1 Scents & Nonscents April, 2016 Teaching People and their Dogs for over 50 years. Inside this issue: Double Q continued 2 News Notes 3 Double Q 4 Workers for Spring Trials The Pres Sez March Minutes Brags Service Dog Article Stewarding, the Little Things... Meeting Schedules The Aging Athlete Is your best buddy slowing up and getting pudgy? Are you having trouble making time in Agility with him, or is he having trouble clearing the jumps in obedience? These are just two of the signs of aging in your athlete. Some other signs may be a bit of creakiness on arising, particularly in the morning and some lethargy when hanging out in the yard. Instead of chasing that new pup around the yard, he is just watching it. Or, if you toss his toy, he doesn t pursue it as he used to. A dog hits middle age and starts slowing up around age seven, but he doesn t necessarily need to give up everything. Unless you check with your vet and discover an actual physical ailment such as arthritis in shoulder or neck, or some hip dysplasia, it shouldn t be necessary to completely retire your dog. There are some alternatives. If your hound can t make time in regular classes in agility or clear the jumps in obedience, you may want to try the Preferred classes in AKC trials. Another possibility is trying a different sport. How about tracking? While it is still a sport that requires a sound dog, tracking does not have to be done at a fast pace and might be an alternative. There is also nosework for the dog that needs a slower paced sport. Instead of flyball, you might want to try barn hunt. Yes, these sports work better for some breeds than others, but nearly any dog can have success at them if you have the determination to work with them. Now, about that pudginess. You may need to switch your dog to a lighter diet and make sure he gets exercise, not the just turn him out in the yard kind, but the kind where you AND he get out there and walk or in summer hit the pool for some swimming. The Rio Grande is handy to many of us although it has become harder to access it in summer, and you need to make sure that he doesn t baptize it himself. The powers that be are getting pretty fussy about that. Potty him thoroughly before going wading. If you don t mind dog hair in the drains, your own or a friend s swimming pool is useful. As for the diet, there are quite a few packaged foods out there for older dogs and less active dogs. Check them out. Cut back on those treats or check out some of the newer veggie or reduced fat treats. There are lots for both dogs and people. Long (or even short) hikes on the mesa are always good, and they are good for both of you. This is where tracking can come in nicely as an alternative sport. Check it out! Now if YOU have the pudgy problem it is an excellent source of weight loss for all. Now, I have to put a small caveat here. If you, or your dog, have physical problems bad back, feet, knees, etc. It may be harder for you to get out and exercise. It s still an important activity though so do what you can. If you have to check with your doctor and see if you need oxygen. Remember, we live at about a mile high, and there is less oxygen up here than down on the flatlands in the eastern U.S. You might even discover that moving to the Mid- West and the prairie lands might make both of you able to participate in sports more easily. Of course there is always the possibility that you have hit the end of the line with training and competing, but you can still go to the trials and help out with various jobs like stewarding, timing, leash running, etc. The Club and all the activities need to people to help out. You d be surprised how much fun it can be. Don t retire, just change focus for you AND you dog! Page 1

To keep the equipment in good condition, the chute, panels for the panel jump and thebroad jump are moved into the equipment shed at the end of each day. The baby teeter is pulled to the side of the ring and left tilted or face down to protect it from theharsh NM sun. 4 To register for any Agility class, contact: Bill Chambers gmail.com Or REMINDER: Drills cost $10 per dog per session. To register for any Obedience class, contact: Betty Pearson At Page 4 SDOC s agility field is a very active place. Not only are many classes held there, instructors also use the field during non class times to train and exercise their dogs. A new agility course is built almost every week by a team of dedicated volunteers. (Additional volunteers are needed). This course is usually built on Sunday and stays set up until the next build. If someone is interested in practicing a particular course, a map may be submitted to the agility director to be passed on to the course builders. It is requested that courses submitted for consideration offer sufficient challenges for the Master s class. Instructors for less advanced classes can revise the course for their students. (Space on the field is also available for practicing shorter sequences.) A map of the current week s course is sent to the agility instructors. This allows them the opportunity to develop sequences for their teaching objectives. The instructors relocate obstacles and jumps appropriate for their class but, at the end of that class, return the the equipment to the positions indicated on the course maps so that the next instructor can implement their own training plan based on the weekly map. Maps of the current course set up are also located in the field box by the gate. As the field is used by multiple dogs for a full week, the sand becomes torn up - especially around the weave poles and tunnel entrances. In the interest of safe footing for the dogs, it is important that the sand be leveled to insure a surface that will not injure them. There are several rakes in the equipment shed to be used for this purpose. Pat Hester and Gene Tatum have been very involved in course building and teaching. Although they will soon be leaving for Idaho for the summer, Gene will continue to convert course maps into a format that can be used in SDOC s (a bit smaller than regulation) field and the weekly maps. (Hooray for technology and Thank You Gene!!). Another Thank You to Gene for building a new triple jump. 5 Obed/Rally/Conformation/other Promotions: Donna Falkner, head trainer basic novice. Lyn Melin, Stevie Gallegos promoted to assistant Nosework. Catherine Hyatt promoted to Nosework apprentice. Due to low turnout at Friday night run thru s the board approved only offering them before each trial (March April, July-Aug). Class(es) will be scheduled in that slot. Agility Spring Trial went well overall. Small turnout, but fun courses. We will have a permanent conflict with AKC Nationals being held in Tulsa every other year, Reno every 3-4 years. We are investigating other weeks in March and April at Sherriff s Posse or Expo. We are also looking at ways to run a more efficient, cost-effective trial including single judge vs. two judges. Thanks to Barbara for serving as trial Chair, Lobos who worked and all who volunteered. Two teams earned their MACH. Donna Johnson has been promoted to instructor. Membership Readings -2nd readings Kathy Roman, Ginger Brayman. Both were voted into membership. Terri Brown moved, Barbara Petersen seconded, motion carried. Welcome new members! Brags - There were several brags by the membership. Congratulations! Hospitality - Thank you to Peggy Chandler and all who contributed to hospitality. Announcements-next general meeting is scheduled for April 29, Meeting adjourned at 7:33 PM Workers Needed For May Trials By Jane Winkler Ring Stewards will also be needed for our May trials. It s never too late to start planning for this. If you have any interesting in helping with our trials or just learning more about judging, be sure to sign up. There will be a stewarding seminar on May 6 at And!! In case you aren t aware of it, we have practice run throughs every Friday night except meeting nights at the training site. These aren t training sessions although occasionally a retry on a particular exercise may be allowed. They are intended to get you used to ring procedure and to have a look at how your dog is shaping up before you dig out that entry money. Besides, there is generally a lot of visiting with your club friends and general fun. Entries are $10 per dog, and you can bring as many dogs as you are currently working if you want. Just remember to pitch in and help with the stewarding and sometimes judging duties. For those who want to get some extra practice stewarding, this is an ideal time to do it. Lastly, be sure to read the article on page for additional information on stewarding. It is very useful and a good introduction for both new members and those who may have forgotten a few things. 9 Service Dogs and the Public By Janice Anthes, Trainer We have all seen a lot of service dogs in restaurants and other public places where our dogs are not allowed to go. This often brings up questions. As a dog training club, we get customers with true service dogs and others with questions. Currently in my Thursday morning class I have 3 service dogs who attend regularly. I hope the information below is helpful. Janice Anthes. Introduction to Service Dogs Service dogs are specially trained to perform tasks for people with disabilities that they can't perform themselves. The Americans with Disabilities Act is a federal law that prevents discrimination against people with disabilities and their service animals in public and private places. Although the ADA doesn't require you to register your service dog, state laws may vary and have further regulations for your pooch. The Americans with Disabilities Act, ADA The ADA provides for many protections of you and your service dog, but does not require you to register or certify your dog as a service animal. This federal law states that you can bring your dog with you into any business, including restaurants, movie theaters, retail stores, hotels and taxicabs. These businesses cannot exclude you or treat you differently than other customers. Business owners may ask you: If your dog is a service animal required because of a disability. What tasks he is trained to perform for you. Business owners cannot: Ask you to describe the nature of your disability. Demand proof that your dog is a service animal. Ask for medical documentation of your disability. Village People Service Dog Team Support The Village People are a local group providing support and training for people with Service dogs. Village People Service Dog Team Support Group offers: Service Dog Consultation and Education (by Founder/Volunteer, Angel Rose) Service Dog Team Support Training Guide (free upon request) A Network of highly Qualified Independent Dog Trainers suited to work with the disabled and their Service Dogs. Referrals to trainers provided upon request. SDOC Board Meetings are held on the Tuesday prior to General Membership meetings at the SDOC Training Building.
