6 Socialization and Obedience Classes Photos by Nate Tucker and Donna Coulter-Karis The third of three classes was held on Saturday, Sept 23rd at the Mehagian home. Each of the three classes attracted nearly 30 members and their Vizslas. It is so rewarding to have such a great turnout. Not only did the dogs socialize but so did the members. Many great friendships have been formed at these classes. Refreshments are served and members provided yummies each week. All dogs, male and female, puppies and adults are given the opportunity to run and play for about 1/2 hour. Then the dogs are leashed up and go to work. Basic obedience is taught by our experienced club members and dogs respond, as the Vizslas are known to do, with the willingness to please. This last class was especially fun since Donna Coulter-Karis brought her agility tunnel and all the dogs were given a chance to experience this challenge. Sandy Gorton helped members with older dogs learn what must be done to pass the Canine Good Citizen Test and Judge Janet Laman was able to present three members with a blue ribbon for their dogs who now can add the title Canine Good Citizen to their names. Following all the work, all the dogs were given an opportunity to jump in the swimming pool and what fun they had swimming and chasing tennis balls and cooling off. The owners were then treated to lunch courtesy of our club. If you haven't attended our classes, make sure you plan to attend the next series. Those dates will be announced, so watch for the flyer and also check our website calendar for all upcoming events at Special thanks to all who helped with these classes: Phyllis Bruce, Pam and Gerry Richards, Sandy Gorton, Donna Coulter-Karis, Janet Laman, Doreena Wiegert, John Mehagian and all the members who provided the snacks. Looking forward to seeing you next time. Viva Vizslas!! Submitted by Marge Mehagian The AKC Canine Good Citizen Program Started in 1989, the CGC Program is designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. The Canine Good Citizen Program is a two-part program that stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs. All dogs who pass the 10 step CGC test may receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club. As of January 1, 2013, Canine Good Citizen became an official AKC title that can appear on the title records of dogs registered or listed with AKC. For more information, see training/canine_good_citizen/index.cfm. Congratulations to our new CGC titleholders, Willow (Harmony Willowy Summer Sorrell An Avenger, owned my Missy Gregory), Holly (Korona Sedona Sunrise, owned by Carolyn Quinlan) and Ava (Sleepy Hollow's Rusted Horn, owned by Tracey Sosna). It was obvious that there was a lot of work put into getting the pups ready, because they passed with flying colors. Kudos for all your hard work. Also, thank you Sandy Gordon for your help and also thanks to Nathan Tucker for providing our "distraction". Submitted by Janet Laman, RSVC CGC Coordinator 6

17 Purebred Dogs Not Always at Higher Risk For Genetic Disorders If you think your mixed-breed pup is naturally hardier than the neighbor s purebred, you may want to think again. A new study by researchers at the University of California, Davis, indicates that mixed breeds don t necessarily have an advantage when it comes to inherited canine disorders. Findings of the new study, available online in the June issue of the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, are of particular interest because dogs are second only to humans in the number of identified genetic disorders that affect them. The prevalence of genetic disorders among purebred and mixed-breed dogs depends on the specific condition, according to the study. The results provide a better understanding of the prevalence and source of such disorders, and could advance efforts to prevent and treat genetic ailments in both dogs and humans. Overall, the study showed that the prevalence of these genetic disorders among purebred and mixed-breed dogs depends on the specific condition, said animal physiologist Anita Oberbauer, professor and chair of the Department of Animal Science at UC Davis and lead author of the study. She noted, for example, that elbow dysplasia and dilated cardiomyopathy, a heart condition, appeared more frequently among purebred dogs. But rupture of the cranial cruciate ligament in the knee was more common in mixed breeds. Results from this study give us insight into how dog breeding practices might be modified to reduce the prevalence of certain genetic disorders, Oberbauer said. The researchers evaluated records for more than 90,000 purebred and mixed-breed dogs that were examined at UC Davis veterinary medical teaching hospital between 1995 and From this group, 27,254 dogs were identified as having one or more of 24 genetic disorders, including various types of cancers, heart diseases, endocrine-system ailments and orthopedic problems, as well as allergies, bloat, cataracts, epilepsy, an eye lens problem and a liver condition. The 24 disorders were selected for the study because they can be diagnosed accurately, are highly prevalent in the overall dog population and are debilitating to the extent that owners would seek veterinary care for the animal. In addition, the selected disorders represent a variety of different locations and physiologic systems in the dog s body. The researchers found that the prevalence of 13 of the 24 genetic disorders was approximately the same in purebred dogs as in their mixed-breed counterparts. Ten were found more frequently among purebred dogs, and one such disorder was more common in mixed-breeds. The data also indicated that the more recently derived breeds or those breeds that shared a similar lineage were more susceptible to certain inherited disorders. For example, four of the top five breeds affected with elbow dysplasia were the Bernese mountain dog, Newfoundland, mastiff and Rottweiler all from the mastiff-like lineage. This suggests that these breeds share gene mutations for elbow dysplasia because they were descended from a common ancestor. In contrast, disorders that occurred equally among purebred and mixed-breed dogs appeared to represent ancient gene mutations that had become widely spread throughout the dog population. Such disorders included hip dysplasia, all of the tumor-causing cancers and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a heart condition. The study was support by the Department of Animal Science, the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, and the California Agricultural Experiment Station at UC Davis. Other members of the research team: Graduate student Thomas Bellumori, Professor Thomas Famula, and staff research assistant Janelle Belanger, all of the Department of Animal Science in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences; and Professor Danika Bannasch of the Department of Population, Health and Reproduction in the School of Veterinary Medicine. 18 Arizona Vizsla Rescue The RSVC does not currently have any Vizslas in rescue. If you are interested in adopting a Vizsla/Vizsla mix in the future, please contact Sandy Gorton at: (480) or at azvizslarescue@gmail.com. Print and fill out a Rescue Application by going to and clicking on Vizsla Rescue under Club Info. Vienna We are the proud parents of Vienna, the 5 month old Vizsla rescue who we adopted from RSVC on August 20, Just a short update as to how she is doing since she came to live with us 6 weeks ago. Vienna is every inch a Lady and lives up to her name of one of the most beautiful cities in Europe; Vienna, Austria. She is sweet, gentle, loving, house trained and a chow hound. She has gained weight in the last few months and is now up to 38 lbs at 6.5 months. Our 1.5 year old female Vizsla Ginger loves Vienna. They play all day long, starting as early as 5AM, rolling, romping and digging up potted plants in the back yard. Ginger s life style has certainly changed to a very active one full of play and companionship. Vienna is in training classes at Petsmart, and she learns quickly. We can t thank the RSVC enough and specifically Missy and her family for the great fostering care they gave Vienna and allowing her to adopt us. Vienna was very excited to see Missy and her family at the recent socialization classes at Marge s. Submitted by Tom Lundquist Copper We currently have a pure bred Vizsla named Copper in rescue. He is a one and a half year old neutered male. He is great with kids and other dogs, but his family has no time for him and is planning on having more children. He is very "birdy" and his current owners would love for him to go to a home that will hunt with him, but this is not a requirement. Please complete our adoption application and return it to us. You can find it at: 20Checklist.pdf Questions? Please call Sandy at: (480) or Missy at (480) Submitted by Missy Gregory, RSVC Rescue Coordinator 18

20 The AKC Therapy Dog Program The purpose of the AKC Therapy Dog Program is to recognize AKC dogs and their owners who have given their time and helped people by volunteering as a therapy dog and owner team. The program awards an official AKC title to dogs who have worked to improve the lives of the people they have visited. The AKC Therapy Dog title (THD) can be earned by dogs who have been certified by AKC recognized therapy dog organizations and have performed 50 or more community visits. The AKC does not certify therapy dogs; the certification and training is done by qualified therapy dog organizations. Earning an AKC Therapy Dog title builds on the skills taught in the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy and Canine Good Citizen programs which creates a sound and friendly temperament needed by a successful therapy dog. What is a Therapy Dog? From working with a child who is learning to read to visiting a senior in assisted living, therapy dogs and their owners work together as a team to improve the lives of other people. Therapy dogs are not service dogs. Service dogs are dogs who are specially trained to perform specific tasks to help a person who has a disability. An example of a service dog is a dog who guides an owner who is blind, or a dog who assists someone who has a physical disability. Service dogs stay with their person and have special access privileges in public places such as on planes, restaurants, etc. Therapy dogs who will be earning the AKC Therapy Dog title, do not have the same special access as service dogs. How does my dog earn the title? To earn the AKC Therapy Dog title, you and your dog must meet the following criteria: Your dog must be certified and/or registered by an AKC recognized therapy dog organization. You and your dog must perform a minimum of 50 visits. Your dog must be registered or listed with AKC. Since the 1980 s, there have been significant advances in the field of animal assisted therapy and the use of therapy dogs. Organized therapy dog groups provide educational material to volunteers, screen both volunteers and dogs, and provide liability insurance for when the dog and handler are volunteering in a therapy setting. The following certification organizations are recognized by the AKC in Arizona. A dog must be certified by one of these organizations to be eligible to receive the AKC Therapy Dog title. Humane Society of Southern Arizona Pet VIP Program (southern AZ) Pets on Wheels of Scottsdale, Inc. (AZ) If your dog meets the criteria and you would like to apply for an AKC Therapy Dog title, submit a $20 fee and complete the application available on the AKC web site at: images.akc.org/pdf/therapy_dog/title_application.pdf From For more information on Pets on Wheels of Scottsdale, please visit their web site at Pets on Wheels is a pet visitation therapy program that serves over 22 health care centers in Scottsdale, AZ. The program is all-volunteer except for a part time paid Volunteer Coordinator position, and is not associated with any other pet therapy program. 20
