2 Skillathon Is Mandatory Dog skillathon will be held on Saturday, July 22, 2017 at the Lorain County Fairgrounds. Your skillathon score will become part of your showmanship final score. (NOT participating in a showmanship class will NOT exempt you from this requirement) For those exhibitors going for the Premier Exhibitor Award, skillathon is required. All dog members will be participating in knowledge interview and project book judging on this date. Books will NOT be judged at the Monday or Tuesday fair show. Be prepared to identify the following parts of a dog using the showmanship age levels: Junior = Body Parts Intermediate = Foot Senior = Skeleton All age groups will need to be able to identify: Dog Breeds Animal Handling/Management Equipment Interview Questions Information can be found in Chapter 1-7, 11, and the glossary of the current Dog Resource Handbook. Some State Showmanship questions might be used and will serve as a good study guide, and can be found at: Make-Up Test Those who can not make the July 22nd date at Lorain County Fairgrounds will have the chance to take a written make-up test at the Extension office. To be eligible for the test, participants must submit a letter or , with acceptable reasons why they cannot attend, to the Extension Office by June 2nd, The office will then set up a time for the participant to come take the make-up test. 3 Right Project / Right Book Poster Projects Only #200 All About Dogs #201D You and Your Dog #201W Working Dogs These will be judged at the Ag Products/Still Life Judging on August 9th NRTL. You will need a poster and your completed Dog Record Book. Project #201 D & W also require the Dog Resource Book. (201R) Live Dog Projects #201O Obedience (Regular Obedience and Rally Classes) #201S Showmanship #201P Performance (Agility) #365 Helping Hands (PMC) These projects will be judged on August 21st and 22nd at the fairgrounds. An exhibitor must do skillathon and attend two dog fun shows prior to fair to participate. All live projects require the one time purchase of the Dog Resource Book (201R). Each year an exhibitor must fill out a NEW project record book. If you are unsure which project to enroll in contact your advisor or one of the dog club advisors listed to the right. 4 Dog Class Progression You enroll in a Dog Project, but when you go to a show you have to be in the right class. Following is a brief description of how to progress from one class to another. Obedience Project #201O First Year Beginner Or Pre-Novice A (Jr. or Sr.) Non-Competitive Class Competitive Class Designed for the young Non Experienced Dog & Handler Exhibitor or puppy. All exercises on lead Pre-Novice B (Jr. or Sr.) Experienced dog or handler Same exercises as A class All exercises on lead (Heel, Figure 8, Stand for Exam, Recall, Long Sit & Down) Can remain in this class as long as want unless win at the fair. Novice A Heel and Figure 8 are done on lead All other exercises are done off lead (Heel Free, Stand for Exam, Recall, Long Sit & Down) No Jr. / Sr. Levels Novice B Exercises same as in A Class Can remain in this class as long as want. No Jr. / Sr. Levels Graduate Novice A. Heel on Lead All other exercises are done off lead (Figure 8, Drop Recall, Dumbbell Recall, Recall over High & Broad Jump, 3 minute Long Down with handler out of sight. May do this class for one year only No Jr. / Sr. Levels Graduate Novice B Exercises same as in A Class Can remain in this class as long as want. No Jr./ Sr. Levels

5 Showmanship Classes Project #201S Showmanship is broken down into A & B classes. An exhibitor may show for the first year in the A class of their age group, then must move on to the B class of their age group. Age 8-11 Junior A Age Intermediate A Junior B Age Senior A Senior B Intermediate B Exhibitors are judged on Handler Appearance & Attitude (Make sure to wear proper & appropriate clothing) Dogs Grooming Handling of the Dog (Points are given for the ability to show the dog s bit, stacking, gaiting, patterns, control of dog, consideration of other exhibitors, handlers attention to judge, use of equipment smoothness of movement. Either the judge or another person will conduct a dog knowledge age-appropriate interview, using the Dog Resource Handbook. Rally Classes Project #201O Beginner Rally A First Year Dog & Handler All exercises on lead 5 to 10 stations Novice Rally A Third year Dog or Handler All exercises on lead 10 to 15 stations Advanced Rally A All exercises are done off lead 12 to 17 stations Beginner Rally B Second year Dog or Handler Exercises same as in A Class Novice Rally B Fourth year or more dog or handler Exercises same as in A class Advanced Rally B All exercises are done off lead Exercises same as in A class

6 Agility Project #201P All dogs must be at least 18 months of age as of fair week. All classes have a three (3) minute time limit. Beginner Agility A Beginner Agility B First year dog & handler Exhibitor and / or dog in their second year All obstacles done on lead with a quick release collar Or an exhibitor with a new or second dog. 10 obstacles All obstacles done on lead with a quick release collar A-Frame, table, pipe tunnel, six hurdles) 10 obstacles (A-Frame, table, pipe tunnel, six hurdles) Exhibitor may remain in this class. Level 1 (Elementary Agility) Level 2 (Intermediate Agility) Open to a dog & handler used to off lead work. They are posted at: Members exhibiting through 4-H MUST HAVE an Extension Educator s signature on their entry. Please DO NOT wait until the last day to request a signature from the 4-H Extension Educator, as schedules do not permit them to be in the office everyday from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. It is suggested you call ahead of time to check on their availability to get a signature. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL 2 OR 3 DAYS BEFORE THE ENTRY IS DUE.

7 Agility Clinic May 30th, June 13th & July 18th, 2017 Lorain County Kennel Club Grounds St. Rt. 511, Oberlin 6:30 to 7:30 for Beginner and Level 1 (Elementary) 7:30 to 8:30 Level 2 (Intermediate) and Level 3 (Senior) Instructor Alicia Johnson Not everyone has access to agility equipment to practice with, making this a great opportunity. Make sure to bring your dog s quick release collar and 6 lead. What To Take To A Fun Show! Making a tack box out of a small toolbox or canvas bag can make getting ready for a show or just going to a club meeting with your dog a lot easier. 1. Your Dog should be bathed and groomed 2. Your dogs choke or Quick Release (For Agility shows) collar and 6 Obedience and Showmanship leads. 3. A water dish and water 4. Create or Blanket for your dog to lie on. 5. Lawn chairs for you and your parents 6. Dog s comb & brush and treats (if you use them) 7. Your project and reference books 8. Poop Pick-Up Bags Equipment Needed Obedience & Rally: Dogs in obedience must wear well fitting slip collars (no prong collars) of appropriate length. They may be of leather, fabric or chain with two rings, one on each end. Obedience martingale training collars will also be permitted. The leash may be of leather, nylon or cotton webbing and should be 6' in length. (No chain leashes!) Collar should be free of any tags, bells, etc. Showmanship: Exhibitors in this class may use either a chain or fabric slip collar. The leash may be of fabric or leather and long enough to allow for easy handling of the dog. Martingale type show leads are also acceptable. Collar should be free of any tags, bells, etc. Brace: Coupler must be no shorter than 6 inches. Agility Quick Release Collar

8 Dress Code Fun shows and Fair are meant to be enjoyed. You are expected to dress comfortably according to the weather. But there are a few rules: No Jeans or Shorts Soft Soled Shoes, No Sandals or Filp Flops No Shirts With Advertising No Tank Tops No Club Shirts Skirts Must come at Least to the Knee Long Hair should be tied back. Fun Show Participation Requirement Before the fair each exhibitor is required to attend at least two shows with each dog they are showing to qualify to show at the fair. Following is a list of fun shows as scheduled as of this date. Limited information is available, watch Paw Prints for show updates. Dog Council recommends that exhibitors and their dogs attend as many shows as possible for practice and socialization. 12 Arm Bands Each exhibitor will be issued an arm band number at the first show they attend. This number identifies you and your dog for all the shows you attend in You are responsible for your number, should you loose your armband another can be purchased for $1.00. If you are showing two dogs make sure you are wearing the number for the dog on the other end of your lead. K-9 Royal Court Applications K-9 Royal Court is sponsored by Lorain County Dog Council. The purpose is to recognize 4-H youth who are participating in the Dog Program. This is not a popularity contest. Contestants earn points by helping at fun shows and other 2017 dog activities. They are also required to write two essays on subjects picked by Dog Council. They must provide three references for which points are also earned. Their skillathon score is also figured in as is their participation in showing at the fun shows. King and Queen applicants must be between the ages of 15 and 18 as of January 1, Prince and Princess applicants must be between the ages of 12 and 14 as of January 1, 2017 All applicants must be in at least their third (3) year of showing a live dog project. Dog poster projects do not count toward the three years.
