Albuquerque Whippet Fanciers Association is offering coursing ability tests open to all breeds September 22nd and 23rd. Look in our newsletters, our website and its links, and our YahooGroups e-list for more information about these and other upcoming events. And make the most of those dog days of summer! Page 1

3 Newsnotes From the Neighborhood Laurel Drew has a ghostwriter this month, and for August as well. I ve agreed to do the newsletter while Laurel recovers from eye surgery and then travels to Lompoc, CA for the big sighthound specialties. Turns out it s a very small world, as my husband was stationed at Vandenberg AFB, just outside of Lompoc, from , and I served as the head obedience steward at those same specialties for 3 or 4 years running, where I first met Laurel. During the time I lived there I also trained with Dorothy McCauley, SDOC s late AKC delegate; showed to Nancy Pollack when she judged at Lompoc Valley KC (which Nancy sardonically termed heart attack central ) Your (Substitute) Editor My all time favorite show picture: Yours truly with Lav (Casey s Lavish Mischief UDX NA) and judge Pam Weaver at Ventura County (CA) DFA in July of 1993 during a record-breaking hot July weekend; and met Evi Fox when we both attended the 1997 AKC Obedience Invitational. Here s a picture of me and my first Kerry Blue Terrier, Lav, from way back then. Who would have guessed that I already had so many connections with Albuquerque when we moved here in 2003! The recent 4th of July holiday has me thinking about the problem of dogs escaping from their homes or yards. These dogs chances of being returned safely to their owners very often depends less on whether they have a collar and tags with current contact information, or a microchip, and more on whether or not they will trust a stranger enough to be caught. A year or so ago, my daughter and I were driving down Eubank and watched in horror as a well-meaning woman pursued a small dog into traffic where he was run over and killed. While I don t know anything about this dog or the events leading up to what we witnessed, I can t help but believe that it would have ended very differently if he had been socialized enough to approach a friendly stranger instead of running away in a blind panic. Something to think about with our own little fuzz-butts and the dogs we see in training classes as well. Training a dog isn t just about titles. A trained dog is a happy dog...and a loved dog. In so many ways, proper training and socialization not only vastly improves the quality of a dog s life, but can literally save it. Don t forget that this month s SDOC meeting on July 27th is our annual ice cream social. Join everyone to beat the heat with some yummy ice cream...and hot fudge, and whipped cream. Finally, one more reminder to look for information about upcoming events, in this newsletter and elsewhere. Please consider offering to help at one or more of these events. I don t have any experience is not an excuse no job is too small, and other volunteers will be there to train and help you. The benefits are fantastic: make friends, get an insider s perspective, meet judges and top trainers/dogs, help support your club and your sport, and very often FREE LUNCH for workers. Without U, it s not a CLUB! -Lisa Frankland SDOC WEBSITE ADDRESS IS Be Sure to Check the Website for complete class information, class applications and special updates. Training Year (per the SDOC Training Regulations) For these purposes, the training year will be from December 1 to November 30 of the following year. The total hours of any class which begins on or before December 1 will be credited to the following training year. July, 2012 Page 3

4 Heeling Along By John Clendenin, OTD To register for any Agility class, contact: Bill Chambers gmail.com Or REMINDER: Drills cost $7 per dog per session. To register for any Obedience class, contact: Betty Pearson At MUCH ADO ABOUT SOMETHING We're about to head into another busy part of the year. SDOC's fun match will be Aug. 26th at the Sheriff's Posse Arena on north 2nd Street (about as far north as you can go before falling off the edge of our flat earth or hitting Tramway Blvd., whichever comes first). Then the really big shows arrive right on its heels, the Fall Obedience Trials Sunday and Monday of Labor Day weekend. Do we need stewards? Do we EVER need stewards! If you're not busy on those back-to -back weekends--please, GET BUSY and volunteer. RALLY ROUND OF APPLAUSE Congratulations to two on our Rally training staff: Richard Irland, newly approved Instructor, and Jeanne Gill, our newest Assistant. They add mighty deep depth to SDOC's Rally program! RALLY RETURNS Speaking of Rally, training returns with a course Aug. 23 with a Thursday, 6:15 class. See the Classes page on the SDOC web site, CONFORMATION RETURNS Kim and Marco Banales return this summer with two Conformation classes: Intro and Intermediate Showmanship. Both will meet Saturday afternoons starting Aug. 4. See the Classes page on the SDOC web site, MASSIVE UNDERTAKING Thanks again and again to Janice Anthes for mounting the Beginning Open and Beginning Utility classes this spring and summer. This was a massive undertaking and took the combined talents of an all-star team of assistants that included AKC Judge David Ray, Terri Brown and Vi Bauhs. The classes alternated, spanning 16 weeks. Janice did much of this while conducting her morning Novice Drill, which resumes soon (watch your SDOC Yahoo group or check the Classes listing on the web site). It was the first time in a long time that we've seen introductory classes at the advanced levels. They assure a solid entry in Open and Utility in the very near future, given that both were well-attended by an enthusiastic bunch of handlers who know a golden opportunity when they see one. Here's hoping for more of this advanced fun next year! Page 4 Scents & Nonscents

5 Double Q By Gene Tatum Our next agility show season will be starting soon. There will be three trials starting in August and ending in October. First the Fun Match, August 25 th at the Bernalillo County Sheriff s Posse Arena (BCSPA). Phyllis Collier is the organizer. This is good event for those handlers/ dogs which are considering competing or just want to have fun. Second, the AKC 3-day, September 21-23, also at the BCSPA and is open to Mixed Breeds with FAST offered on Friday-Saturday, and Time 2 Beat on Sunday. Also note, the Saturday Special Attraction: Victory Lap for our Retired Agility Dogs. Susan Neal is the Trial Chair. Finishing with the AKC 2- day, Novice/Open match October 20 & 21 conducted at the SDOC facility. Note the building, parking lot and field will be reserved for this trial starting at noon Friday, October 19 th till and all day Sunday. This is a titling trial, but is intended for those dog/handler teams to gain experience, develop confidence and have most importantly have fun. Hannah Agee is the organizer. I would like to provide a progress report on the status of the SDOC Agility Program. As you are aware this is an all volunteer program. So first, I would like to thank the Registrars, Instructors, Assistants and Apprentices who have made the program a success up to this point and have made my job easier. We are still working on providing a consistent, progressive trailing schedule for dog/handler teams from puppy through intermediate classes. We could use one or two more instructors for puppy classes. If you are interested please contact me. We are making progress with developing Instructors for the Beginning through Intermediate classes. We have just offered an Advanced Class. For the convenience of the students and our instructor, our Master Handlers class is now conducted as a punch card skills class. We also offer Skills Class which focuses on advanced handling skills. Competitive and Intermediate Drill Classes are offered to practice those skills needed to be successful at agility trials. Information regarding classes can be found at the SDOC website, or contact me at AgilityDirector@SDOCNM.org. 7 Board Actions The Board approved a UHaul truck rental for moving obedience/rally equipment for the Fun Match and 2 day Labor Day weekend trial. The rental will be for 10 days. The Board approved John Clendenin s recommendations for promotion of Richard Irland to a Head Rally Instructor and Jeanne Gallas to Assistant Rally Instructor. Congratulations! Announcements Laurel Drew asks that any additions to the Newsletter in July/August be sent to Lisa Frankland at lisaf42@comcast.net. Jeff Robb reminds us that it is not too early to be thinking of sponsoring trophies for the Fall Obedience Show. Maggie Gee reminds the membership that the next general meeting will be the ice cream social. Don t forget to sign up for the refreshment list. Donna Sloan (librarian for the club) asks that any suggestions for books for the library be forwarded to her. Also, any newer books or DVD s on training that can be contributed to our library would be appreciated. Donna Tucker asked about the cost of adding refrigerated air to the club. This had been researched in the past and we were quoted the cost to be about $25,000-$30,000. As this is prohibitive, standing fans were suggested as a solution for the very hot days. Readings Faye Mitchell, 1 st reading Ron Portillo, 1 st reading Michael Grady, 2 nd reading and voted acceptance by the membership. Congratulations! Thanks to the hospitality crew this month; Laurel Drew coordinated all. Next general membership meeting will be Friday, July 27 and will be the ice cream social. Meeting adjourned at 7:32 Submitted by Amy Hendrickson Has your dog accomplished something new? all the details to the Editor. Abby joins her sisters Blaze and Moxie to become the third member of their wonderfully talented 6/6/06 litter to earn a Utility title! Diane Davis is understandably proud of her Weimaraner, Lolly, (Kristen-Britannia's Recuerdo de Plata) who made her conformation debut at 6 and 1/2 months at the Weimaraner Club of Albuquerque's May Specialties. She won Winners Bitch, Best of Winners, and Best of Opposite for a 4 point major at the first specialty; Best in Sweeps in both sweepstakes, and Reserve Winners Bitch at the second specialty. She also picked up several more reserves over the weekend. In June, Pam Jones and her Golden Sandy earned their novice freestyle title with the Musical Dog Sport Association. Out of the 12 scores given for their three novice legs (4 scores are given for each leg), the judges gave this team 11 scores of 10 (highest score possible) and one score of 9. 9 (Brags, continued from p. 8) Penni Adrian s Cardigan Welsh Corgi Chase completed his Grand Championship on June 10th in Colorado Springs. One of his daughters, Ginger, completed her Championship on June 9th in Asheville NC. That completed the requirements for Chase's Register of Merit Bronze award. The ROM is the Cardigan Welsh Corgi Club of America's way of honoring its top producing dogs. SDOC Board Meetings are Penni also reports that her CWC Lowri (also a Chase daughter) earned a Group IV at Western Carolina Dog Fanciers Association on June 17th (BEST birthday present ever). On June 29th Chase daughter Nikki earned a Herding Group I at California Lost Coast Kennel Club. Daughter, Riley, finished her Championship on July 7th. CWC Holmes (Chase son) completed his RN at our National Specialty in May and his BN on July 8th in DeKalb IL. held on the Tuesday prior to General Membership At the UKC trial held July 1st, Barbara Mitchell s young Golden, Fagan, (Fly'n Paws Pick'n Santa's Pockets) placed first in the Novice B, out of a good-sized class! This was especially thrilling for her because he blew a Q the previous day by racing out of the ring on the long sit. Marcie Jensen s Doberman, Trinket (Ch. Soquel's Last Souvenir CDX TD CA), got three Q's for her Novice Agility title at the WCA trials, with two first places and one second place. Then she got a Jumper's title with a first place, so now she has two legs in Jumpers. At the UKC show she placed second one day and third the next. She adds, Those of you who don't play the UKC game are missing out. They put on a really nice show. Michele Lommasson s All-American, Luke, got his first UKC open obedience leg at the UKC trials. He was also High scoring AMBOR. meetings at the SDOC Training Building. Minutes are available for review by contacting the Recording Secretary at dobiedudes@m Call For Stewards By Dede Brownstein On September 2nd and 3rd, SDOC will be hosting our Labor Day Obedience and Rally Trials. In order to have a successful event, we will need several volunteers to serve as stewards. Why steward? Here are two important reasons. First, you will perform an indispensable service to SDOC. Second, you have an opportunity to benefit from a meaningful learning experience. The first reason is obvious because we cannot have a trial without stewards. The second is obvious to those who have stewarded in the past but perhaps not to people new to Obedience and Rally. You will have an opportunity to learn so much from your stewarding experience. You ll learn about ring procedures. You ll become more familiar with the intricacies of the exercises in the level at which you re stewarding. You ll have a chance to interact with judges, which can not only be really fun but will allow you to see that they re human beings with faults and failings like everyone else. Plus you can watch your fellow SDOC members go through their paces and silently cheer them on. You even get a free lunch! There are 3 stewards for each obedience ring and 5 for Rally, so take your pick and add your name to the Steward sign-up sheets at SDOC or call Dede at I cannot encourage you enough to take advantage of this opportunity. You ll be glad you did! sn.com or at any General Membership meeting. Want to become a member? Get an application in the lobby at the Club building, or download from the SDOC web site!
