2 Dear Friends Along with our staff and a small army of volunteers, I invite you to join our mission to reduce pet homelessness and make the entire Thumb of Michigan a No-Kill region. We are passionate about saving lives and we know that with the support of animal lovers everywhere we can make this exciting dream a true reality. There are so many reasons why an animal finds refuge in our shelter. Often it s simply because an owner has passed away with no provisions in place for their pets. Sometimes a family will surrender their pet because they can no longer afford to buy food or provide basic veterinary care. More often than not pets with no identification become lost and roam the streets until someone comes to their rescue. We strive to help people in time of need be able to keep their pets in their homes and if necessary, provide new and innovative avenues to place these pets with loving families. No pet should ever be euthanized if it can be adopted into a suitable home. It starts with building a new state of the art complex focusing on animals for all communities to utilize. It will be equipped with the latest technology to give the best possible care to animals waiting to find their forever homes. In addition to a spacious Adoption Center, this new 23,000 square foot facility will provide a variety of programs and services not currently available in this area such as affordable veterinary care, spay and neuter programs and a pet food pantry. Behavior training classes and animal education seminars will take place in a large training room that can double as a disaster relief safe zone for pets. Specialty programs like reading to a shelter pet will benefit both animals and our young people. A separate building on site will provide boarding services, pet daycare, full service grooming and self serve bathing stations. A fenced in dog park and walking path around the entire property will round out our plan to enrich the health and wellbeing of people and pets. Carol Schmidt Carol Schmidt Executive Director Sanilac County Humane Society (SCHS), was founded in June of 1996 as a private nonprofit, federal and state exempt 501(c) 3 organization. For more than twenty years we have been dedicated to improving the lives of pets and people. When we first began our journey, approximately 13 million dogs and cats were being euthanized nationally each year. Today, that number has dropped to 4 million, however our ultimate goal is to see that number fall to zero. We are the only certified No-Kill Animal Shelter/Rescue in Michigan s Thumb, serving St. Clair, Sanilac, Tuscola and Huron Counties.

3 Sanilac County Humane Society (SCHS) Home to all our furry friends Sanilac County Humane Society has a fascinating history dating back to Initially, animals were cared for in homes of compassionate people until one day a group of big-hearted volunteers purchased a building in the year Renovations were made and the shelter opened in August, Schedules, policies, and guidelines were established to keep the shelter running smoothly 365 days of the year. Every day volunteers feed, water and care for 50 dogs and cats with morning and evening teams. Our two constant and greatest needs are volunteers and donations. Without them, our efforts to rescue homeless animals could not continue. We are grateful for the wonderful volunteers that give their time to our shelter, day in and day out, as well as the donations we receive from our dedicated community members.

4 Off the streets... into loving homes SCHS has provided visitors with exciting, heartwarming experiences for several years. We have had plans to expand the current shelter in the future. That time is now. We have grown rapidly over the past years and found we must expand to continue saving animals. Our current building is over a hundred years old. We are starting from the ground up to build a new upgraded facility. This will enable us to save and serve six times the amount of animals in our new shelter, going from our current maximum allowed of 50 cats and dogs to 300 cared for every day! The word had gotten around that we are a No-Kill shelter. When animals are brought to us, people know they will be loved and cared for while waiting to be adopted by a wonderful family. 6 A NEW FOCUS Expansion Plans Raising the funds to accomplish this mission became the overall focus for every member, volunteer, and staff. Immediate planning began to recruit volunteers, architects and designers to create a new Facility and Fundraising Campaign that would address the present and future needs of an outstanding No-Kill Animal Shelter. Once completed, the Shelter will be an exciting place to visit. Whether you re looking to add a furry new addition to your family or bringing your pet in to have their medical needs treated, everything will be located under one roof. We are now entering the early phases of building our new home and need your help to fulfill our mission. You can be part of ground-breaking history!

7 Building Campaign State-of-the-Art Facility Our most pressing need is to complete the Fundraising Campaign. We are launching a $4 million Campaign to cover the construction costs of this critical new facility. It will be the future home for animals that have lost their way. We will keep them safe and healthy as they wait for a lucky family to give them a home. The new 23,130 sq. ft. facility will have enough space to offer: 3,100 sq. ft. K-9 facility including an indoor / outdoor Multi-Purpose Training Room, Dog Room, Dog Run, Puppy Nursery and Temporary Housing for Emergency Animal Disaster Relief 2,450 sq. ft. Cattery and Kitten Nursery with an additional 2,300 sq. ft. future expansion wing 3,100 sq. ft. Meeting & Training Center including an indoor / outdoor patio space connected to facilities for seasonal events 7,600 sq. ft. Veterinary Clinic and Treatment Facility that includes spacious Exam Rooms, Surgical Wing, Grooming Room and Animal Intake Center with Indoor & Outdoor Isolation Areas 6,800 sq. ft. Leadership Goals and Campaign Strategy SCHS remains committed to securing funding for the entire Shelter. Our Campaign will be reaching out to potential donors from all philanthropic markets including individuals, foundations, corporations and community groups. The Campaign will be measured by the response from the community to our requests for support. There will be an opportunity for everyone to support our Campaign in a variety of ways. We need the community to stand with us during this endeavor and help in any way possible to give this Campaign a positive outcome. Since our inception, we have saved nearly 9,000 animals from being euthanized and have spayed or neutered 8,166 feral cats. Sanilac County Humane Society s Mission cannot be fulfilled without expanding. We have our new building plans drawn and we re ready to see our new facility become a reality, but we cannot do it alone. Our organization is run solely by volunteers and public donations. 13 Capital Campaign Leadership Community Support Leadership and preparation for a Capital Campaign are key ingredients to any successful Campaign strategy. We have recruited an outstanding number of dedicated volunteers that have accepted the challenge to achieve our goals & objectives to raise the funds for our new facility. Each Campaign Building Committee Member will be introducing this important project to the community. We are honored to have exceptional leadership moving our Campaign forward. The Capital Campaign Committee will secure the funding for this special project. After reaching our fundraising goal, the Board and Campaign Leadership Team will continue overall fundraising to ensure our shelter remains one of the most comprehensive facilities in Michigan. Our fundraising will address all areas for the new building costs during our overall Building Campaign, as well as future operational expenses.
