2 Mission & Impact Statements Mission The mission of the Humane Society of Dickson County is;to give voice and shelter to unwanted, abandoned and abused animals in our community and find them forever homes. To teach the importance of spaying and neutering and educate the public in responsible pet ownership. Background Established in 1989, the Humane Society of Dickson County is dedicated to educating the public in responsible pet ownership and the importance of spaying and neutering their pets. We strive to give a voice and shelter to unwanted, abandoned and abused animals in the Dickson community. We provide a provide a clean, safe and healthy environment to the animals we house, and we treat them with kindness and compassion. We accept animals from all of Dickson County, including the following Tennessee cities: Dickson, Burns, Charlotte, Cumberland Furnace, Slayden and White Bluff. We are a limited intake facility and maintain an active waiting list. Additional support is provided through our foster program for both Cats and Dogs, and we continue to develop a list of partner agencies for intake. Impact In 2017, the Humane Society of Dickson County placed over 750 animals in forever homes. We have expanded our role in the community by visiting Nursing Homes and Schools with our animals, and partnering with the Red Cross to help when families are in crisis by holding their pets for them. We take pride in treating all the animals in our custody with kindness and compassion.three of the goals for the organization in 2017 are:to increase the amount of spaying and neutering in Dickson County through educational programs and funding for those who could not otherwise afford to have their animal(s) spayed or neutered, and To increase the number of animals we take in and then place in forever homes. To start a Trap, Neuter, Return program for stray cats. Needs Being responsible for the care of approximately 140 cats and dogs everyday takes resources.like most nonprofits, the Humane Society of Dickson County's biggest needs are for donations of time, talent, and treasure. The staff is small and volunteers are needed to help provide care for the dogs and cats at the shelter. The quality of life for animals at the shelter increases greatly when people are available to walk the dogs and play with the cats.volunteers are also needed to help transport and provide care for animals during adopt-a-thon events at PetSmart and other funraisers. Foster families agree to take animals into their home and provide them with care while forever homes are secured.donations of cash and in-kind gifts are critical to our success in providing care to the animals at the shelter. No matter how small the donation is, it helps. Other ways to donate, support, or volunteer The Humane Society of Dickson County relies on the support of volunteers and the financial contributions from our community to help care for the animals entrusted to our care. You can mail a check or bring cash to 311 Tennsco Drive, Dickson, TN, 37055, or call to make a donation You can also donate through our website, or on our Facebook page. 3 Board Chair Statement One of my greatest joys is to watch a previously abandoned dog or cat cuddle in the arms of their new family. That animal may have been abused or neglected for years before finding refuge at our shelter. Our volunteers and staff would have gently bathed him, tended to his medical needs, fed and cared for him. But nothing can compare to finding a safe and loving forever home.this year, The Humane Society of Dickson County takes a big step forward as we move our shelter into a new, larger building. Thanks to the generous donations of our community and corporate sponsors, we will have the space and tools to care for the homeless pets in our area, but we can't stop there. We need your donations to support our on-going operations and spay/neuter programs. Please consider giving now. Thank you! 4 Programs Programs Animal Shelter & Adoptions Description The Humane Society of Dickson County animal shelter has a limited intake policy. The shelter will hold approximately 130 cats and dogs.there are more homeless and abandoned animals needing homes in Dickson County than there are places to care for them. When the shelter reaches capacity, the staff has to place animals on a waiting list. This is not easy on staff or the individuals wanting to find immediate homes for the animal(s) in their care, but this is a reality for animals in Dickson County. When there is space staff accepts dogs and cats from Dickson County and cares for them until they are adopted. The fee is $20 per animal or $30 for a litter. The pet has to be healthy, friendly, and social. Feral animals will be turned away and directed to animal control. Anyone can adopt an animal from the shelter. The adoption fee for dogs is $125 and cats are $50.00, they all come vetted, spayed /neutered (or appointment has been made with a vetenarian partner) and microchipped. Budget Category Animal-Related, General/Other Population Served,, Free / Low Cost Spay / Neuter Program Description Tennessee is among 22 states trying to reduce dog and cat overpopulation through the sale of "Animal Friendly" license plates. When drivers purchase the special "Animal Friendly" license plates for their cars, Tennessee sets aside a portion of the proceeds for spay/neuter funds. We are a receipent of this grant anad use it to help stop pet overpopulation in Dickson County. Studies show that low income families are two times more likely to have an unaltered pet. To qualify for the free/low-cost spay/neuter program, adopting parties need to show proof of some form of government assistance. Budget 1500 Population Served,, Community Information Description HSDC staff and volunteers visit local schools, civic groups and other community organizations to teach adults and children about responsible pet ownership and the humane treatment of animals. Population Served Adults,, 4
5 Pet Assisted Therapy Programs Description Pet therapy provides a source of hope and pleasure for people of all ages facing difficult times in convalescent homes, hospitals, mental health centers, abused children's homes and juvenile detention centers. HSDC volunteers bring canine and feline warmth to people who aren't able to experience the joys of pet ownership. Budget 500 Population Served,, CEO Comments On any given day there are 55 animals at the shelter receiving care, and during the week there are more than 100 visitors and 90 phone calls. We could not provide for the animals nor place them in new homes without our donors and volunteers. Thank you for donating your time and money to the Humane Society of Dickson County. Our greatest strength lies in you, our supporters. You give us the opportunity to provide care to the animals and give them another chance. 5
