4 Hw t Eradicate Rdents and Cats n Islands SUMMARY The Pacific Invasives Initiative (PII) successfully cmpleted the first Hw t Eradicate Rdents and Cats frm Islands Training Curse April 2011, Nadi Fiji. The training curse prvided participants with the knwledge and skills t carry ut rdent and cat eradicatin prjects. The training is based n the Resurce Kit, which is a practical guide t assist prject managers in develping and implementing rdent and cat eradicatin prjects n islands. The Kit prvides best practice prcesses, methds and lessns learned as, well as supprting tls (Guidelines, templates, references etc). Participants f the training gave scres f 100% t questins abut knwing the PII Prject Prcess fr eradicatin prjects and verall pinin f the training. Cmments ffered included: Cngratulatins t PII fr creating this great tl! I especially appreciated the wrked examples all alng the prject prcess ; very useful in the sense f knwing and understanding steps t be taken when I will cme up with prject wrk and Great tl. 5 Hw t Eradicate Rdents and Cats n Islands INTRODUCTION Over the past decades, the eradicatin f rdents and cats has becme an established management apprach in the fight against the impacts f invasive species n island bidiversity. The PII Resurce Kit prvides prject managers with a systematic apprach t planning and implementing rdent and cat eradicatin prjects n islands in the Pacific. The need fr the Resurce Kit came frm PII's experience wrking n invasive species prjects with Pacific agencies. Because invasive species management is a relatively new tl fr island restratin in the Pacific, a cmmn cnstraint fr agencies was access t an authritative and cnsistent prcess and a surce f infrmatin t effectively address the cmplexity f invasive species management. T address this need PII, in cllabratin with wrld leading eradicatin experts, develped a stepwise prcess and supprting tls t prvide prject managers with access t current eradicatin best practice. Use f the Resurce Kit will give Pacific agencies the ability t embark n their invasive species management prjects with greater cnfidence f achieving their desired island restratin gals. The training fcuses n training prject managers n hw t plan and implement rdent and cat eradicatin prjects using the PII Resurce Kit. PII invited eight prject managers frm seven different agencies frm arund the Pacific Regin t participate in the first Hw t eradicate rdents and cats frm islands Training Curse. This training was different frm future Hw t eradicate rdent and cats frm islands training, as it was a pilt. TRAINING COURSE PURPOSE AND OUTCOMES: Purpse 1: T train participants n hw t plan and implement rdent and cat eradicatin prjects using the PII Resurce Kit Outcmes Knw the principles that underpin the Resurce Kit Knw the PII Prject Prcess fr an eradicatin prject Knw the reasns and value fr each stage and step in the prcess Be able t use the Resurce Kit t lcate infrmatin and resurces t assist in cmpleting each step in the prject prcess Knw where t access further learning resurces and supprt Have a plan f where t frm here fr a prject Purpse 2: T test the training curse with participants wh are representative f the target grup. 7 Hw t Eradicate Rdents and Cats n Islands TRAINING CONTENT The training used an interactive learning style; fr each stage presentatins were given and then participants were encuraged t ask questins. This was fllwed by grup discussins and/r wrkbk activities (Appendix 3). At the cmpletin f each stage, participants were given an evaluatin sheet t cmplete. DAY 1- MONDAY 11 APRIL 2011 Prvided infrmatin n: the purpse and utcmes, imprtance f islands, threats frm invasive species, management ptins fr invasive species, resurce kit principles, verview f the PII Prject Prcess, intrductin t the wrked example and participants presentatins n their prjects (Appendix 2) DAY 2 TUESDAY 12 APRIL 2011 Prvided infrmatin n: Stage 1 - Prject Selectin assessing each prject idea and selectin f a prject with the highest pririty Stage 2 - Feasibility Study - scping the prject, deciding whether the target species can be successfully eradicated and identify any key issues that wuld need addressing befre the eradicatin peratin is undertaken Stage 3 Prject Design - detailing hw the prject will be managed and gverned DAY 3 WEDNESDAY 13 APRIL 2011 Prvided infrmatin n: Stage 3 Prject Design cntinued Field trip t Sigatka Sand Dunes carried ut a Feasibility Study DAY 4 THURSDAY 14 APRIL 2011 Prvided infrmatin n: Stage 4 Operatinal Planning, cvering the fllwing three plans: Operatinal Plan: which cvers eradicatin design and lgistical planning Bisecurity Plan: which plans the preventin, surveillance and incursin respnse activities Mnitring and Evaluatin plan t measure the success f the prject Stage 5 Implementatin, there are 3 phases: Pre-Operatinal Phase: final preparatins are undertaken Operatinal Phase: which is the actual remval f the target species Pst-Operatinal Phase: the cmpletin f all the final activities Training Reprt Page 7 f 33

8 Hw t Eradicate Rdents and Cats n Islands DAY 5 FRIDAY 15 APRIL 2011 Stage 5 Cntinued Stage 6 Sustaining the Prject: the n-ging wrk required after the eradicatin peratin has been cmpleted. Bisecurity (preventin, surveillance and respnse readiness) and mnitring utcmes are the main part f Stage 6 EVALUATION SUMMARY This training was different frm future Hw t eradicate rdent and cats frm islands training, as it was a pilt. The purpse f the pilt was t test the training curse with participants wh are representative f the target grup. This required the inclusin f detailed review sessins. These sessins were bth in the frm f written and grup discussins and were held after significant blcks f learning. Participants cmpleted seven reviews that cvered the fllwing: Achievement f purpse(s) fr the learning blck The Resurce Kit The learning apprach (facilitated sessins, SME, wrkbk, exercises, prgress checks etc) Timing Ideas fr imprvements Participants als cmpleted a final evaluatin at the end f the week t assess the verall training. ACHIEVEMENT OF PURPOSE(S) FOR THE LEARNING BLOCK Questin: Hw well did the learning blck achieve its intended purpse (0=nt achieved. 5=Achieved.10=well achieved) Six learning blcks: Intrductin, Stage 1, Stage 2, Stage 3, Field trip and Stage 5 & 6 all received 90% f participants satisfactin with achieving the purpse.
