Occasionally, the dogs and puppies had the opportunity to try out tunnels and jumps. Many thanks to Marge and John Mehagian for holding the classes at their home and providing drinks, and to Phyllis Bruce for helping sign in participants. Thanks also to everyone who brought refreshments: Christine Escobar, Linda Fox, Eleni Kinney, Marian Kirkpatrick, Janet Laman, Mary Levine, Kim Meloche, Teri O Connor, Pam Richards, Ron Risko, and Diana and Mark Williams. 13 RSVC Microchip Clinic What would you do if your pet got lost? The Rio Salado Vizsla Club held its first microchipping clinic as a service to its members on Saturday, January 28, 2012 during the last Socialization and Obedience Class at the home of the Mehagians. Many thanks to Missy Gregory for helping to organize everyone on the day of the clinic, to Ellie Watson, who administered the microchips, to Jodi Rosenblatt, who researched the feasibility of having our club offer this service to our members, and to Marge Mehagian, who ordered the supplies on behalf of the club. The event was overwhelmingly successful as 13 members dogs were microchipped and will be held again. If you had your dog microchipped at this event, please make sure to enroll your dog in the program by submitting the appropriate paperwork and keeping your contact information up-to-date. Submitted by Donna Coulter-Karis American Kennel Club News Article AKC Companion Animal Recovery Introduces Revolutionary Microchip New chip to provide more affordable alternative for veterinarians and animal shelters Raleigh, NC In its continuing effort to improve the pet recovery process in America, the American Kennel Club's Companion Animal Recovery (AKC CAR) announced that it is introducing a revolutionary new microchip identification system to the market. The new AKC Companion Animal Recovery ID System microchip is technologically superior and more affordable than microchips currently on the market. AKC CAR and Electronic ID Devices, Ltd. (EID) have entered a distribution agreement, where AKC CAR has become the exclusive distributor of TROVAN microchips in the United States companion animal market. TROVAN transponders have been in production and used in a variety of applications since 1991, using the most modern operational and manufacturing technologies available. The new AKC Companion Animal Recovery ID System microchips comply with the installed reader base used for identifying lost microchipped animals in most shelters throughout the United States. Additionally, the AKC CAR microchip is smaller than other microchips. This new system will provide veterinarians, animal shelters, breeders and pet owners an alternative to the more expensive microchips currently being offered in the market, said Dr. Carmen Battaglia, President and CEO of AKC CAR. Our commitment is to increase the number of pets microchipped and enrolled in our recovery service in order to increase the number of lost pets that we recover. Through a newly-designed delivery system, the AKC CAR microchip is implanted between the shoulder blades just below the skin of the pet. The two-piece, patented delivery system places the microchip in the pet while the lancet is simply retracted, leaving the chip in the precise location intended. Other applicators push the microchip out of a needle into the skin creating a risk of breakage and imprecise placement. Additionally, the AKC CAR microchip is smaller than other microchips and less likely to migrate. There are many reasons to support the AKC Companion Animal Recovery ID System. AKC CAR: Is the nation s largest not-for-profit recovery service Provides a live operator, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year Has enrolled over 3.5 million animals and recovered over 320,000 Has a long-term commitment to the pets in the database Funds veterinary student scholarships, search and rescue teams, and disaster relief Continues to offer free updates to the pet s record Upon enrollment, every pet owner receives a FREE metal collar tag containing the pet s microchip number and the AKC CAR recovery hotline ( ). The tag is a critical part of the recovery process, particularly if the pet is found by an ordinary citizen without a microchip scanner. AKC CAR has worked diligently to identify and distribute a superior microchipping system, continued Dr. Battaglia. We are confident that this new microchip will lead to even more pet recoveries. For more information on the AKC Companion Animal Recovery ID System, visit or call

Overcoming various physical challenges including a cleft palette, diminutive size and visual impairment, Timmy just climbed his second major mountain to the very top! Normally he s hesitant to jump out of the back seat, but he faced his fears and scrambled over the boulders going up and coming down. We are so proud of his progress. A very loving little boy, we never worry about him being off lead. He never strays more than a few feet from us. He loves being outside (thanks to big brother Toby) and never misses a chance to go on a hike. Our forever puppy is just surpassing our expectations. At one year old and a few months, he s reached his max weight of about 30 lbs and is extremely healthy. We love you little Timmy and are so proud to watch you grow! Katie and her mom (a doctor in Tucson) adopted him on November 23, On December 5 th they sent us photos with his new family. He was shivering with the colder weather so he wears a sweater and sleeps by the fire in the evenings. He is doing great at his new home and loves playing with the other Vizsla, Amber. Rusty is gaining weight and doing well. There is another adult male Vizsla in rescue named Winston who is approximately one year old. Although wild and untrained, he is as sweet as pie! He has a facial deformity, either from an injury or birth defect. He also has a healed scar on his back leg just below the hock as if someone tied him with a rope and let it grow into his leg. He is already vaccinated with his 4-1 and rabies. He was also groomed, had a tick bath and was fully de-ticked. Thanks to everyone who has contributed to the care of these Vizsla rescues. 17 In Memoriam Mehagian s Prince of Denmark May 26, January 5, 2012 Toby, aka Mehagian s Prince of Denmark, died after a brief illness on January 5. Our 2.5 year old Toby loved everyone and everything! With a personality as big as his floppy ears, Toby would charm the pants off of anyone who saw him. Toby loved being outdoors more than anything and couldn t wait to run at State Trust Land or run along side us as we trained for marathons. He loved his little brother Timmy and the two only stopped playing when we made them eat their dinner. He worked hard at obedience and had just earned his first passes towards his VC Conformation and Obedience titles. While we know he was a handsome boy, his best quality was getting excited when we walked through the door after a long day at work. We miss you Toby and you will always be our first little baby boy.
