It's that slow, high-pitched tone we use with babies and puppies that has a "sing-song," lilting quality to it. A recent study has shown that there's real training value to this speech pattern especially when working with young dogs. The study was conducted at a shelter in New York City where the scientists played several recordings to a group of 10 puppies and 10 adult dogs. The recordings were of 30 different women with a variety of speech patterns reading the same line of dialogue. The dialogue was basically what we would say when seeing a cute dog (i.e. Oh what a cute good boy!") and was read to both a picture of a dog and to an actual person in front of them. After listening to the recordings, the researchers observed that the women definitely spoke in a higher pitched tone of voice to the photos of the dogs, especially if they were puppies, but did not use the same tones when speaking the same dialogue to another person. When the recordings of the higher-pitched voices were played to the dogs, most of the puppies reacted energetically to the speakers and some were observed making play bows. They did not react strongly to the recordings were the women were speaking in a normal tone of voice. On the other hand, the adult dogs did not seem to have a strong reaction to any of the recordings. Clearly there's a benefit to using a higher, song-like pitch to our voices when training puppies and the study bears this common experience out. The election will be held at the General Membership Meeting on May 31, At this time all candidates for office will have a few minutes to state why they are interested in running for the position, and why they should be elected. On Election night, we need present a 15% quorum of members in good standing for voting to take place. She will start seeking sponsorships for the class ribbons and awards. There will be a form in the newsletter and available at the clubhouse, and a box in the clubhouse where you can put your form and donation. We are still looking for someone to pick up a judge from the airport around 2:15 p.m. on that Friday and take her to the hotel in Delafield. 5 General Membership Meeting Wednesday, April 26, 2017 (continued) UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Daryl said the property search committee looked at a building in West Allis. It would work quite well for us, but unfortunately has an accepted offer, so we ll wait and see. There are a few others they are checking on. Linda Roman and Terry Tauschmann toured the old JC Penneys building on 71st and Greenfield. It is approx sq. feet, and fairly good condition. There are 2 floors plus a large basement, plenty of parking, but no grass. The roof needs repair which they estimate at $20000 and needs a new heating system. Linda got the info on this building when she attended the West Allis Business Assoc. They are enthused about us. This building is $240,000 and open to offers. Linda also signed us up for a 5 foot flower urn in downtown West Allis that will have our name on it. Linda has one for her business and will maintain ours also. Martha Ryan said she could pick up the judge on Friday from the airport. Thank you Martha!!!
