7 RSVC Socialization and Obedience Classes The Rio Salado Vizsla Club held Socialization and Obedience classes on Saturday mornings in January-February and April-May this year. About 30 dogs and 40 to 50 people showed up to participate. Thanks to everyone who provided refreshments, including Phyllis Bruce, Tom Lundquist, Chris Seaver, Ron Risko, Eleni and Chad Kinney, and Jenny Campanano. Our next classes will be held in the Fall. The dates are yet to be determined, so consult the website calendar frequently for updates to the RSVC Schedule. For those of you who attended, try to practice with your dogs every day. If you wish to do more formal classes, Petsmart offers them weekly. Every bit of instruction will help your dog to continue to learn. For those who wish to show their dogs, Ginny Maese offers classes and will help you get your dog ready to show when the time is right. More information and a class schedule can be found at We have many dates being offered for Hunt Training. Again, please consult the RSVC website for information and locations. All of these events are a great way to not only work with your dog, but to meet other VIZSLA owners. If you have questions, do not hesitate to contact Pam Edwards, Donna Coulter- Karis, or Jim DeWoody. Submitted by Marge Mehagian 2012 Versatility Test Results Versatility tests in Conformation and Obedience were held at the end of the Socialization and Obedience classes in January and May of this year. 8 2012 RSVC Awards Banquet Photos by Mike Dhondt A very successful Awards Banquet was held at the Phoenix Country Club on April 21st. More than fifty members attended and bid on the Silent Auction items during cocktail hour. The auction raised more than $ for our club. The Club donated some of the income to the Valley Fever Research Fund and also to Gabriel's Angels. A delicious dinner was served and everyone had a lovely evening. Many thanks to Betty VanDenburgh for allowing us to have our annual event at the Phoenix Country Club. The following Members who attended were recognized for their service to the club over the past year: Donna Coulter-Karis Jim DeWoody Mike and Virginia Dhondt Pam & Gerry Edwards LindaJean Egbert Linda Fox Sandra Gorton Missy Gregory Marian Kirkpatrick Janet Laman Rick and Debbie Maher Rita Mather Vicki May Bob Miller and Bob Miller Jr. Marla Molvin, Amy Pongratz Pam Richards Doreena Wiegert Others who were unable to attend were also recognized: Phyllis Bruce, Jodi Rosenblatt, Velma Tucker, Ellie Watson, and Andy Welch. Thanks to all our great members who support our club and make all our events such a great success. Submitted by Marge Mehagian, President RSVC The Valley Fever Center for Excellence, located at the University of Arizona in Tucson, was established to address the problems caused by the fungus, Coccidioides, the cause of coccidioidomycosis (Valley Fever). Two-thirds of all infections in the United States occur in Arizona, mostly in the urban areas surrounding Phoenix and Tucson. The Center s mission is to mobilize resources for the eradication of Valley Fever (Coccidioidomycosis) through: 1) the development of public awareness and education about Valley Fever, 2) the promotion of high quality care for patients with Valley Fever, and 3) the pursuit and encouragement of research into all aspects of Coccidioides sp. and the diseases that it causes. The center s existence depends upon philanthropic, tax-deductable donations. Gabriel's Angels is the only program in Arizona that delivers healing pet therapy to abused, neglected and at-risk children. Our short term goal is to instill in children an overall emotional sense of well-being, safety and happiness. Long term aspiration is to help children learn core social skills that will prevent them from continuing the cycle of violence as adults. Presently we provide pet therapy services to over 115 agencies and serve 13,000 children annually through nearly 155 Pet Therapy Teams. Our services are provided free of charge to the agency and the children. Gabriel's Angels pet therapy services are provided by volunteer Pet Therapy Teams, usually consisting of a companion dog and owner. Teams visit each participating agency on a consistent schedule to build trust, empathy and respect in the children. Gabriel s Angels future vision is to add 170 Pet Therapy Teams reaching an additional 10,000 children in Arizona. The cost to support one therapy team is $2,500 annually. 8

11 In April, we had our Annual Awards Banquet and Silent Auction. This year we raised over $1800 for Gabriel's angels and also the Canine Valley Fever Research Foundation. There were over 50 baskets to bid on ranging from several hunt packages, a puppy starter vet kit, Arizona Dog Sports gift certificate, professional dog handling package as well as goodies for us humans. Many thanks to those who contributed, including: Squaw Peak Animal Hospital, Phoenix Fishing Supply, Phoenix City Grill, Arizona Dog Sports, Tony Marquez, Pam Lambie as well as generous cash donations from John VanDenburg, Betty VanDenburg, Betsy Long, Sherry Flamard and Marge Mehagian. Of course this wasn't possible without the help of Marge and John Mehagian, Marian and Jim Kirkpatrick and Jodi Rosenblatt and everyone who generously donated all those wonderful items and baskets. Most importantly, thank you ALL who bid on the items. We couldn't have made such a generous donation without your help. Submitted by Janet Laman 2012 RSVC Silent Auction NEW Canine Good Citizens! On a bright and beautiful May 2nd, 2012, the Rio Salado Vizsla Club held a Canine Good Citizen Test. Marian Kirkpatrick and Jodi Rosenblatt were the judges. Submitted by Jodi Rosenblatt Spring and Summer Hunt Training We had another successful spring and summer hunt training sessions, although we were not able to have as many sessions in the summer as planned due to forest closures. However, many people did attend the ones we were able to hold. Jim DeWoody took on additional sessions during the summer training, making them two day events that were very successful. We will continue these two day sessions next year. We all owe many thanks to Jim DeWoody who once again selflessly trained many dogs and helped numerous handlers. Jim always makes sure everyone else gets to work with their dogs before he takes the time to work with his own dogs. His time and efforts are greatly appreciated. Thanks also to Jerry Edwards and Jim Kirkpatrick who are always there to plant birds and gun. Future sessions will depend more on the members to help so please make sure you come ready to learn and work. Submitted by Pam Edwards, Hunt Training Coordinator 11

16 John and I had 3 Vizslas, one was Anci Kopo (Kopo) and she was a awesome hunter. But when she was very young we noticed she acted strangely sometimes (star gazing). We took her to a vet and he said she had grand mal seizures. I mentioned it at one of the hunt trials and it was strongly suggested that we put her down. We couldn't, we dearly loved her. So we kept her up on all of her shots and had her spayed. In the end, we had to put her down. After 7 1/2 years the seizures progressively got much worse and because we loved her so much it was decided that we had to let her go (never an easy decision). She was my shadow, and my best friend. I miss her so much. Then, John's lovely soft haired Vizsla, Anci Teca passed away. He is beyond consoling. He is heart broken. He loved that "Teca" so much. She, too, was a marvelous hunter, boat captain, and his best bud - they went every where together. She wasn't just a Vizsla, she was much more than that. Teca slept right next to John in our bed since she was 7 weeks old. As he said when we buried her, No one can understand the bond we had. That Vizsla stole my heart. We lost two Vizslas in 13 days. We are so torn. All we have left is Sand Storm (Sandy), Teca's daughter. Teca had one litter in her life time, and she gave birth to 11 healthy pups. Out of the 11 pups, I know of only two who have had litters. She was a beautiful VIZSLA. Good night Teca and Kopo take care of each other. You will never know how much we loved the both of you. 18 OPNC - AKC s New Open Show Format The American Kennel Club recently approved several new initiatives designed to increase participation at dog shows and to give newer exhibitors a venue in which they might have greater success, and thus be more inclined to stay interested in the sport. One of these, the 4-to-6 Month Beginner Puppy class, was covered on BISD (Best In Show Daily) a couple of weeks ago in Bringing Out the Baby. ( ) The second of these is the Open Show, a concept that may at first seem illogical, and perhaps not that enticing, to America s competitive exhibitors. The AKC calls the open show, approved to begin in July 2012, an upgrade from the Sanctioned Match, and says it is more receptive to exhibitors, FSS (Foundation Stock Service Breeds) and Miscellaneous breeds. Based on information from AKC sources, the intention of this type of show is to give new and less experienced exhibitors a venue in which they can be successful with their dogs. In theory, it will increase the chance that they ll want to continue to go to dog shows. It is also designed to give the average owner-handler a greater chance to win big. As with the 4-to-6 month class, professional handlers ( any person who belongs or has belonged to a professional handlers organization, distributed rate cards, or otherwise advertised or represented themselves as handling dogs for pay ) are not allowed to exhibit at open shows, not even to show their own dogs. In another twist, no AKC champions are allowed. In addition, no AKC championship points will be awarded at open shows. However, as in the 4-to-6 class at regular dog shows, Certificate of Merit points will be awarded to winners under the same system by which they are currently available to Miscellaneous and Foundation Stock Service breeds, as explained in Bringing Out the Baby. The Miscellaneous and FSS breeds in particular may benefit from this type of show, because at open shows the classes for each subset of breeds is considered a Group. Therefore, the Best in Show lineup will include the winners of the traditional seven Groups Sporting, Hound, Working, Terrier, Toy, Non-Sporting and Herding plus the Miscellaneous class winner and the FSS winner. How It Works Any dog club approved to hold a regular show is also eligible to hold an open show. All-breed clubs must offer classes for all AKC-recognized, Miscellaneous and FSS breeds, and must offer the 4- to-6 Month class in addition to all regular classes. To hold an open show, a club must apply to AKC at least 90 days prior to the date of the event and must include the judging panel with the application. However, entries can close any time prior to or on the day of the show. Regulations require that a premium list flier be published 30 days prior to the show. Clubs may hold two open shows per year in addition to their regular shows. Incidentally, to distinguish the open show from the dog show where AKC championship points can be obtained, the shows that exhibitors have attended for years will now be called championship shows. Open shows, like the 4-to-6 Beginner Puppy class, must be judged by an AKC-approved or provisional judge anyone with an AKC judge s number but the judge doesn t have to be approved for the breeds he or she will judge at the open show. The speed at which the judging will proceed at open shows is reduced from 30 dogs per hour the standard at current shows to 20 dogs per hour, to allow extra time for puppies and inexperienced exhibitors. Several additional changes will be seen at open shows. In the new 4-to-6 Months class, a puppy is never disqualified or excused except for attacking another dog or a person. A male puppy in this class without two fully descended testicles will remain in competition, but the situation must be noted in the judge s book. Will the Open Show Catch On? Open shows could create a venue where, once and for all, owner-handlers can compete with their dogs on a more level playing field. AKC has reported that more than 80 percent of dogs at their shows today are exhibited by their owners. The open show will provide a venue at which quality dogs shown by their owners and breeders although not those that have already earned their championships 18

19 can win Groups and Bests in Show without having to contend with the inevitable politics inherent when popular professional handlers and highly advertised dogs are in competition. In any case, one hopes that American clubs and exhibitors will give the open show a chance. Many a long-time exhibitor can be heard to lament the fact that the puppy match is a thing of the past, and the cry from owner-handlers for a more level playing field has been heard for decades. Perhaps a place exists here for the open show. Perhaps the AKC open show will revive a passion among dog people for spending the day with others of their ilk, enjoying the dogs, without the pressure of having to compete against the sport s professional handlers.
