Box 397 North Jackson, Oh Tally Ho! ~ Nikki Puccini "Lure Coursing is a performance event developed in the early 70's by Lyle Gillette and other California sighthound fanciers who hunted jackrabbits in the open field, which risked the harm caused by barbed wire fencing. They invented lure coursing as a safer, more controlled sport for sighthounds that would recreate the physical requirements of open field coursing, allowing them to continue testing the functional abilities of their sighthounds. The hounds chase plastic bags on a course laid out to simulate escaping game." From the American Sighthound Field Association website Until recently, Lure Coursing titles were available only to sighthounds. Other breeds could attend practice runs for fun but could not compete in tests or trials to earn titles. This ended when UKC introduced all-breed lure coursing tests in AKC followed suit with their introduction of the Coursing Ability Test (CAT) earlier this year. The CAT test is open to all non-sighthound AKC breeds, Miscellaneous breeds, FSS breeds and PAL registered dogs. For the CAT, dogs run alone and the runs are not competitive. Dogs measuring under 12" at the withers and/or brachycephalic dogs will run a course that is approximately 300 yards, all other dogs will run a course that is approximately 600 yards. Courses are roughly rectangular in shape with turns no sharper than 90 degrees. To pass, the dog must complete the course with enthusiasm and without interruption within a stated maximum amount of time which is 2 minutes for the 600 yard course and 1 1/2 minutes for the 300 yard course. Suffix titles are Coursing Ability (CA) with three passes, Coursing Ability Advanced (CAA) with ten passes, Coursing Ability Excellent (CAX) with twenty five CAX2 for fifty passes (higher numbered title will be awarded for every additional twenty five passes). Owners interested in trialing lure coursing with their dog should ensure their dog is in good physical condition. Overweight or poorly conditioned dogs are at risk of injury in this sport. While lure coursing requires no specific training, you can develop your dog's prey drive using a "flirt pole" - a toy attached to a nylon cord that you can whip around and encourage your dog to chase. Horse lunge whips make great flirt poles. When you first start, let your dog win the toy pretty easily but make it progressively harder as your dog gets more into it the game. Many dogs take right to lure coursing - they see the lure moving, dogs chasing it and become very, very excited. Some dogs are interested but need to gain more confidence or be better conditioned to run full courses. It can be helpful to attend practice runs (often held after lure coursing events) with your dog a few times prior to a test but it is not a requirement. Dogs can earn CA legs their first time being exposed to lure coursing, so don't let a lack of experience keep you from giving it a try! 2 For your first test, get there early and watch the sighthounds running (most CATs are held after regular lure coursing events). This will give you an idea of what to expect and you'll learn a lot from watching and listening. Be sure you bring plenty of water, a slip lead (needed for releasing your dog on the lure) and a crate. You will need to take your dog to "Roll Call" prior to the test each day. During Roll Call, each dog is checked for signs of lameness and females are checked for signs of estrus. Lame dogs or bitches in season cannot participate and refunds will be given in those cases. For safety reasons, dogs must run naked with no collar or harness. Dogs are held at the start line with the leash fashioned to release quickly when one end is dropped. The Huntmaster, dog's owner and dog are the only people on the field during each run. The Huntmaster checks with the judge and operator, who are positioned in a spot away from the course that gives a good view, asks if you are ready and then says "Tally-Ho!" at which point you release your dog to chase the lure. While the dog runs the course, the handler stands near the finish line watching and waiting for their dog to return. During lure coursing, you will hear the phrase "Hold Your Hounds" fairly often at a coursing event and with good reason. Watching lure coursing can turn even some mild mannered dogs into wild beasts - make sure you hang on tight! On November 5th and 6th, North Coast Coursing Club of Ohio hosted a Coursing Ability Test at Austintown Park. Quite a few YABTC members showed up for a day of fun and good company. Tally-Ho! Brags The girls and I had a pretty busy couple of months! I entered Bailey the beginning of September at the Admiral Perry Obedience Trial just to see where we were at. She surprised me by getting two legs her first weekend out showing. Her first leg that weekend was under Judge Louise Botko and the second (with a 2nd place in Novice B) under Judge Jim Ham. She got her 3rd leg a couple of weeks later at the Clarion Obediece Trial under judge Catherine Thompson with another 2nd place! I already had her entered at the Westmoreland Trials the weekend after that so we went anyway and she ended up with two more legs under Judges Jon and Carol Mett. Then we went to the Bullmastiff National Specialty in October and she got a sixth leg under Judge Catherine Thompson. That is 6 straight Qualifying scores in 6 shows for a new CD! Kirby was entered at our National Specialty and brought me to tears by qualifying in both obedience trials there. Under Judge Catherine Thompson she got a 4th place in Novice B and under Judge Rick Garvin she got a 2nd place! She then got her third leg and new CD at Youngstown All Breed's Trial the end of October under Judge Bob Squires. 2 Youngstown All Breed Training Club December 2011

3 With Bailey and Kirby both finishing their CD's, that earned both of them the Working Dog Versatility (Level 1) title and the Working Dog Performance- Obedience (Level 1) title through the American Bullmastiff Association! So both my girls have quite a few letters to add to the back of their names! They are now: Bailey: CH Linmor's Butterscotch Bomb CD BN RE CGC WDV1 WDP-O1 Kirby : Tryumphe SweepinUp At SteLor CD BN RE CGC WDV1 WDP-O1 I am so proud of my girls! I'm amazed to have finished 2 CD's in roughly a month. (With Bullmastiffs, even - go figure!) Not to leave Ralphie out, he did pass his CGC in early November! Thanks for letting me brag! At the YABTC Obedience Trial in October, brothers Yogi (JellyStone's Bear With Me - Janet Robertson) and Levi (Furever in Blue Jeans - Janet Klapac) both got their Rally Novice and Beginner Novice Titles. ~ Lori Baker Chris Gesing and his Collie "Party" won First Place in Beginner Novice A at the YABTC Training Club trials on both Saturday and Sunday with scores of 197 and Cosmic Dust dusted the track in Lansing on October 30 and got his TD. ~ Nancy Ventresco Thor, a Doberman owned by Janet Kamps, placed 1 st each day in his class at the Canfield Cluster Sully (Wild Mtn Thunderbird) has been busy! On November 5 & 6 he got to try out lure coursing. He loved it and got his first 2 legs for his CA title!! On November 20th he ran in another field trial. He was running in Open Derby where they dog has to find a bird and point it (judging stops at the point so the dog can flush and chase), not show gun shyness and show that he can work with his handler. This was the last trial of the fall season and he surprised the heck out of me!! He ran nicely, handled well for me and had so much fun! He found and pointed 4 quail that were judged, a 5th that he probably pointed but neither the judges nor I saw and he came running out of the woods chasing it and a 6th after time was called. This was the first time he found birds on his own, he pointed with style and held that point for a decent amount of time before he went in and flushed the bird. I was very happy with December 2011 Youngstown All Breed Training 3

4 his performance and loved seeing him run and having such a good time. I got some good tips from the judges when we were done and then they read off the placements. There were 12 dogs running in the open derby, Sully got 1st place and the absolute BEST part is that he doesn't have any training, this was all natural instinct!! This win gained him 2 more points toward his FC (Field Championship) so he has 3 total now. He can run in the derby stakes until he is 2 years old and after that I'm not sure what I will do with him as far as field training, it'll be a wait and see what happens. ~ Jamie Thompson Sharon Phillips owner/handler of Shilah (Arborview Moonshadow At Fallfire RN) finished her Rally Novice title at YABTC Oct 28th trail.
