2 January Board Meeting Minutes January 3, 2017 Called to order at: 6:35 Present: Flo Andrews, Renee Wolfe, Dee Dunlap, Diana Behling, Gary Owens, Barb Curtis, Milli Goodman Treasurers report: accepted as submitted. Financials are ahead of last year. Dog show income was down but expenses were less. Training center income is up. Correspondence: Diana received an from AKC regarding a FInancial survey. It has been forwarded to Flo and she will respond to AKC. Training center: We are gearing up for new classes. Milli donated a refrigerator to the club. Show: we are waiting for confirmation on who will take over vendor contacts. Summer outing: No report Winter dinner: The last date to RSVP is January 20. So far, only 12 have indicated an interest. Renee will need count for gifts for members. Old business: None New business: Nosework ORT in May. AKC has a new program to promote junior handling in Obedience and rally. Junior showcase events. Adjourned 7:30 Interesting Canine Facts - The Origins of Dog Phrases & Expressions The expression "three dog night" originated with the Eskimos and means a very cold night - so cold that you have to bed down with three dogs to keep warm. The phrase "raining cats and dogs" originated in 17th Century England when many dogs and cats drowned during heavy downpours of rain and when rivers burst their banks. Their bodies would be seen floating in the rain torrents that raced through the streets giving the appearance that it had literally rained "cats and dogs". The term "Dog Days" dates back to Roman times, when it was believed that Sirius, the Dog Star, added its heat to that of the sun from July 3 to August 11 and created exceptionally high temperatures. The Romans called the period "dies caniculares" or "Days of the Dog".

3 Learn the Breeds: Dog Shows The is the smallest of the six original and distinct spitz breeds of dog from Japan. A small, agile dog that copes very well with mountainous terrain, the was originally bred for hunting. It looks similar to and is often mistaken for other Japanese dog breeds like the Akita Inu or Hokkaido, but the is a different breed with a distinct blood line, temperament and smaller size than other Japanese dog breeds. Sighthounds have distinctive characteristics, features and traits which are perfect for their purpose. Sighthounds have extremely good vision. They also have a long jaw and lengthy neck which assists them in sighting their quarry. Their lean muscular body, deep chest and long powerful legs essential assets when following any fast and agile prey.

4 News from the AKC SURFING DOG FLOAT BREAKS WORLD RECORD AT THIS YEAR s ROSE PARADE By: Randa Kriss January 3, 2017 At this year's Rose Parade in Pasadena, Calif., a float featuring surfing dogs set the world record for longest and heaviest float in Tournament of Roses Parade history. The float, The Lucy Pet's Gnarly Crankin' K-9 Wave Maker, was 125 feet long and weighted 148,250 pounds, reports the laist. A contributing factor to the massiveness of the float was the 90-foot, 8,000-gallon tank that allowed talented surfing dogs to catch a wave on parade day. The surfing dogs could catch a wave and then were transported back to the start courtesy of a mini-cable car system. These talented pups also wore life-jackets and surfed in a heated pool to ensure their safety. The dogs that were chosen to participate, including a Bulldog, Dachshund, and Golden Retriever, were part of a country-wide search for the best surfing dogs. Who even knew there were so many?! In addition to setting the Guinness World Record, the dog-float also won the Extraordinaire Trophy for the most spectacular float.
