This year the committee who selects the recipient of the Good Sportsmanship award consisted of past recipients Rae Reinhart (2008), Stacy Judge (2006), Bill Allen (2004), and Sally Payne (2002). The award was renamed in 2005 to honor Dorothy Keck, the first club member to ever receive a good sportsmanship award when it was sponsored by the Gaines Dog Food Company. When Gaines stopped sponsoring this award, the club felt that this concept was too important to drop; and it was then called the Youngstown All Breed Good Sports Award. When Dorothy died in 2005, the club wanted to honor her lifetime membership and commitment to the club and so renamed this award To some who knew Dorothy, she was your second mother; or maybe in her later years, a second grand-mother. But to everyone who knew her, Dorothy Keck was a mentor and friend. She loved her dogs, had a great eye for a good one and just embodied good sportsmanship. The club decided to honor her by renaming this award in her memory. This years recipient is Jay Wootten. She has been a YABTC member since Jay divides her time with us in her paying job as a professor at Kent State University. Jay has a Border Collie named Patch. Patch & Jay s photo are on the wall above our kitchen in honor of their accomplishments as Agility Trial Champions. She has been an agility instructor for years, and is also our agility trial secretary. While you may think that it is an easy job, it is anything but. Jay spends an average of 140 hours entering data, corresponding with entrants and the AKC, and solving problems before the trial ever begins. She does this 2 times a year for the Club and yet receives no additional discount for any classes or for her membership dues. She also trains in agility, herding, obedience & rally with her newest Border Collie addition, Breeze. Jay often takes time away from her own training to help a fellow student or exhibitor. At some trials, she has even missed her own runs, because she was helping an exhibitor. We are so lucky to have someone as generous as Jay in our Club. Although there are about 175 of us, she is always among the few members that our Club can depend on to get the work done. Without volunteers like Jay, YABTC would truly suffer. 2 Dear Friends at YABTC, In October of 2009, I wrote to you about my Teddy Roosevelt Terrier, Percy. Since then, we have been training diligently, to master skills in Obedience. I have some good news to report. It is not momentous news, as so many of you have such outstanding accomplishments, but for Percy and me, his earning a CD in Novice is a real achievement. The third leg occurred recently under UKC Judge, Marilyn Tomaszewski, at the June 26th UKC show, put on by the Carnation City Kennel Club at Sun Beau Valley Farm. We received a score of 187, and a second place ribbon. Not great, but this was a big moment for us. Showing out of doors is not easy. Getting your dog s attention on grass, in a strange place, with trains passing by, has been daunting. But we did it! Besides working toward this goal, Percy and I have had other adventures. You will remember, his book, PERCY The Perfect Puppy, which is on display in the glass case in the hall at the club. In there now, too, is the second and final book I recently wrote. It is the sequel, entitled PERCY Growing Up. As with the first, I have donated copies to the club. If you would like to purchase one, all the money goes to YABTC. Similarly, I have donated, our Percy books, to the Animal Welfare League of Trumbull County. They are building an awesome new Animal Welfare Care & Education Center. Some of you will remember the presentation made at YABTC. Percy and I have done two book signings for them and sold quite a few copies. Our donation is going toward this worthy project. I hope others will keep them in mind and help if possible. In addition, Percy and I have been to the Woodlands Assisted Living complex in Ravenna. He has charmed the residents, while I have read to them of his adventures. Currently, we are trying Agility. Percy is fast and fearless and we are having fun. But my heart will always be with Obedience, as I consider it the true foundation for a well-behaved, companion dog. Percy is just that. 2 Youngstown All Breed Training Club August 2010

3 Sharon Phillips and Tammy Hunt, you have taught us well! I will always be grateful for your wisdom and encouragem ent. And thank you to all of you at the club who have cheered us on! I took a couple of pictures of Percy getting ready for the recent show. He had to be sleek and clean to appear in the ring. This required the bath, complete with the PINK towel finale. We finished June 5, 2010 under Judge Ellen Adomelis at the K-9 Konnection Show in Beltsville, Md. She had scores of 96 third place, 87, and 89. ~ Janet Moore My curly coated retriever Ch Choccashaw s Dawn Comes Quickly was awarded a Judge s Award of Merit at the UKC Top Ten Invitational in Richmond, IN on July 9 th. ~ Sue Davis at Canfield, our Peggy ( westie, 21 months ) was in Rally Novice B on 2 days. On Friday she earned a score of 96 and FIRST PLACE! and on Saturday she got a score of 92 and was just out of the placements, but finished her Rally Novice title! Peglette is now known as Bitz of Morning Mayhem, RN and her littermate, Mayhem's O'Henry at Cabinwood Farm won the Open Dog class, and ended up Reserve Winners Dog to a 5 point major! on Thursday, and placed everyday at the Madison Shows he went Winners dog both days for 1 point each day ~ Pat Ray & Loretta Nells August 2010 Youngstown All Breed Training 3

4 FYI Membership Our annual dues were due on July 01. Please get a form online or in the building. Instructors and lifetime members are also required to submit their renewal forms. If you just joined this year, contact Judy Drotar for your renewal amount. New member s renewal fees are prorated according to the month that they joined. Policy The Policy Committee, chaired by Elaine Shively met on July 21, 2010, at 7:30 PM. They reviewed all of the Board & General membership notes and proceeded to pencil in the changes that were approved by either a Board or membership motions & subsequent votes. This is my 11 year old Shetland Sheepdog UROC UCDX Janrem Surprise Ending CDX RAE9 ASCA CDX finishing her Rally Advanced Excellent 9 Title (RAE9). She finished on June 11, 2010 at the Westmoreland County Obedience Training Club Show under Judge Rick Garvin. She placed in 18 of the 20 classes needed to succeed for this title. ~ Janet Moore Program We have been having trouble finding new programs and member attendance for our programs. At the picnic, it was suggested that individual members sign up to get & coordinate speakers for our programs in a manner similar to signing up for brag cakes. A brag from the Steel Valley Cluster -- Brownlee Sean Thornton RN (aka "Trooper") entered Novice B for the first time at the Steel Valley Cluster in Canfield (August 5-8, 2010) and came home with a new CD title. 5 A Place to Go With Your Pets Those canine and/or feline clients who desire spa treatments can avail themselves of the music, aroma, massage, or hydro therapies offered at the Wooflands. Trainer Kathy Ward offers group obedience classes in the 4,500 square foot training center. The training center features a well-lighted facility with a rubber floor, mirrored walls, and air conditioning for the canine students. Private lessons are also available. The training center also offers programs dealing with other areas of interest such as rally and agility. The entire Wooflands operation is efficiently and effectively administered by Manager Erin Mills, who did a superb job of coordinating the Rally Seminar (as well as attending with her Standard Poodle, also beautifully groomed by Kelly). On Saturday, July 24, 2010 I presented an Introduction to Rally Seminar at Nemacolin Wooflands Pet Resort & Spa in Farmington, PA. Nemacolin Wooflands is a luxury pet resort and spa located on the grounds of Nemacolin Woodlands Resort. Situated on over 2,000 scenic acres in southwestern Pennsylvania, approximately 70 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, the Woodlands is Pennsylvania s only 5 star/5 diamond resort. They are a very pet friendly resort complete with a canine ambassador named Bentley. Nemacolin Wooflands provides a complete pet resort experience. Services for the four-legged clients include daycare, boarding (private condos and luxury suites featuring Kuranda beds, TV s and webcams are available), therapy including a heated swimming pool and grooming services. The professional grooming staff caters to every client s wishes. Groomer Kelly Means attended the seminar with her immaculately groomed mini Poodle. I led the participants on a four-hour introduction to AKC Rally. The program began with a short history of Rally. This led into a discussion of the make-up of the Rally program and what Rally participants can expect from the sport. We then touched on the competition aspect of Rally. The remainder of the session was spent on the training floor learning some Rally skills and trying out many of the Rally exercises. The seminar finished up with most of the participants running through a competition Rally course. I d like to thank the Nemacolin Wooflands staff for inviting me to come down, and for all the effort they put in to make this Rally Seminar a success. 7 SUMMER FOOD DRIVE Northeast Ohio Labrador Retriever Rescue Help us feed all of the dogs in need this summer! Now through September 1st This is a difficult time for rescue groups. We are currently trying to help more homeless dogs than ever and our supplies are running low. Please help us help them by donating food and other supplies at any participating drop-off location. 9 Congratulations Randy Simmons & Jaeger. Jaeger did it again. Here is the photo that will appear in the 2011 Weimaraner Club of America calendar. Frightened Pup? Is your puppy frightened by the unfamiliar? Make the world friendly and you'll have a best friend indeed. Well-adjusted puppies are socialized to normal life early on by being exposed to many sights and sounds. Introduce your pup to different people and environments, making sure to supervise, especially with children. Puppies need to experience loud noises, such as vacuum cleaners, music, and other daily household sounds. To meet other puppy pals, sign up for puppy classes or visit a dog park in your neighborhood. Just be sure vaccinations have been completed. Shy Dog Is your new dog still a bit timid in his new surroundings? Raise his confidence and comfort level with a little extra support and patience. Sit on the floor and let your dog decide when to approach you or explore his new home. Hold a treat in your open hand so that coming to you represents a positive experience. If he stays tucked away some place, try enticing him out of his space by setting a couple of treats just out of his reach. You can gradually increase the distance from his safe place. If your dog doesn t respond, simply go about your business and give him time. He ll make a move when he s ready. Reward any signs of curiosity Pooch Playtime When selecting toys for your dog, not just any old item will do. If you have children, choose toys for your dog that won't be confused with your children's playthings. Also, think twice before giving him old shoes to chew on: Pretty soon he may start chomping on your good stuff! Instead, offer toys or bones made of hard rubber, nylon, or rope. And remember to offer praise when he plays gently with an appropriate toy. If your pup is overly protective of treats, like pig ears or real bones, work on training him to "trade" one treat for another. Working Dog Would you prefer that your office go to the dogs? A recent survey indicates that the majority of dog owners would put in longer hours if their dog could accompany them to work, and one out of three said they d take a pay cut for the perk. While most pooch acceptance is found in small businesses, a few large companies welcome employee dogs. August 2010 Youngstown All Breed Training 9
