1 The Newsletter of Youngstown All Breed Training Club Mahoning Ave. P.O. Box 397 North Jackson, Oh Lee Jackson Award The committee members for selecting this year s Lee Jackson award recipient were Janet Robertson, Rae Reinhart and Debbie Harper. The Lee Jackson Award is given each year in March to a dedicated and active member of Youngstown All Breed Training Club in Honor of Lee and Kay Jackson. Lee Jackson was one of the founding members of Youngstown All Breed Training Club. Before the club was established, several people met and trained their dogs at Pioneer Pavilion in Mill Creek Park. They later moved to the GF Hall on Logan Avenue in Youngstown to train. Lee spent many hours and much of his own money to keep this club active. He was known as Mr. Youngstown All Breed and served as president of YABTC for 18 years. Lee was also president of Mahoning Shenango Kennel Club. Lee was an AKC judge and one of 3 people in the nation to receive the distinguished 1977 Midwest D Ambris award. Unfortunately Lee passed away before he could receive the award. Both Lee and his wife Kay competed in obedience with Dachshunds and Belgian Sheepdogs. Kay also was Trial Secretary for many years. They had three dogs titled as Companion dogs. Lee had a good sense of humor and had one of his wire haired Dachshunds registered with the name of DAMMIT. In March of 1978, in honor of Lee Jackson, the first Lee Jackson award was given in tribute of him and has become a yearly tradition of YABTC. This award is given to an outstanding and dedicated person who has served our club in honor of Lee Jackson. This year s Lee Jackson Award Committee met and considered several worthy members. They came to a consensus on two members of this club who joined YABTC in May of One of these members is the club s Obedience Chairperson and has instructed many obedience and puppy classes. She is the trophy chair for the obedience and rally trials and always manages to come up with unique prizes and cute toys for the trials. She is also very active in showing their Airedales in rally, obedience and conformation. The second Lee Jackson Award recipient has been on the Building Committee since August 2003 and has been very active in building improvements. He has also been Training Director since February He also has instructed many obedience classes. He established the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month as run thru nights for YABTC having coordinated this with the other clubs in the area. He has stewarded at the obedience and rally trials even going so far as to take a mud bath in order to accomplish this. He has also done parking lot duty at the trials. He was instrumental in sustaining the conformation classes. They have also conducted obedience run throughs for many years as a team and work together to recruit obedience and rally instructors. Both of these members are always willing to give advice and tips on obedience and rally training to both new handlers and club members. Please join me in congratulating the 2011 Lee Jackson Award winners, Kim and Dale Burrier. 2 Brags Top Sibe in Country Mikki earns Advanced Rally Title I have a little brag about my boy Jo- Kar's Storm Warning "Raiden". In 2010 he was in the top 25 Siberian Husky's in agility! It's based on MACH points, which he doesn't have too many, but hopefully this year those points will start to accumulate. Jamie Thompson and Raiden Gus gets BN Leg Gus Justin Time RN, CGC Gus earned his first leg in Beginner Novice on Saturday March 12, 2011 at CABTC. Again, I have to thank everyone at YABTC who has helped us, my partners in crime Laura Lindberg, Eric Minteer, and Lori Wilkoff, who practiced with us faithfully every Wednesday, Sharon Phillips who worked with us in class to get us ready, and of course Judge Bonnie Hornfisher. Looking forward to finishing at our trial in April and adding another title! Joann Sesser YABTC earn 3 of 4 Placements at CABTC YABTC members took three placements at Cleveland.. Debbie Harper took second, Laura Lindberg took third, and Joann Sesser took fourth!!! We cleaned up in beginner novice!!! "Mikki" (Huntmere Always in Your Corner at MiMar, BN, RE, CGC) was entered & showed in Rally Advanced at the Akita Pre-National and National on 09/22/2010 in Gettysburg, PA. Mikki finished her Rally Advanced title in style with a 1st placement at the Pre-National and a 1st placement at the National. Thank you to Mikki's breeders, DeAnne & Paul Hunt, for entrusting this wonderful girl with us. ~Mary Mignogna 2 Youngstown All Breed Training Club April 2011
3 Sully s First Field Trial Wild Mtn Thunderbird "Sully" and I went to our first field trial March 13. This is a very unknown venue for me and Sully had no training at all for field work. We ran in what's called Amateur Walking Puppy and they judge on range (distance away from handler) and desire to hunt. There were 6 puppies entered and they run as a brace, so 2 dogs at a time. The judges ride horses and the handlers walk and if anybody wishes to go along and watch a brace they can either walk or ride horses. This was only the second time Sully has seen horses and I was amazed at how quickly he adapted to them. Out of the 6 puppies, Sully was the only one with no training, 4 of them have run in field trials before and 1 had not trialed, but had hunting experience and all the other one live with people that are VERY experienced in this venue. Sully got 3rd place!! It's not worth any points or anything, but it goes to show what a dog can do on pure instinct! I couldn't be happier with him. He did have an issue coming back to me at the very end of the run, but all of the other puppies did as well. I am going to enter a couple more field trials with him this spring, just doing the puppy stuff, see how he does and how I like it and go from there. Jamie Thompson Just a Flea Market Dog No Way! Gus was my "flea market" find! NO, I wasn't looking for another dog, (I have three besides him), but I now know I NEEDED him. So, out of a litter of eight puppies I chose Gus and took him home. Wow, a Pit Bull..What was I thinking? So, our journey began! The first thing I did was go to the Drawing by Sharon Phillips AKC website and try to find any information I could about this breed. (Now I find out you're supposed to do that before you acquire a dog!!!). Well, I don't remember exactly how I happened upon Mary Birch, but I ed her some questions I had, and to my surprise she immediately ed me back. Her first suggestion was that I enroll Gus in obedience training. So, since I knew Pet Smart offered classes I started there. Lori Wilkoff, who was our instructor, laughs now at how I approached her with my obvious question, "do you enroll Pit Bulls"? Thankfully, they did and another journey began! We completed two classes with Lori at PetSmart. She then suggested YABTC to further our training. Meanwhile, Lori hauled us to Burton, OH to a puppy match and encouraged me to test Gus for his CGC. He passed!! Shortly thereafter, she started again about testing him for Therapy Dog. We did.again he passed! He's now a proud member of Therapy Dog International, visiting at North Side Hospital and Liberty Health Care Nursing Home. I would have never had the courage to do any of this had it not been for Lori! She had more confidence in me and Gus then I did!!! I know our first few times at the club Gus was a little intimidating to most, but after getting to know him I think most people fell in love! We started in pre-novice and then I got an itch to try beginner rally. Mary Mignogna was so patient with us in her class, and such a big help. So, once again Lori talked me into entering Gus in Rally Novice at the I-X Center! She promised he'd do well, and he did. He came home with two qualifying scores and a second place. He received his title at the Erie Kennel Club show in January! Well, now I'm convinced that Gus can move forward, so we decided to try our skills at beginner obedience! With Sharon Phillips' help in class, we practiced diligently and entered the trials at CABTC held on March 12. Once again Gus made me proud and we left with not only a qualifying score but with fourth place! Next stop, YABTC trials, hopefully to title once again! Who would have thought that this "flea market" find would have brought so much joy and so many new friends into one person s life? ~ Joann Sesser April 2011 Youngstown All Breed Training 3

8 Here in this house... I will never know the loneliness I hear in the barks of the other dogs 'out there'. I can sleep soundly, assured that when I wake my world will not have changed. I will never know hunger, or the fear of not knowing if I'll eat. I will not shiver in the cold, or grow weary from the heat. I will feel the sun's heat, and the rain's coolness, and be allowed to smell all that can reach my nose. My fur will shine, and never be dirty or matted. Here in this house... There will be an effort to communicate with me on my level. I will be talked to and, even if I don't understand, I can enjoy the warmth of the words. I will be given a name so that I may know who I am among many. My name will be used in joy, and I will love the sound of it! Here in this house... I will never be a substitute for anything I am not. I will never be used to improve peoples' images of themselves. I will be loved because I am who I am, not someone's idea of who I should be. I will never suffer for someone's anger, impatience, or stupidity. I will be taught all the things I need to know to be loved by all. If I do not learn my lessons well, they will look to my teacher for blame. Here in this house... I can trust arms that hold, hands that touch... knowing that, no matter what they do, they do it for the good of me. If I am ill, I will be doctored. If scared, I will be calmed. If sad, I will be cheered. No matter what I look like, I will be considered beautiful and known to be of value. I will never be cast out because I am too old, too ill, too unruly, or not cute enough. My life is a responsibility, and not an afterthought. I will learn that humans can almost, sometimes, be as kind and as fair as dogs. Here in this house... I will belong. I will be home. _ Sent in to YABTC by Karin Tillitson 8 Youngstown All Breed Training Club April 2011
