In a mdest sized bak yard (abut half an are) they have arranged abut 3,528 square feet f aviary flr spae whih will ammdate a lt f birds very niely. Thugh there are six different aviary designs n the plae they share the mmn nstrutin medium f steel and wire. Perhaps the mst simple in design are the pipe and hain link ages used t huse the maaws. Maaws, f urse, are apable f hewing ut f less substantial aviaries. These ages are similar t the standard dg run but with the additin f a slanted tin rf. Mst f the hain link ages are plaed up against an ld barn that prvides shelter frm the wind and rain n ne side. Heavy perhes and a nesting barrel make the ages mfrtable fr the large birds. Fd and water are served in heavy rks plaed n ement blks n the flr. They are servied thrugh lw drs with n safety znes. A send, equally familiar style f aviary is fund alng the east side f Magill's prperty. It nsists f 4' x 8' x 8' ages side by side frmed int a lng bank f ten flights. These age frames are built f 1/2 " square steel tube and vered with 1/2 'x 1 "weld wire. There

There are five rwned pigens, sme Indian ringnek parakeets and a pair f white-rested laughing thrushes all living harmniusly tgether. The real eye ather n the plae is the duble deker aviary - an avian nd, as it were. The mplex vers an area just 16 by 30feet but ntains 60 flights. It was designed as a katiel breeding faility (ne pair per flight) when Magill was disappintedwithlny breeding results. The tp dek is a mirrr image f the lwer flr. There are 15 tw ft wide by six ft lng flights n eah side f a fur ft aisle. The seed hppers and nest bxes are hungnthe drfeahflight and servied frm the aisle. In this mplex there are water rks that are filled 30 at a time with the turn f a fauet. Althugh the struture lked a bit shaky t my skeptial eye it easily withstd my 230 punds running up and dwn the stairs and thrugh the aisles. This mplexntains mstly katiels and a few lutin peahfae lvebirds. It is a very enmial arrangement regarding time and labr fr maintenane. Sme f Magill's aviaries are n ement slabs and sme are n blk ftings with dirt flrs. Many f the birds - espeially the rse breasted kats - lve t dig in the earth. The steel aviaries are set n % " spaers s the entirelength ftheframes are nt diretly n the nrete. The spae als allws easy draining f rain and hse water. All f the birds are fed apprpriate seed mixtures - parakeet and sunflwer fr the small parrts t whih safflwer is added fr the mediumsized birds. The maaws get that mixture with the additin f rabbit fd, dg fd, hemp, and pumpkin seed. All f the birds get gdies tw t three times per week. Frzen rn andwhle wheat bread d it fr the katiels and lvebirds. The larger birds als get a mixture fdied apple, range, uumbers, arrts, elery and brli. Mineral blk and uttle bne is available mst f the time. Water, furse, is hanged daily with the rks being srubbed weekly. The Magill bak yard is definitely dediated t the birds. Sine Magill prefers t keep just ne pair f birds t a flight it was neessary t have as many flights as pssible.
