2 RSVC Socialization and Obedience Classes The Rio Salado Vizsla Club held a series of Socialization and Obedience classes in January and April. These classes provide RSVC members with the opportunity to work with their dogs for the VCA Conformation and Obedience tests and for the AKC Canine Good Citizen test. Dogs and their owners were divided into either puppy or adult groups. Puppy classes worked on basic obedience skills (walking nicely on a leash, sits, downs, and coming when called) and playing nicely. The puppies were also introduced to tunnels and jumps to build confidence and have fun. The adult classes worked on more advanced obedience skills, such as heeling on lead, standing for exam, and long sits and downs. At the end of class, dogs were permitted to play off lead while their owners had the opportunity to chat and eat goodies donated by RSVC members. On the last day of classes, the dogs were treated to an exciting POOL PARTY! Thanks to everyone who attended class, donated refreshments, took photographs, or helped with the classes: Karen and Dan Burchfield, LindaJean Egbert, Linda Fox, Missy and Brian Gregory, Donna and John Karis, Marian Kirkpatrick, Janet Laman, John and Marge Mehagian, Marla Molvin, Renee and Dave Newman, Pam Richards, Robert Rodriguez, Jodi Rosenblatt, and Doreena and Jerry Wiegert. 5 RSVC Spring Field Training Sessionss Spring Hunt Training was great!! We had a record number of Novice puppies turn out. It was great to see everyone so interested in training their new puppies. I would like to thank everyone for attending and thanks to everyone who helped make the training possible. I hope to see everyone at the Summer training. We are still looking for a training area available in May and June. If we cannot find one, we will be at Pine Hill in July. I will have flyers with dates at the Awards Banquet. Thanks again to everyone who helped and a special thanks to Jim DeWoody. We couldn't do the training without him. Submitted by Pam Edwards, RSVC Hunt Training Coordinator Forget the Treadmill. 7 Kayla s Story Well it all started when Rick came home Tuesday at 11:00 AM to prepare for the Direct TV install. He was on the Bluetooth with me and we were arguing about some aspect of the changeover and the conversation became loud as he was letting the girls outside to potty and ended up slamming the door. He began to clean up and move furniture around as we continued to talk and eventually went to let the girls back inside, not paying attention to who was accounted for and returned to his preparations. Around 1 PM, the doorbell rang and he went to see that the installer had arrived so he quickly rounded up the girls and put them into kennels and backrooms. It was then he began to realize that Kayla was not around, so as we talked, he was telling me where he had checked and didn t find her yet. The installer got impatient so Rick went outside to explain the situation and see if he could start his install on Tim s house (he was also getting Direct TV set up). The guy said OK and Rick got the house opened up so he could start, then Rick went back to rechecking anywhere else he could think Kayla had gotten to. Meanwhile I was starting to head home to help look for her. As soon as I got home, I rechecked each room and hiding place and confirmed she was gone. I then went driving the neighborhood and approached a Qwest installer down the street and he said he had seen a dog fitting her description at the corner, down from the house about 20 minutes earlier, in the middle of the street spinning around like she was uncertain where to go. I was searching everywhere with the help of Mary Carson who Rick had called earlier asking for any help she could offer. While I was out driving the streets Rick went online and registered the loss with LOSTMYDOGGIE.COM and paid the $140 fee to have them send out alerts to nearby shelters and vet offices, as well as making rotary calls to 250 of our neighbors of the lost dog. They also post at Facebook and Twitter. He also began to put together a lost dog poster for us to put up all over the neighborhood. While I was still in the neighborhood, I got a call from a man two streets over who had gotten a call and offered to watch out for her. About this time Rick had sent out a distress message to Marge Mehagian in hopes the Vizsla club had resources that could come into play. It later turned out that that message to Marge plus the posting at LOSTMYDOGGIE.COM were the most instrumental in getting her back and keeping our hopes up in finding her. Rick also went online to the AZ Humane Society website to see what they posted to help find lost dogs. They had a few more lost dog website resources listed and he went to each of them and posted her on Pets911 as well as a posting at Craigslist. Rick had contacted Marilyn Bennet with PFOC who offered to run by the county pound to see if she had already been picked up. During the evening while I was still out driving the neighborhood, Rick got on the phone with the Home Again people and learned that Kayla s chip was never registered with them years back when we brought her to a CABRA clinic. He paid the $16.95 right then and even went through the rest of the registered names on their records. He learned that they can also send out alerts much like the other websites do if you buy their premium service. Otherwise they just list the dog with owner information if the chip is scanned by a shelter or pound. I got home after 10 PM and was exhausted so at the recommendation of the AZ Humane Society website, we left the front porch light on with the gate open and a blanket and water bowl next to the front door in case she found her way home on her own. The next morning Rick got the telephone numbers for both county and state highway department dead animal pick up. I learned that the county will scan any animals they pick up but the state does not, stating they didn t have the equipment. Both department personnel I spoke with were very compassionate and suggested the best times to call again. As depressing as that may sound, in this situation it may be better to know for certain if she had 7

8 been hit and picked up than to never find her and never know for sure. Each morning Rick drove the one mile perimeter of our neighborhood searching the roadside for her. He also drove the alleyways between streets in the neighborhood, end to end, looking where he could see into backyards. While Rick was driving the streets again Wednesday morning, I was at the Humane society on Hatcher then over to the dog pound in Mesa to see if she was either place. Then we went to the Phoenix pound with no luck. Now another long night worrying about her and not knowing if she was safe or suffering alone somewhere. The porch light on and gate open with her blanket and water bowl by the front door. Thursday AM, Rick went through the same ritual, calling the two dead animal pick up departments for a report and then driving the perimeter of the neighborhood and alleyways. Then we both went to work, having done all we could do. Rick came by my work at lunch and we both ran over to the 27 th Ave pound to check their kennels one more time. At this time, Marian Kirkpatrick had offered to do anything to help and we asked her to run by the Mesa pound and look for Kayla there. While Rick and I were in the third or fourth building, my cell phone rang and I had to step out of the noisy building to take the call. The caller was Anita Talbott and she said that she has a red dog trapped in an area by her and maybe it was our Kayla? So Rick and I ran to the car and jumped in all the while talking to Anita asking her the location and to please, please keep her in sight. It seemed we hit every light on Buckeye between 27th and 67th Avenues until we turned north and looked for the community Anita had directed us to. It turned out to be a gated, retirement community just two or three streets south of our neighborhood BUT across the very busy 67th Avenue, especially at the hour we believe Kayla may have crossed it. While enroute, we had told the lady to say our son s name to Kayla as she used to sleep in his room before he moved out. The woman did just that and said Kayla suddenly stopped trying to run and hide and instead stopped and turned toward her, looking for her Steven. This worked to help her stay put while we drove into the community and up to the house Anita had given us. When we got out of the car and looked to where Anita said she had last seen Kayla, we saw her back behind some rubble alongside a fence. She saw us and picked up her head and when Rick spoke to her and said, Where s Steven she immediately knew it was us and ran towards us where we all embraced, crying all together in joy and relief. Anita said she wished she had a camera as the reunion brought tears to her eyes, too. When we got her home, she got a wonderful greeting for the rest of the girls and shortly afterwards we made a 5 PM vet appointment and gave her a bath. Interestingly, as Rick prepared the bath for Kayla and asked me to bring her to him, I hadn t heard him and he opened the bathroom door to get her himself and she was actually waiting outside the door and came in by herself and stepped into the tub on her own as if to say, Please clean me up. It was amazing. After the vet appointment we went to bed and crashed and had Kayla in bed with us to keep close to her as she was breathing funny. She was OK in the AM and readily ate her breakfast. That afternoon we went back over to see Anita and thank her with a gift card. We had brought Kayla with us, who started to tremble as we drove into the community. We asked Anita to tell us how she had learned of our lost dog and she explained that she had gotten a call from the website and had written the number down only to call it when she first saw Kayla and got a disconnected message. Later the next day when she saw her again, she tried the number and realized she had gotten a digit wrong so this time it went through to us as we were at the local pound. We thank God and realize that our getting Kayla back was nothing short of a miracle. We have so many people to thank within the Vizsla community, family and friends as well as strangers who all helped in many ways. Thank you all so much for helping us get our Kayla back home. 17 Although my real name is Mehagian s Winner Take All NA NAJ NJP NAP, everyone calls me Styx. Born in Phoenix, I transferred to Woodstock, IL (where the movie Groundhog Day was filmed) to be with my best buddy Cheryl and my other friends Shadow, Kelly, Zippy, Dillon and special pal, the late Kedzie. My first experience in Chicago was being greeted by the nastiest storm when we landed. There was so much lightning and thunder and Cheryl held me tight. I can t say I m really a fan of the snow and cold weather either, brrrrr, but it teaches one to raise his leg. I met Cheryl when she came out to see me and my brothers and sisters. I liked her a whole bunch right off the start. Anytime she poked her head in, I jumped up to get her attention. When she asked, who wants to go and take a plane ride? I jumped at the chance. The rest is history. As soon as I got home I started training in agility. We did foundation classes and obedience classes. Cheryl said our aim was to be ready for agility at the nationals in Wisconsin We started out in Canine Performance Events (CPE) trials to get used to running events and to proof our skills and then transferred over to AKC to get used to that venue. By the time we went to nationals, I had already earned my NA and NAJ titles and me and Cheryl, well, we were on top of our game together. At nationals I won both my classes in agility, Novice Agility Preferred 20 and Novice Jumpers Preferred 20. Currently I am competing in Open classes in AKC. My tail never stops wagging. I love meeting others and mom says I m a terrific ambassador of the breed. When Cheryl s mom was really ill, we d go over and visit at the nursing home and soon, everyone was asking for me to come and visit them. I had 12 patients to see and then they invited me to visit the patients in the Alzheimer s ward. I still go over to the nursing home every week to visit. Cheryl s mom (Grandma) was proud of me and we hung all my ribbons up on her door. She d tell us, I want another blue ribbon, and I did. I m quick and accurate sometimes 25 seconds under course time. Cheryl said we have to do more homework and work hard to finish our other titles and work on our MACH. That s our goal and hopefully, we ll work on birds during the summer. Mom wants to thank Marge Mehagian and Rita Mather for allowing me to go to Chicago to live. Sometimes when it s really cold out I wonder what Marge was thinking sending this desert puppy to Chicago, but when Cheryl hugs and kisses me, then it s clear what Marge was thinking, cause mom is the best. I love Chicago. Licks and slurps Grandma Marge I ll make you proud of me. 20 In Memoriam UCI Intl Ehren Ch Bronze Mistletoe My Story Catcher CGC CD MH Rest in Peace, Mistletoe, who passed during Thanksgiving weekend 2010, at the ripe age of 15 ½ years old. Her mind was alert, but she couldn t walk anymore, and I could not lift her 70 pounds - she was a very big bitch all her life. When I got her, I asked RSVC member and PFOC Life Member Margaret Carter, 92 and still living in San Diego, to puppy test her. She came over when I got her from the airport at 3 months old, and said, How much do you weigh? Silly, 160. How much does she weight? 15 pounds. You win. In puppy testing, she was all ones, maybe a two. She put Don Humes down on his can and pulled him about 5 ft. I was shooting, and she started running after the bird, before days of e-collars, before digital cameras, and put all his??? pounds on the ground. Also a friend had Margaret, me, and I forget his name and he had the pool, 3 times a week, 3 hours in the AM, she drove from diving board, length of pool underwater, chasing balls. Before Marge Mehagian was president, in the 80 s we had Mary Lee Sloan retire here due to Bill Gibbons. Mary Lee connected me with David Lee from Illinois, the owner and the dog is in the Hall of Fame. So I got Mistletoe. Mary Lee lived at Cordes Junction, President of Prescott Kennel Club, etc, background why we did so much at Cordes and why AZ Pointing Dog Club same thing. Submitted by Mary Carson Arizona Vizsla Rescue Two Vizslas are currently in Rescue. We need immediate foster homes for them until permanent homes can be found. Both dogs have been altered, a 6.5 year old male and a 1.5 year old female. If you can help Rescue with these two red orphans, please contact Marla Molvin at mmert1@cox.net or (602) or Marge Mehagian at (602)
