2 Mission & Impact Statements Mission Our mission at SBCHA is to improve the welfare of all animals in our community through various avenues. We strive to educate the public in responsible pet ownership, the importance of spay/neuter and to give voice and shelter to all the unwanted, abandoned, abused animals in our community. Background The Shelbyville-Bedford County Humane Association was established in 1978 as a result of dogs freezing to death in the city shelter. Since then the organization has helped over 11,000 animals find homes, get emergency vet care, get fixed, and live in foster homes or the no-kill shelter (the only one in our area) until good homes are found. We are one of the few shelters in Middle Tennessee that takes in cats as well as dogs. We have a Pet Pantry that helps folks in need of pet food, a community outreach program that helps the elderly, the disabled and low income families fix their animals, get dog houses and establish a safe and healthy place for their pets, we help local law enforcement in animal abuse cases, we have a summer day camp to educate children and their parents on proper pet care and we host an annual Pet Day which includes a 'fun' cat & dog show and awards for animals (and their owners) that have helped make our community a better place. We help improve the quality of life for both the people and animals in our community by reducing the number of unwanted animals running at large, both through rescue and through our spay/neuter program. We are a busy bunch! 3 Areas Served TN - Bedford We help everyone in Bedford County, including the towns of Shelbyville, Bell Buckle, Wartrace, Unionville and Rover Board Chair Statement the CEO/Executive Director and the Board Chair/President are the same person - see comments above CEO Statement This is a small organization that, through commitment by its volunteers, has made a big impact on our community over many years. The people of Bedford County are grateful to have a no-kill shelter and have a deep respect for all the work done by SBCHA on behalf of helping the homeless and abused animals in our county. 3

4 Programs Programs Stray and abused animal rescue Description The animals are housed in the no-kill shelter and foster homes, given appropriate vet care and fixed, and loving homes are found for them; while in the shelter the dogs are housed in large, modern kennels with kuranda beds and access to outside dog yards, cats are group housed in large rooms with picture windows for them to look out of, cubbies and pillows, sleeping shelves at various levels, scratching posts, comfy chairs and cat 'patios' so they can go outside in the sunshine (we feel it is more humane to group house cats in large comfortable rooms than isolate them in individual small cages -caging cats is very stressful for them.) Group housed, the cats can interact with each other and people easily and be in a more normal environment. All kennels and rooms are cleaned daily. Our visiting veterinarian has commented on how healthy and happy our shelter animals are. Last year we placed 58 dogs and 21 cats in new homes. The long term success is that, as we work with other animal rescue entities, we will eventually have all stray dogs and cats in Bedford County in good homes. Program success is measured by increasing the number of animals adopted each year. 4

Several good things arise from this program in that the more people that are helped and educated to have their animals fixed, the fewer homeless animals there are. The ultimate goal is that all pets are fixed and well cared for. The program success is the many people that thank us for helping them fix their animals so they are not faced with unwanted puppies of kittens; and some of the folks that have been helped with emergency veterinary care have become volunteers and some have paid us back financially when they were able. Their gratitude and continuing support is much appreciated and valued. We want to continue to help those in need in our community. Since our 1978 inception we have helped over 10,000 animals and their people. That is a lot and we want to keep helping them. We have a big job in educating the public on appropriate pet treatment and spay/neuter. There are a lot of people that hang on to the idea that a female dog must have at least one litter of puppies to be healthy and then she can get spayed. It is a hard notion to change but we keep trying. The 5

6 younger generation is easier to educate regarding proper pet care and spay/neuter. But we have community outreach to the senior citizens and farmers to continue to spread the word about spay/neuter and controlling the extra pet population, and a day camp for youngsters to teach them about proper pet care. Our Pet Day event is a major effort that reaches out and teaches the value of spay/neuter. Also, since the community is not affluent, we work hard to get grants to continue our work in saving the dogs and cats that are abandoned, and finding them good homes. Our committed no-kill shelter is the only one in this area, and one of the very few in Middle Tennessee that takes in cats as well as dogs. 6

CEO Comments Our major challenge is to diversify the board because frankly there is a huge number of non-profits and civic organizations here to help this community because it isn't very affluent. As a result many folks who would be excellent as board members and volunteers are already committed to other boards and programs - the need here is great in many areas- education, health, job opportunities and animal welfare. So we compete with all those other issues to get the really good people to be on our board. We keep in touch with those folks who are coming off other boards that would be good for our board. Also, since we use so many of the veterinarians in our area to help with the animals, we cannot use them on our board as it would be a conflict of interest. So it continues to be a challenge to recruit the right people with credentials, commitment, time and the financial wherewithal to be board members. However we do not and will not give up, our mission is too important. 10

Our one big expense, of course, is our no-kill shelter that requires part time contract labor for cleaning and animals care. Many grants do not allow funds to be used for this so we have two major fundraisers each year, Celebration Pet Day and the Wine Tasting and Silent Auction to help cover those expenses. We are trying to expand our grant applications further afield so we can grow the program. Also we are starting a 'Community Partners' program with local businesses to generate more stable and committed funding from the community over the next five years. We get no funding from local governments; they have animal control facilities (high-kill shelters) but we are called upon to save some of their animals from being put 12

13 down at our own expense. And we do work together with them to help all the animals we can. Oversight of our finances are handled by a treasurer, an assistant treasurer, and an accountant to keep a tight rein on expenditures and cash flow. Income and expenses are reported to the officers monthly and to the board quarterly. The books are kept in good order and all reports to government agencies are done on time.
