3 Statements & Search Criteria Statements Mission Statement The Mission of the Danville-Boyle County Humane Society is to promote the humane treatment of companion animals through sheltering, adoptions, community education, and spay/neuter programs. Background Statement The DBCHS is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization formed in 1972 to help the many abandoned and unwanted domestic animals in Boyle County. CEO/Executive Director Statement The Danville-Boyle County Humane Society is the only professional organization that takes in homeless pets in our community. We have served Danville-Boyle County for over 40 years. We are determined to educate the public about spay/neuter, animal care and the humane treatment of companion animals. We take in over 2,600 animals each year. We work tirelessly to find homes for as many as we can in our area and transport other animals to communities not facing overpopulation. We are a grassroots organization that is mostly administered by volunteers. We have 5 part-time staff members and hundreds of volunteers. Volunteers are the heart and soul of our organization. We welcome community assistance in every sense of the word. 4 Kentucky We take in cats and kittens from all Kentucky counties. We take in puppies and dogs from Boyle County. Our high-quality, low-cost spay and neuter clinic, Happy Paws, services all Kentucky counties. The clinic is open to pet owners with low and fixed incomes. 4
5 Impact Impact Goals The ultimate goal of the Danville-Boyle County Humane Society is to reach the day when we no longer have a pet overpopulation crisis in our community. We hope to educate the general population about the importance of spay and neutering one's pets. We run a one day a week high-quality, low-cost spay/neuter clinic (Happy Paws) to ensure that spay and neuter is affordable to low and fixed income pet owners. In the meantime, we hope to adopt out as many homeless pets as we can. Adoptions take place at our shelter in Danville and the PetSmart store in Nicholasville, KY. We also host special adoption events. Harder to adopt dogs are helped by our Mutts with Manners program, a program that obedience trains dogs before adoption. Strategies We have opened a high-quality, low cost spay/neuter clinic (Happy Paws) to ensure that spay/neuter surgery is affordable to all pet owners. 80% of the pet overpopulation comes from 3% of pet owners. We strive to educate the public about the importance of spaying and neutering their pets. To date over 8,000 surgeries have been performed, and we are seeing the results. There are fewer puppy intakes from our county than there were 5 years ago. Education programs for children and adults are essential. We are engaged in a large-scale campaign to build a new adoption center. This new facility will provide a nice retail environment for our adoptions. We hope that our adoption rate will increase with this new facility. The goal is to shatter the "dog pound" image and create a space that is clean, pleasant and conducive to making strong adoptions. Capabilities In the end, the pet overpopulation crisis must be addressed individually by each pet owner. We continue to offer high-quality, low-cost surgery to those pet owners who need it the most. We will be partnering with citizens and businesses in our community to create a new adoption center in We hope that granting agencies and foundations will also assist with this large-scale project. Indicators We will know if we are making progress when we see our intake numbers diminish and there are very few homeless animals that come to our shelter. Progress There are many areas for improvement and melioration. We continue to further "professionalize" our organization, improve our outreach to the community, increase our fundraising efforts, and strengthen our adoption rate. For over 40 years we have been the only professional organization in Boyle County that takes in homeless pets. We are a valuable community resource. Our adoption rate climbs each year, and we are taking in fewer puppies each year. Our board of directors encourages flexible thinking, and we are a small organization that is nimble and change is welcomed and encouraged if it means improvements will come. 5
6 Programs Programs Adoptions at the DBCHS and PetSmart Description Nearly 1,200 homeless animals found forever homes as a result of successful adoptions and rescues in The DBCHS encourages potential pet owners to visit the beautiful, clean DBCHS facility to meet potential companion animals. Adoption fees at the DBCHS range from $75 to $100 and include spay/neuter surgery, shots and de-worming, dog licenses and leukemia tests. In the summer of 2008, the DBCHS launched an adoption program at the PetSmart store in the Brannon Crossing shopping center in Nicholasville, KY. Cats and kittens are at the store every day, and puppies and dogs are there on weekends. The adoption fee for animals at PetSmart is $ for puppies and $75.00 for kittens, cats and adult dogs. PetSmart adoptions accounted for 63% of the total number of adoptions in Population Served,, Happy Paws Spay/Neuter Clinic Description The Danville-Boyle County Humane Society opened the Happy Paws Spay/Neuter Clinic in October The one-day per week clinic makes affordable surgery prices available to individuals receiving public assistance or those with low incomes or social security recipients. The clinic is staffed by a paid veterinarian as well as a technician, and over 1,200 surgeries are performed each year. Approximately 30 volunteers are responsible for the clinic operation. Happy Paws is selfsustaining, receiving support from private donations and granting agencies. A separate budget is created for the clinic each year. The clinic won the 2009 Community Impact Award from the Danville-Boyle Chamber of Commerce. As of January 2015 the clinic performed over 9,544 surgeries. Population Served,, 6
7 Mutts with Manners Prison Training Program Description In Fall 2009, The Danville-Boyle County Humane Society (DBCHS) launched the Mutts with Manners program to help homeless dogs find loving homes. Sponsored by the DBCHS in conjunction with the rthpoint Training Center in Burgin, KY (rthpoint Trained Canines Program), the program pairs carefully screened prison inmates with 5 shelter dogs for a 6-week period. Ten inmates, working together with a professional trainer, prison staff and volunteers, provide the dogs with basic obedience training, socialization, behavior modification, and one-onone companionship. In the end the dogs participating in the program graduate with a wealth of valuable skills that help give them an increased chance (or a paw's up!) on finding a loving home. They are all AKC Canine Good Citizen certified. Population Served,, Fostering and Rescue Description The DBCHS greatly values the special volunteer families that agree to foster some of our pets while they are waiting to find permanent homes. Additionally, the humane society works with animals rescue organizations throughout the U.S. to place homeless purebred dogs and cats. Many of our animals are transported to area humane societies that are able to place pets in loving homes. Population Served,, Paws Memorial Park Pet Cemetery Description Paw Memorial Park provides a pleasant resting place for beloved companion animals. Located behind the Humane Society, the cemetery for pets accepts companion animals 150 pounds or smaller and cremated companion animals of any size. Population Served,, Planned Giving Program Description We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give. - Winston Churchill The DBCHS recognizes that even the smallest gift goes a long way to help abandoned and abused animals. Friends of the DBCHS can make provisions in their Last Will and Testament, Life Insurance Policy, IRA Account, or Charitable Trust to help the Danville- Boyle County Humane Society make the world a better place for the homeless animals in our community. Animal lovers and welfare advocates are encouraged to leave a legacy of saving lives. Arranging for planned gifts is easy if you know what steps to take. The DBCHS has designed brochures to highlight the planned giving options available to those who wish to give legacy gifts. We warmly encourage estate planning attorneys, accountants, and financial planners to make this opportunity known to their clients as they discuss estate plans. For more information contact DBCHS director Kathy Nelsen at (859) or dbchs@bellsouth.net Population Served,, 7
