JULY 2008 Rio Salado Vizsla Club, Inc. Dakota took 2nd place in Amateur limited gundog and 4th place in Open limited gundog at the Greater Phoenix Brittany Club field trial in Flagstaff. There were 10 dogs in the Amateur and 14 in the Open. Proudly owned and trained by Mike George Mehagian's Perfect Teknique SH CGC was awarded Winner's Bitch at the Rio Salado Vizsla Club Specialty in Flagstaff on June 6, Teka is owned by Mike and Virginia Dhondt and shown by Mike Dhondt. This was Teka's second major. Many thanks to Ginny Maese. Owned by: Mike & Virginia Dhondt I am so proud of my 9 month old GSP puppy "Zeek" who won the Open Puppy Stake at the Greater Phoenix Brittany Club Field Trial on June 8th in Flagstaff. 2 Rio Salado Vizsla Club Newsletter Page 2 MEHAGIAN VIZSLAS Kazaryan s Ginger Mehagian MH recently was awarded several placements in Gun Dog and Amateur Gun Dog Competitions on the East Coast this spring. Her most outstanding placement was a First Place in an Open Gun Dog Stake at the Mason/Dixon German Shorthaired Pointer Trial. The stake had 25 dogs entered. Her recent wins have qualified her to compete at the Vizsla Club of America Nationals in November. The Nationals will be held in Southern Arizona in Sonoita. Mehagian s Desert Sun ll JH also qualified for entry in the VCA Trial by placing in a Derby Stake at the Southern Arizona German Shorthaired Pointer Trial which was held in Sonoita in March. Both dogs are owned by Marge Mehagian. Many thanks to Bill Dixon for training both these dogs and also to Al Lucas of Midland Virginia (Semper Fi Vizslas) for taking over Ginger and running her to her qualifying wins. Mehagian s N Threes a Charm (Dinah) has had several more wins towards her show Championship bringing the total number of points acquired to 11. She has both major wins. Champion Dinah finishes her championship with a 5 point major in Texas. That makes 4 majors! The recent socialization/ Obedience Classes which were held this spring produced several dogs which passed Tests in both Conformation and Obedience. Mehagian Vizslas is proud to report that CH Mehagian s Desert Jewel & Mehagian s Quiche A Loroka JH & Mehagian s N Threes A Charm each acquired 2 passes towards their Obedience Versatility. Recent wins have qualified them for their Conformation Versatility Certification. I would like to congratulate all the other Mehagian Vizslas acquired passes in these two venues. Mehagian's S'zlnRed Hot Tamale JH( "Mollie") has now earned the title BISS for going Best of Breed. Breeder Owner Marge Mehagian."Mollie" also was Best of Opposite Sex on Sunday at the Flagstaff Show. Mehagian's Perfect Teknique SH was awarded Winners bitch for a 3 point major. Breeder Marge Mehagian and owner Mike and Virginia Dhondt. "Teca" was owner handled to this win. Mehagian's Look'n for a Gambel ("Hunter") was awarded Winners Dog and Best of Winners, also for a 3 point major. Breeders Marge Mehagian and Donna Karis. Owners Lee and Sharon Birdsong. Thanks to these owners for entering their Mehagian Vizslas and also to Handler Alison Miller for showing Mollie and Hunter to their wins. Mehagian's N Threes A Charm "Dinah" received her 3rd major win in Durango bringing her total Show Championship Points to 11. Dinah was bred by Marge Mehagian and handled to this win by Alison Miller. Making his debut at the RSVC Specialty was Mehagian Hot Suzzlin Bruda Sam owned by Dave and Renee Newman and bred by Marge Mehagian. "Sam" went Reserve Winners Dog. Sam is just 10 months old and is out of Mehagian's Quiche A Loroka JH CGC and Ch. PLEASE CHECK THE CALENDAR ON THE WEBSITE FOR ALL THE SUMMER ACTIVITIES. THIS IS THE TIME TO GET YOUR DOGS OUT TO TRAIN FOR THE HUNTING EVENTS THAT ARE COMING UP. MAKE SURE YOU READ THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR ATTENDING THE TRAINING SESSIONS AND ORDER YOUR BIRDS IN A TIMELY MANNER. IF YOU ARE NEW AT THE TRAINING THERE WILL BE PEOPLE THERE WHO WILL BE VERY HAPPY TO HELP YOU GET STARTED. PLEASE DO NOT HESITATE TO CALL IF YOU HAVE ANY QUES- TIONS. Thanks to all for the generous donations and also to the successful bidders for helping to allow the silent auction to raise over $ for our club. Our special guest speaker from the Power Paws Assistance Dogs, Inc., was of great interest to all. We had good participation by the attendees and several questions were answered in regards to how the Therapy dogs are trained and how one can help. A demonstration by one of the Golden Retriever Assistance dogs showed how she was able to assist physically challenged companions with every day tasks. The dinner was wonderful and many awards were given out. We would like to give a special thanks to all of those that assisted with making this wonderful event a success. Also, our special thanks to Betty VanDenburgh for hosting the event at the Phoenix Country Club. Her generosity is greatly appreciated by all.

Marge RSVC 2008 Hunt Training Sessions The Rio Salado Vizsla Club (RSVC) offers hunt training for club members and their dogs throughout the year. Upcoming hunt training sessions and hunt tests are listed below. The schedule is subject to change due to bird availability and fire restrictions. Always check the RSVC web site for updated information and directions to the hunt training sites at Birds cost $5 each, with a limit of 4 birds per dog. Bird reservations will be limited due to bird availability and training session time constraints. Exact change or checks payable to RSVC are appreciated. Also, please remember that since the club pays for the birds that have been reserved, you are still responsible for reimbursing the club for the cost of your birds if you fail to attend the hunt training session. Brace Pairings: After arriving at the hunt training site, please check in with the Hunt Training Coordinator and pay for your birds. Brace sheets for the Senior/Master field and the Junior field will be available for you to sign up your dog(s) on a first come, first served basis. Please indicate the training level of your dog on the sheet (Junior, Senior, or Master). In order to run the fields efficiently, do not sign up for back-to-back braces. Field Trial Training Permit: The Arizona Game and Fish Department require permits for hunt training. There is no fee for the permit, which is good for one calendar year. An application for these permits can be printed from the club s web site at under Hunt Training. TRAINING TIMES START AT 8:00 A.M. You Must Be A Current Club Member to Participate! 7 Rio Salado Vizsla Club Newsletter Page 7 Field Training Volunteer Opportunities Please contact Donna Karis at dckaris@rsvc.net or if you are able to help at any of the upcoming field training sessions. Bird Reservations Bird Transport Camp Director FT Director Gunner/Bird Planter Money Registration Signs Supplies Take bird reservations (limiting reservations to the amount of dogs that can be run in a day), and check with Ron Horne that enough birds will be available on the requested date. Get bird boxes and deliver them to Ron Horn. Pick up the birds and transport them to the training site by 8 AM. Clean out the bird boxes and deliver them to the next bird transporter before the next training session. Make sure the training site is cleaned up at the end of the training session, remove all bags of trash, and dispose of the bird carcasses and live birds as needed. Facilitate the training session by monitoring the radios at base camp, notifying people when their brace is going to be run, getting people and their dogs to the line on time, and assisting the people in the field as needed. Gun for the Senior/Master fields and plant birds; Gunners are required to view the AKC Gunner Safety DVD before participating. Collect money for the birds at the field, bill anyone who reserved birds, but failed to attend the training session, and send the money to RSVC Treasurer Rita Mather. Sign people in at the training site, and set up dog braces for the Junior and the Senior/Master fields. Set up the RSVC orange Hunt Test signs directing people to the training site, and take the signs down at the end of the training session. Take all the training supplies up to the site (bird bags, the club s orange vests, first aid kit, ammunition for the gunners, fluorescent tape for marking birds, etc.) and give them to the next Hunt Training Coordinator at the end of the training session.

8 Rio Salado Vizsla Club Newsletter Page 8 RSVC HUNT TEST TRAINING FOR EVERYONE S SAFETY ---- Directions and Information Children must be under adult supervision at all times. Children and spectators are allowed in the field at the discretion of the Field Coordinator. Training for just honoring is only allowed when live ammunition is not in use. Everyone in the field must wear a blaze orange upper body garment that is visible from the front and back. Orange vests are available for loan at the site. Dogs and puppies may be off lead only when training. Otherwise, they must be leashed or kenneled. MISCELLANEOUS INFO --- IF YOU ARE RUNNING MORE THAN ONE DOG OR ARE RUNNING ONE DOG MORE THAN ONCE, plan on being at the training session for several hours. We will do our best to keep things running smoothly. The Training Coordinator has discretion as to the running order and brace pairings. Obviously, the more volunteers we have to organize, gun, plant, and train the dogs, the faster we will be able to run through the braces, and get everyone home at a reasonable hour. DIRECTIONS TO PAULDEN AREA From Phoenix, take I-17 north towards Flagstaff and drive about 62 miles. Take Exit #262 - AZ 69 North towards Prescott and drive about 21 miles. Turn right on Fain Rd and drive about 7 miles. Continue straight onto AZ 89Alt and drive about 6 miles. Turn right at AZ 89 and drive about 9 miles to Chino Valley. Stay on AZ 89 through Chino Valley and continue about 9 miles to Paulden. Go to Verde Ranch Road (about 3/10 miles past mile marker #338) and turn right. Grounds are located about 6 miles in, on the left side of the road. Look for the orange RSVC signs to direct you to the training site The trip from downtown Phoenix is about 118 miles, or a little over 2 hours driving time. RSVC members and their families are welcome to camp at the site, which is located in Prescott National Forest. Remember to bring water for you and your dog(s) and please remove all garbage. No facilities are available at the site. Always check the RSVC web site ( for updated information.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS AND CONTEST RULES *Photos must be submitted by a member of the RSVC who is the owner or breeder of the Vizsla(s) in the photograph. *Digital photographs should be at 1024x683 or better. *If you are unable to submit a digital photograph, please Submit an 8x10 photo. *Images must be in landscape (horizontal) composition. *Entries are limited to a maximum of 3 photos. *The photos cannot contain people, other breeds, or ribbons. *Photos must be submitted in the correct format, with entry information and correct payment to be considered. *By submitting your photo(s), you confirm that you own the copyrights to all the photographs you submit and that, to your knowledge, the photographs do not violate any existing copyright pursuant to statute, common law, or equity. If your photo is selected for the calendar, you may be required to sign a photo release. HOW TO ENTER All entries must include the following information: your name, address, phone number, address, the dog s name, and whether you are the owner or breeder. For submissions: your photo(s) with RSVC Calendar Contest in the subject line to Mike Dhondt - dhondt@gmail.com and your entry information in the body.
