1 Scents & Nonscents August, 2016 Who Are We? [The following are a couple of responses to the questionnaire which was printed in the last two S&N issues. I d love to see more of these printed. It could become a regular little column if enough people are interested. -Ed.] from a dog pound when I lived in Idaho. I fell in love and have had greyhounds ever since. I trained Sheikh to the UD, the first greyhound to earn the title, and later trained another grey to a TD, also a first for the breed. Teaching People and their Dogs for over 50 years. Inside this issue: Swamp Coolers 2 News Notes 3 Double Q 4 Scent Work Troops 5 Prez Sez July Minutes Brags My Life Has Gone to the Dogs SDOC August Fun Match Information Meeting Schedules From Marcia Sullivan: I have had dogs since I was 18. Don t ask how old I am now. My first dog was, believe it or not, a Boxer, Major Hesscrest the Third. He lived with myself and a roommate in a New York apartment, and he learned to open the refrigerator door, his major claim to fame! My favorite breed is the Siberian Husky. They are smart, loyal, beautiful and have links to the wolf that are obvious When I got my Husky, she was in a day care at an obedience club in Houston which also taught competition classes. I got interested so off I went with Wolfen. It took eons to get her to pick up a dumbbell! Over the years, my Huskies have earned CDx, UCDs, Rally Novice titles, and CGCs. My favorite dog sport is Rally. I tried showing in conformation myself, but I can t run fast enough for a Husky so I ve found a handler for her. Amaroq Koko Katortak (Koko) is now a Grand Champion. As far as other hobbies go, my big one is still my dogs and probably always will be. I do enjoy writing and cooking. I m married, and he s a GREAT dog sitter, very patient and loving. The most important thing to me, other than keeping my husband happy is keeping my dogs healthy and happy and busy, always training! One thing most of you don t know about me is that I flew a single engine airplane in Houston for years. I also want to write a book about children and dog rescue in planes, called Hounds Aloft. From Laurel Drew: First dog I got that was all my own was Sheikh UD, a greyhound rescued I ve raised 8 or so litters, including one all Ch. Litter and have had group placers and a couple Group winners. I am (or was active) in lure coursing, tracking, conformation, agility and rally and still hope to get more scent work done. Outside of dogs, my hobbies are or were photography, writing, poetry, reading, and a little gardening. I m single, a retired public librarian who specialized in genealogical research, and have written for several magazines. As to why I love greyhounds so much, it s because they are elegant, loving, fabulous couch potatoes (they do 40 mph from the front door to the couch), and are much smarter than folks think. I love all dog sports including greyhound racing which has gotten a far worse rep than it deserves. I also love lure coursing and taking my hounds out to run jackrabbits (don t do that much anymore). I ve had numerous funny experiences with dogs, but if you want to hear the funniest ones, ask me about Quincy (Ch. El-Aur Eloquence CD). You can also ask about training my first show greyhound, Folly to track. She learned in a very interesting way. So that s me in a nutshell. Your Editor Page 1

A Little Club History By Annie Newsted In the early 1970 s SDOC was located on Prospect Ave. south of Menaul, near Washington. At that time all we had to offer students was obedience and tracking, and we did it well. Our basic novice classes were 12 weeks long and at the end, the students would do the full novice exercises as if in a trial. We had our two obedience trials a year, one in May and the other over Labor Day, just like we do now. During that time one of the important couples in the club were Allen and Mickie Griggs. Allen had Golden Retrievers and won High in Trial once with Choctaw. Allen served as President and Mickie was the training director. Both were very involved and helped make the club what it is today. Mickie s job as training director included finding the head trainers for each class, taking all the phone calls from students and registering the classes. It was (and still is) a very time consuming job. Mickie did it well. She was a great instructor and helped many assistants and apprentices learn how to train. Our training methods have greatly changed since that time, but we did what we knew at the time. Allen passed away several years ago, leaving Mickie and his Chesapeake Retriever, Wyatt. Mickie s 80 th birthday is August 20 and she would love to receive cards from SDOC members. Her address is 9613 Arvilla Ct. N.E Please thank her for her part in keeping the club going and helping us get to the place we are now. NEEDED!!! Stewards for our September Trials over Labor Day Weekend. Contact or pix to Annie. We need stewards for the fall Trials! Contact Talya Bowland and tell her what classes you ve entered, what days you are available, and when. Remember free lunch and front row seats!!! taffy88203@yahoo.com Hey gang, let s really make the day for Mickie Griggs on her 80th birthday August 20. She would love to get cards and calls. Her address is 9613 Arvilla Ct. NE, Albuq Annie Newsted may have her phone number. Mickie and her husband, Alan, were very active in SDOC for many years. I remember them from back in the 70s and 80s. Michelle McGuire will be back to teach another Herding Clinic and give private lessons at the Free-To- Be Ranch in Mountainair, NM. It will be held Sept. 3 and 4 (Clinic) and Sept 5, 6, 7 (Privates). Contact Hannah Agee at: hannah.agee@gmail.com I decided to try running contacts with my second agility dog. Running contacts took a lot of training (retraining) and 6 months of NQs in the standard ring while we tried to figure it out. Lately she has been about 80% successful and when it works, running contacts are thrilling. Criteria continues to be a bit iffy. Should she stay or should she go? That is the question. I m now training my third agility dog ( third time s a charm, right? ) and a decision must be soon made regarding what kind of contact behavior she will have. We must begin our steps to build her foundation so her criteria is clear to us both. I have decided on a running A -Frame and a stopped Teeter. The Dog Walk gives me pause. I love running my dog over the Dog Walk but also crave the consistency of the stopped contact. As I review the pros and cons of the two methods, the choice is becoming clearer. SDOC WEBSITE ADDRESS IS Be Sure to Check the Website for complete class information, class applications and special updates. Training Year (per the SDOC Training Regulations) For these purposes, the training year will be from December 1 to November 30 of the following year. The total hours of any class which begins on or before December 1 will be credited to the following training year. Susan Neal Page 3

4 DOU- BLE To register for any Agility class, contact: Stephani Kouretsos at: Com or Q When training our dogs for agility much time is spent teaching contact behavior. Contacts are a huge trouble area for dogs competing in agility and, for the dog s entire agility career, the handler will be obsessed with how or if the dog hit the contact. Therefore, choosing how to train the contact obstacles is a major decision. In order for dogs to perform contacts without fault, they must step into the yellow area on the contact obstacles. This area is called the contact zone. The contact zone insures the safety of the dog. In the excitement of running agility, many dogs would prefer to leap off the obstacle (possibly injuring themselves) rather than proceeding to the end of the Teeter, A Frame or Dog Walk. Contact behavior can break down very quickly when the excitement of showing kicks in. A strong foundation must be built so the dog truly understands what is expected in the contact zone. For this reason it is important to teach the desired behavior using a step by step approach. There are two basic kinds of contact behaviors: running and stopped. REMINDER: Drills cost $10 per dog per session. To register for any Obedience class, contact: Betty Pearson At The criteria for a running contact: dog runs completely through the contact without stopping, hitting the yellow contact zone with two paws. Pros: speed, no interruption of the course flow as the handler keeps running, fun for the dog, and, in the ring, the handler doesn t have to do anything but run. Cons: can be very challenging if one is not a fast runner or thinker, difficult to train, can make for difficult handling- especially if there is a sharp turn after the contact obstacle. The criteria for a stopped contact: dog hits the yellow contact zone by assuming a specific position at the end of the contact zone and waits. For the 2 on 2 off method, the dog s front feet are on the ground and back feet are on the contact. The dog stops in this position and waits to be verbally released. Pros: if stopped criteria is maintained, contacts behavior will be consistent, easy to train, can be practiced anywhere. The method allows the handler to get in position for the next obstacle with an instant to stop and think. Cons: requires handler to be consistent and maintain criteria by holding the dog on the contact until he is verbally released (not always easy in competition), training can be slow. My first dog was confused about what I wanted (typical of all first agility dogs). I chose the stopped method although he wasn t averse to jumping off before reaching the yellow if the mood struck him or I hadn t held my criteria (which wasn t clearly defined for either of us). 5 ScentWork Troops Are At It Again! By Dee Falk Great News on the Nosework Front! We had a small UKC trial on July 9 th in Jarales to prepare for the much larger trial in Longmont, Colorado. This trial offered all five pre-trial odors and one container search. A pre-trial test must be passed for each odor (Birch, Anise, Clove, Myrrh & Vetiver) once before the dogs are allowed to participate in the four searches (container, interior, exterior & vehicle). The Advanced Nosework students and instructors were nearly flawless. The following teams passed ALL five odors: Rennie Fietz & Benjamin (Toy Poodle) Kathy Merlock & Micah (Standard Poodle) Cathy Hyatt, Boudi & Omni (both All Americans) Lisa Berry & Roo (All American) Dee Falk & Amp (Jagdterrier) The following teams passed the following Pre-Trial odors: Dee Falk & Bezel (Border Terrier) Myrrh & Vetiver (already passed the first 3) Rosemary Burtch & Ty (GSD) - Myrrh & Vetiver (already passed the first 3) Lisa Berry & Varro (APBT) Birch Lisa Berry, Venom & Rain (APBTs) Clove (Venom already passed Birch) Jennifer Allen & Cash (BC) Birch (only entered Birch) The container search results: Novice A Containers (5 min time maximum) Micah 2 nd Place seconds Benjamin 4 th Place seconds Novice B Containers (5 min time maximum) Boudi 1 st Place in 7.47 seconds Roo 2 nd Place in 9.18 seconds Amp 3 rd Place in 9.43 seconds Varro 4 th Place in seconds Omni seconds Cash 1.48:73 Superior Containers (5 min time maximum) Ty 1 st Place in seconds Join SDOC s YAHOO! group: Contact Rosemary Burtch at rosybee@earthli nk.net with questions Stay tuned for the Longmont Trial results in the next newsletter Page 5

9 My Life Has Gone To The Dogs MY LIFE HAS GONE TO THE DOGS! I ve had the privilege of living with several Kuvasz over the years and have participated in many venues with them, including conformation, obedience, agility, rally, and tracking. With my Belgian Sheepdogs, I ve added herding to the list, and many years ago I did backpacking and skijoring with my Alaskan Malamutes. Most importantly, all my dogs have been my dearest companions. My life revolves around their health and well being and our activities. My life is richer because I share my life with my dogs, and I ve learned many lessons over the years because of them. First of all, participating in so many venues makes you realize that you will have good days and bad days. You ll win some, and you ll lose some. You will be so close to qualifying that you can taste it, or you will be a mile away, or you ll walk away with a green ribbon, and maybe even a blue one. The really important things, however, are much more cumulative than the results of a single day, or even a single year. You will have shared those experiences with your best friend. You will both learn and grow, and the bond between you will deepen with each and every experience. As an individual, you will live the highs and lows that come with competing, and you will likely be a better person for it. A second wonderful aspect of letting your life go to the dogs is the incredible friendships you develop. The dog community is filled with wonderful people who will be there to celebrate with you and to support you when you need it most. Each and every one of us has the opportunity to be one of those wonderful people who celebrate the success of others and to provide a helping hand when needed. Dog people make the best of friends! Another benefit is that we have continuous opportunities to act as an ambassador for our breed and for the dog world in general. We have the opportunity to show the world how wonderful our dogs are each and every time we venture into the public, and even when we don t. We have the opportunity to be good neighbors and create Kuvasz fans in our neighborhoods. By SDOC Board Meetings are held on the Tuesday prior to General Membership meetings at the SDOC Training Building. Minutes are available for review by contacting the Recording Secretary at kknaughton@g mail.com or at any General Membership meeting. So, if you re new to the breed or to dogs in general, welcome! You have many amazing experiences ahead of you. I encourage you to embrace every opportunity to live life to the fullest with your companion, regardless of what you do together. If you ve been in the breed for a while, I encourage you to embrace new experiences, make new friends, and be an even better ambassador for the breed. Truly let your life go to the dogs. I m so glad that mine has! LeAnn Miller, solarikuvasz@att.net [Although this was written for the AKC Gazette, we obtained permission to reprint it, and I m glad we are doing so as it doesn t just apply to Kuvasz, but to anyone and any breed!] Want to become a member? Get an application in the lobby at the Club building, or download from the SDOC web site! Page 9
