2 Welfare From Karen Cessna and Tim Boger For those of you who didn't know we lost Vivian today at 12 years old. She was my heart-dog, and I am lost without her. Her back legs become paralyzed after being helped out of the car for, unbeknown to us, her last trip to grandma Zelda's. Vivian is the last of our original aussie crew we had for years That makes this so much harder... That is all I can say for now... I am just sick! Karen Reported from Elaine Shively Unfortunately we missed that James Grohl passed away in early August with his family at his side. There were no calling hours at the request of his family. James and his wife, Renie, are members of YABTC. Jim served as the Special Assistant to Senator Robert A. Taft of Ohio. He finished his career as Senior Vice President of the U.S. Savings and Loan League and as a Political Consultant in Washington, D.C. See more at: es-harper-groh/ Renie has assisted many times at our agility trials. She has a miniature dachshund. Renie told me about her husband at our last agility trial. 3 FALL RALLY & OBEDIENCE TRIAL: It's that time again! The Fall trial is October 24th Rally and October 25-26th Obedience. We need to organize and get ready to put on another great trial. If you are interested in any of the following Committees, please contact Mary or Lori and we will direct you in the right direction. We are in need of helpers for the following: Thursday ~ October 23 ~~ Cleaning of the club. Pizza and pop will be provided to those who help. You will also be able to set up your crate after the building is clean. Friday, Saturday & Sunday ~~ we need helpers with the following: Clean-up ~ garbage, bathroom, and general cleaning each day after the trial; main clean-up Sunday after the trial. Kitchen ~ donating money, water, food, and/or dessert and helping to work the kitchen any (or all) of the days (even a few hours is a huge help!!). Parking Raffle ~ donating, making, and working the table. Stewarding ~ Two Rally Trials on Friday; Three Obedience rings Saturday & Sunday. SHOUT OUT! Thanks to EVERYONE who stepped up and helped at our August Agility trial in Niles! You guys are all the BEST! We had some key players with other commitments leaving us short, but several of you (you know who you are) stepped up to the plate and hit the ball out of the park! I know I speak on behalf of the Trial Committee that we really appreciated all the extra help. Rae Reinhart, who did a wonderful job as Worker-Herder, said, "You know, we have some really special members at YABTC. Some come out and work EVERY class, all day. I couldn't agree more! You all are AWESOME! We had several comments, even from the judges, on the ring crews. Now that you know it is a good time (and you are paid in food or vendor wares) please consider coming again to our Oct. 3, 4, 5 trial at our building. We will once again need help to showcase our wonderful new facility to the agility community. We want to make our first impression a very good one! Sandy Irish YABTC Aug. 7 Agility Practice If you are a club member, you are welcome to practice agility on Sundays from 7:30 a.m. until noon. There is no fee and there are experienced handlers available to answer any questions you may have. Foundations class The Foundations class that was to be offered on Wednesdays at 8:10 starting October 8 has been changed to Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. starting September 17. Cris Connery will be teaching this class. Please contact JoAnn Fedyski to register. Her is dodgem2@neo.rr.com 2x2 Weaves Workshop We will be offering a 2x2 weave work shop. It will be held Saturday September 13, September 27 and October 11 at 3:45. The first two classes will be 1 ½ hours long, the last class will be 1 hour. This will allow time for both explanation and practice in the first two classes and more trouble shooting in the last one. Lotta Shafer and Terry Vickers will be teaching the workshop. Teaching the 2 x 2 weaves requires the dog to be familiar with shaping, so the students need to practice this before class. Learning the weaves also requires daily practice, not just practice in class so it is asked that the students be prepared to invest time outside of class. If you do not have a set of 2x2 s to practice with at home, Terry has offered to make 2x2 weave poles for the students if they are interested. Three sets of 2x2s would cost about $ The workshop is limited to 8 dog/handler teams. The three classes will be a total of 4 hours long and will cost $25 for members and $50 for non-members. Please contact JoAnn Fedyski to sign-up for this workshop. Her is dodgem2@neo.rr.com Also let JoAnn know if you are interested in the weave poles and she will let Terry know so he can have them ready for you the first day of class. Contacts and Weaves Workshop In one workshop you can learn how to improve your dog s contacts and weaves. Rae Reinhart will be teaching you how to perfect your contacts and Cindy Zeisler will be teaching you how to get independent weaves. The workshop will consist of 4 classes, each class lasting an hour and covering both topics. Classes will be held on Saturdays, Nov 15, Nov 22, Dec 6 and Dec 20. Two separate workshops will be offered. A beginner s workshop (for those students taking Agility 1 or Agility 2) and an Advanced workshop (for those students taking Agility 3 or Advanced). The Beginner workshop will start at 3:00 and the Advanced workshop will start at 4:15 Each workshop is limited to 12 dog/handler teams. The cost is $25 for members and $50 for non-members. Please contact JoAnn Fedyski to sign-up for this workshop. Her is dodgem2@neo.rr.com September 2014 Youngstown All Breed Training 7

8 Agility items for sale: - Marla Belzowski (legendhold@johnstown.net) I made these agility jumps about 20 years ago. They were built to the old Agility standard which has changed but still all the items are useable for training and with a little craftsmanship, the height of the jump pole cups can be changed with a power drill or screw driver. Jump positions set at 8, 12, 18, 24 (I think). They were built from the designs from Jane Simmons-Moake s book. These are not made of pressure treated lumber, so they are not completely rot proof but they are all painted or stained and almost all have been garage/trailer kept so they are in pretty good condition. They are a little lighter than a pressure treated lumber would be to handle. Since I have no time to work on agility with my dogs anymore, I m willing to part with these very nice jumps to someone who wants to use them for training or trials. Flag jump. This jump has holes at the top which are suitable to put a pole through to hang a flag from. 4 red and blue striped poles go with it. Stained uprights. - $25.00 (with PVC jump poles). Sold! Seesaw-teeter support stand. This is built to allow a pipe to be added attached to a teeter plank. The wings come off with wing nuts so the system can be stored in a smaller area. Stained sides, blue painted centerpiece. Additional paint is available to touch it up. - $20.00 Tire jump support: This red frame has two stained side pieces which come off with wing nuts. Made to Jane Simmon-Moake original designs. This frame can hold a regular real tire, PVC ones, or a newer break away one. Just add chains or bungees to the hooks on the frame. - $25.00 Brick faced solid wing jumps which I can cut down to make them easier to handle and more in accordance to current agility wing jump standards - these are very pretty jumps with poles -$ Lattice wing jump which is stained sides and white lattice mesh with poles - $ Three clean blue plastic drums. Two are suitable to hold the poles or could be a barrel jump if pole cup holders were attached to them. One plastic drum has already been converted to be the mouth for a collapsed chute but needs a new base support plywood piece or sand bags to keep it held down.. $20.00 each. (total of $60 for all of them) Collapsed-Chute fabric that has some holes that need work but is ok for training. - $35 (originally this was over $180 to have made) Misc weave poles and PVC poles for markers. I don t have a weave base, these were to stick in the ground. All will need cut down more for current standards: $15 for all of them. (total of about 12) Top for a pause table. Green felt coated plywood with wood stain sides. Great for show photos. Needs legs or a PVC support base. - $50 - Or take it all for $250 and I ll deliver them to you with the touch up paint I have left over - 8 Youngstown All Breed Training Club September 2014

9 German Shepherd in need of a home. Courtesy Post: A lady at work asked me to get out the word about a 2 year old spayed, female, black and red German Shepherd named Cabella, who needs a home very soon. Their housing development only allows for invisible-fences and this shepherd will not respect the collar. It is going across the shock boundary to go after the neighbor s terrier mix (who also is in an invisible fence and helps to instigate the problem). It s a bad situation for a very nice German Shepherd. She does not want take her to the shelter as she is afraid the dog will immediately be put down. She would give the dog to a good home, but I have advised her to not give it away free via the paper due to less than scrupulous people wanting a dog like this. She requests someone with a fenced yard who can keep her a primarily indoor dog as she s is currently used to being in the house. She will supply you with her dog food, treats, toys and all the comforts of home as she really wants the dog in a good home. Please contact Dawn Morton: MDMorton4@sbcglobal.net If you know of a GSD rescue in the area who has a foster home that can help with placement, please contact Marla Belzowski legendhold@johnstown.net Funny Pages A funny dog page to check out on the Web. It s a quick read and oh so true about how our dogs impact our lives in a crude, dog lover sort of way. *Warning for language and some adult-ish content, but it s funny!
