2 Mission & Impact Statements Mission Providing support to pet owners in breaking the cycle of suffering for chained dogs. Background Habitat for Paws is an all-volunteer non-profit organization dedicated to improving the welfare and quality of life for dogs living outdoors. Through our volunteer efforts, we create safer and improved conditions for chained dogs, provide education to the public, and help build healthier communities through awareness and compassion. For dogs living outdoors on a chain, Habitat for Paws reaches out to their families and offers a free fence, a new shelter, and free or reduced cost spay/neuter. With our services, dogs that were once chained/tethered will learn what it is like to live, run, and play in a safe and more comfortable environment. Habitat for Paws ( HFP ) is a small, all-volunteer nonprofit agency who desires to improve the living conditions of dogs living on chains or tethers ( chained ). Numerous risks to the community develop after a dog is chained or tethered more than 12 hours a day. Chained dogs often become aggressive toward people and other animals. Dogs living on the end of a chain or tethered are at risk for attacks by other animals. There are various reasons for chaining a dog. The most prevalent reason is lack of funds available to purchase fencing. Without the proper daily exercise, a puppy growing into a dog becomes energetic and difficult to control in the house. Often the answer families turn to is chaining the dog to keep it on their property, but out of the house. HFP provides services to families which may consist of transportation for spay/neuter surgeries, dog houses and fences. Impact 2015 ACCOMPLISHMENTS 1) Served over 260 Dogs by providing improved shelter, food pans, water buckets, straw and coats in cold weather. 2) Spayed and neutered 72 Dogs. 3) Built or repaired fences which set free 35 Dogs GOALS 1) Meet 150 new families who need support for their dogs. 2) Set free 40 dogs from chains. 3) Formalize program structure to increase efficiency 4) Continue partnerships with Center for nprofit Management and Hands On Nashville to cultivate high caliber Volunteers. 2

Service Categories Primary Organization Category Animal Related / Animal Services NEC Areas of Service Areas Served TN - Davidson TN - Sumner TN - Robertson TN - Rutherford TN - Williamson Habitat For Paws serves counties in middle Tennessee. Current clients live in Davidson, Rutherford, Robertson, Sumner and Williamson counties. Board Chair Statement Our approach to helping each family is kind, positive and supportive. All of the families we meet have financial issues and many have a serious health issue with one of their immediate family members. CEO Statement Habitat For Paws seeks to build a relationship with each famliy to serve as a role model and provide support. Establishing a positive long term relationship with the family owning a chained dog will provide the opportunity for HFP to educate and assist the pet owner in improving the quality of life for their current dog and future dogs. Pet owners who have chained dogs experience a cycle of guilt associated with not being able to take proper care of the dog. As a result of the dog being chained his/her behavior becomes worse. Their lack of socialization may cause them to become aggressive. Dogs on chains are 3 times more likely to bite. Education for the family is an important aspect of HFP s program which is based on building a relationship with the family. Lack of ability to properly care for a dog, is an additional stress for a family who is experiencing economic or health issues. Research has shown that reducing stress improves a person s health and quality of life. Experience has shown that when a fence is built and a dog released from a chain, the family is happy and excited to see that their dog has an improved habitat. 3

Based on HFP s focus to help reduce the euthanasia rate by requiring dogs be spayed or neutered before a fence is built, funding is needed to cover surgery and vaccination costs after grant money is exhausted. We have a fundraising committee in place to identify opportunities beyond specific fundraisers for each build and putting in place events throughout the year to raise funds and reach a wider base of opportunity. 9
