2 Mission & Areas Served Statements Mission Sunshine Golden Retriever Rescue Corp (SGRR) is a 501(c)3, non-profit organization and formed in 2008 in the State of Connecticut. It was formed to help rescue and save displaced Golden Retrievers and dogs similar in nature (golden-hearted) in need. At SGRR, we rescue Golden Retrievers and Golden Mixes that have been abandoned, abused, or relinquished by their owners. We are a network of volunteers dedicated to finding the best possible homes for the dogs in need. Our volunteers have a desire to save as many homeless dogs that we can. Individually, we can only rescue so many dogs in need. As a group, and with your help, we can help the hundreds of displaced Golden Retrievers and Golden Mixes find their forever homes. SGRR works to rescuing Goldens and placing Goldens in Connecticut and surrounding states. Background Sunshine Golden Retriever Rescue is a 501c3 registered rescue group. Since 2008, the volunteers of SGRR rescue Golden Retrievers who have been displaced, abandoned, abused or relinquished by their owners. We are dedicated to finding the best possible homes for Golden Retrievers and Retriever mixes in need. Overall, our Goldens and Golden-hearted dogs make wonderful pets and adjust well to their new families. Although it does happen, SGRR rarely has perfect dogs in our rescue. We want our applicants to also know that rescued dogs come from a variety of backgrounds. Many rescued dogs will require continued behavioral work due to a lack of training, neglect, or abuse in the dog s previous setting. A patient and loving owner can make all the difference. From experience, we know that these dogs with endearing imperfections can move forward, provided their new family gives them necessary guidance and direction. Love is crucial, but love alone is not enough. Boundaries must be set and rules must be established. Strong human leadership is mandatory. The joys of seeing these goldens become the devoted and contented pets they were meant to be is remarkable. Going one step further, SGRR often takes in dogs that might appear less adoptable because of the physical conditions in which they have been found. We lovingly nurse the dogs back to health and find them homes that provide that extra TLC these dogs need. Our adoption process begins when a homeless Golden Retriever is brought into rescue. Each dog is first provided a medical assessment and any necessary treatment including neutering, heartworm treatment, and vaccinations. We begin evaluating each dog's personality & temperament. We attempt to assess each dog's behavior with other dogs, children, adults, and other animals when available. Though this is not always accurate, we observe our dogs to determine their level of house training, crate training, knowledge of commands, activity level, and exercise needs. Then, we carefully select homes based on the needs of each individual Golden or Golden-hearted dog. Owners of rescued dogs can share with you that often their ideal dog turned out to be the one that did not immediately catch their eye, but were receptive to the suggestions of SGRR s placement coordinators. At SGRR, our goal is to match the dog s needs with the best home among our approved applicants. We encourage our applicants to keep open minds in terms of their preferences. 2

3 Impact SGRR's goal is to rescue and place at a minimum 125 Golden Retrievers each year. (SGRR Adoption Program) Each dog rescued, it is medically examined, neutered, and assessed. The dogs are matched to approved applicants that promise to provide forever homes. Heatworm Positive Program- 60% of the dogs rescued will be heartworm positive and require special medical treatment. The costs for treatment range from $550 to $650 per treatment. Seniors and Special Cases Programs- 10% to 15% of the dogs rescued will require extraordinary medical treatment, and 5% may require special training. Cases usually include dogs 7 years and older or seniors. The cost to treat the dogs in these programs are not covered by adoption fees and the monies must be raised through grants and fund raising efforts. Results: In 2011 and 2012, 111 and 125 dogs were rescued, respectively. Each year, SGRR was able to find safe and loving homes for each of the 236 dogs and obtain funding for those dogs which required additional costs and care. The cases included Heartworm Positive cases and special cases such as Spencer, Luke, and Audie. These three dogs are just a few examples have serious illnesses that SGRR must save. The three had multiple illnesses and injuries (buckshot lodged in the spine, hip dysplasia, one lost and injured eye, and it goes on) which had medical bills exceeding $5000. SGRR volunteers rallied and raised the funds through various fund raisers. SGRR can only continue to rescue the many, many dogs in need if it can continue to find the support of the volunteers and donors. Needs Funding in SGRR's primary need to be able to treat the dogs which require special medical or any extraordinary care such as training before placing the dog into a permanent home. For 2013, SGRR projects to rescue displaced dogs. The Heartworm Program is projected to cost $35,000 to $48,000. Seniors and Special Care Cases are projected to cost SGRR $9,500 to $12,000. These costs vary as the nature of each case can range from several hundred to thousands for treatment. Board Chair Statement Once you rescue a golden or a dog in need, a dog that would have been euthanized if you didn't step up to adopt, you can't help but feel the need to become more involved and help save other dogs that are in the same state or fatal situation. The dogs are helpless yet loving, loving animals that only want the opportunity to be a happy and pleasing companion. If people don't step in to assist and save them, they will never have the chance, never have the opportunity to be that special pet to someone. The dogs are truly innocent victims to irresponsible owners. SGRR has chosen to be a voice to at least a small portion of the millions of displaced dogs. 5 Programs Programs Heartworm Treatment Program Description Due to lack of care, dogs that are not provided monthly heartworm preventative will more than likely become infected with heartworm. Any dog which is found by a shelter and tested as heartworm positive must be medically treated before it is adopted. The cost to treat is $650 to $1,200 depending on location. Since shelters do not have the resources or funds to treat these dogs, they must reach out to rescues such as SGRR to accept the dog into rescue. The rescue then treats the dog to remove the heartworms and then place the dog for adoption when healthy. If rescues such as SGRR were not able to accept those dogs which are infected with heartworm, the dogs would be euthanized by the shelters. 6 out 10 dogs or 60% are positive for heartworm disease. SGRR and fellow rescues are in high demand to save dogs that are neglected and need medical care otherwise they are euthanized by the shelters that do not have the means to treat the dogs. Budget $0.00 Category / Population Served / / Special Care and Seniors Programs Description This program, Special Care and Seniors Program should be possibly called SGRR Doesn't Say Program. Many dogs may come into SGRR's rescue from shelters or directly from owners (owner releases) because the dog has medical issues or behavioral issues which require costly treatment or training. This includes Seniors or dogs 7 years and older. We accepted dogs which had orthopedic issues, buckshot/bullets lodged near bladders, spines, hips, auto accidents, tumors, thyroid illnesses, etc...all causing discomfort to the dog or functional complications. All which require expensive surgery or treatment. We find dogs 7 yrs and older require additional medical care and owners are not able to afford the costs to treat. These cases may range from several hundreds of dollars to thousands but we believe every dog deserves a fair chance to live a happy and comfortable life. These cases are difficult to budget but for 2013 we expect a need for approximately $12,000 minimum. Budget $0.00 Category / Population Served / / Program Comments CEO Comments SGRR is an all voluntteer organization and no one is paid a salary. Funds raised go directly to the care and treatment of all dogs that come into our rescue. Those dogs which fall under one of these progrrams may require special attention but we believe they deserve a pain free and happy life. It is SGRR's mission and goal 5

6 to help as many dogs which need special attention as well as the healthy, displaced dogs. 6
