2 Mission & Areas Served Statements Mission Statement Helping local animals in need. Background Statement Founded in 1967 the Lake Tahoe Humane Society is the second oldest nonprofit organization in Lake Tahoe providing caring service to the animals and people of California, Nevada and visitors from around the world. The Lake Tahoe Humane Society has many functions in the community including; Spay-Neuter Subsidy, Emergency Pet Supplies, Veterinary Financial Aid, Problem Solving, Free Disaster Preparedness Kits, Youth education and outreach programs to promote kindness and compassion, Lost Pet Support and Resource Referrals, Senior Support including animal assisted visitation & mobile pet food supply, D.A.R.T (Disaster Animal Response Team) created to protect and provide temporary sheltering of animals during a disaster. The Lake Tahoe Humane Society and S.P.C.A. is a private 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization supported 100% by private donations. Your gift goes directly to support our programs. There is no national humane society or society for the prevention of cruelty to animals (S.P.C.A.) to help us provide these needed services for our community we solely rely on private donations. Needs Statement Low cost Spay/Neuter program provides Pet Guardians a voucher enabling them to afford getting their pet Spayed or Neutered. The Lake Tahoe Humane Society helps 500 families a year through this program. This is one of our most costly programs costing an average of $60,000 per year. Emergency Veterinary Financial assistance for pets in life threatening situations who s guardians can t afford the necessary medical care resulting in their pet being euthanized. We helped save the lives of over 300 pets this year alone (2014) through this program, costing $55, The Lake Tahoe Humane Society is the only nonprofit who provides this service in Lake Tahoe. Pet Food Bank; providing pet food for those suffering from finical hardship. This program also provides Pet Meals to Bed And Broth to give out to their patrons who come in for their meals weekly and to Tahoe Youth and Family Services for homeless youth who have pets. Currently this program costs approximately $ a year. Education programs providing Humane education curriculums for Lake Tahoe public and private schools, service learning projects, youth group programs & the My Reading Buddy literacy program. Funds are needed to support these education programs to provide materials and to make field trips possible. 2
3 CEO/Executive Director Statement As the Executive Director I couldn t be more proud of the work that the staff volunteers and board of directors of Lake Tahoe Humane Society & S.P.C.A. has done and continues to do for our community. Our Spay-Neuter program is reducing the unwanted pet population making it possible for our county shelter to bring in animals from neighboring shelters that are full, hence saving lives. The Lake Tahoe Humane Society & S.P.C.A. has the only Emergency Veterinary financial aid program in the greater Lake Tahoe area, this is one of my personal favorite programs. There is nothing sadder than to have to euthanize your pet simply because you can not afford the medical care required. Sadly this program is in serious danger of running out of funds, any donations towards this program would greatly be appreciated. We have always offered free pet food to those suffering from financial hardships and recently started offering pet meals though Bed and Broth another local nonprofit who provides meals to the homeless or people in need and have started providing pet food to Tahoe Youth And Family Services so they can distribute among the homeless youth in our community. Being in a disaster area the Lake Tahoe Humane Society also provides free Disaster Preparedness kits to anyone who needs one. It provides all the information you need to know about what to do and how to prepare for a disaster, including temporary pet ID tags, I have pets in my home door stickers, wallet cards and much more. After the Angora fire in 2007 we created our D.A.R.T. program (Disaster Animal Response Team) so now we as a community are ready to provide temporary sheltering for pets in the event of another fire. As a side note; did you know that after Hurricane Katrina FEMA past a law that requires any community which is deemed to be in a disaster area to have a plan for animals. If that service is not provided that community will not be eligible for any FEMA relief funding! If the Lake Tahoe Humane Society & S.P.C.A. were to close it would truly be devastating for the community. We ask for your support so we can continue to help animals in need. Areas of Service Areas El Dorado County Service Categories Primary Organization Category Animal Related / Animal Protection & Welfare 3
