1 The Border Times January Newsletter of the Northeast Border Terrier Club Northeast Border Terrier Club Minutes, Wildwood NJ January 20, 2018 President Ann Steinbacher, called the meeting to order at 12:41 PM. She congratulated today s winners and thanked everyone for coming. Motion to accept the minutes from the last meeting as published on the website was made by Patrick Glover and seconded by Barbara Dalane. Secretary; No Report. Treasurer; A hard copy of the report was distributed. Our bank account balance is $ as of 1/20/2018. Committee Reports: Supported Entry; Theo Congdon reports that the Boardwalk cluster was not supported this year as the request was submitted past the BTCA deadline for approval. He reports that the decision when to hold these shows is done on a year to year basis making it difficult for him to submit the paperwork by BTCA s deadline. Trophy; No report. Nominating Committee; Ann Steinbacher read the committees report with the following nominations, President Linda Parker, Vice President Theo Congdon, Treasurer Rebecca Gurley, Secretary Holly Woodward. Additional nominations may be submitted until 3/20/2018 to the club secretary Holly Woodward. Old Business: NBTC will not be submitting a proposal to host the BTCA National Specialty in New Business: Ruth Ann Naun encouraged members to consider putting your name forward to judge Sweepstakes for the 2021 National Specialty. It is an important step for anyone interested in becoming an AKC judge of Border Terriers. President, Ann Steinbacher presented Jean Clark s data on the small number of entries we have at our performance supported entry events. After some discussion, the club voted to continue supporting these performance events. President, Ann Steinbacher brought up the idea of the NBTC requesting the BTCA to hold a Sweepstakes annually at the Montgomery County Kennel Club. Discussion ensued. Linda Parker made a motion to request the BTCA to hold Sweepstakes annually at MCKC except every fifth year when we hold a Sweepstakes at the Morris and Essex show. Seconded by Judith Rivers. The motion did not pass with 6 voting for and 8 voting against. President, Ann Steinbacher asked if anyone would like to suggest a nominee for the AKC Outstanding Sportsmanship Award. Holly Woodward suggested Susan Storey for her years of service as the BTCA perpetual and challenge trophy coordinator. Motion made by Holly Woodward, seconded by Barbara Dalane. Vote was unanimous to approve. Holly will send a letter to the BTCA requesting same. Motion to adjourn made by Patrick Glover and seconded by Sandy Gillen. Respectfully submitted, Holly Woodward

2 The Border Times January REPORT OF NOMINATING COMMITTEE Northeast Border Terrier Club November 10, 2017 The nominating committee has met via telephone and to consider all eligible candidates for the term of office. On behalf of the nominating committee, I present the following slate of officers for the club s consideration: President Vice President Secretary Treasurer Nominating Committee: Elizabeth Faber Barbara Dalane Deborah Lawton NBTC Bylaws, Art. V, Sec. 4 Linda Parker 49 Brookside Drive Gardner, MA Theo Congdon 242 Ridge Road Tenants Harbor, ME Holly Woodward 226 Rockwood Pond Road Fitzwilliam, NH Rebecca Gurley 26 Minot Avenue Acton, MA b) Additional nominations of eligible members may be made by written petition addressed to the Secretary and received at his regular address on or before March 20th, signed by five (5) members and accompanied by the written acceptance of each such additional Nominee signifying his willingness to be a candidate. If no valid nominations are received by the Secretary by April 1, the Nominating Committee s slate shall be declared elected and no balloting will be required. President s Message Jan It started out cold, but warmed up on Friday and Saturday in Wildwood. Congratulations to all the winners. The lunch and meeting at the Key West Cafe was terrific. We had a nice turnout of members and some guests. Everyone had a great time. Meeting went well, short and sweet and left plenty of time for socializing. It is always a good time spent with good friends catching up with the latest news. Holly will post the meeting minutes for all to see. Thank you, Theo, for taking pictures. Next meeting will be in May at the Windham show. Windsor Twp, NJ May 13, Windham Cty. KC, Brooklyn, CT (Pup & Vet. sweeps, Barbara Wood Sweeps judge) These are all BTCA supported entry events with NBTC supplying prizes. If you have a cell phone with you take some photos at any event you're at with your Border and send them to me, please. Lots of interesting things in this newsletter but there could be lots more if folks would just send me letters, articles, photos, stories, etc. The rest of us would love to know what you do with your Border, how your Border fits in with your lifestyle and interests. There was a good entry of Borders at the GBAEC Earthdog Test last August and we will again be offering prizes there. Don't forget that the WHWTCA hosts an Earthdog Test the day after MCKC show in October. Please take the time ot explore our website, There's lots of info about NBTC events, articles about the breed and links to learn more. It would be a useful site to refer folks to if they ask about Borders, as would the BTCA site. 4 The Border Times January What's going on here?? From a very early Border Times No she's not dead. This is Bandersnatch Time for Crime aka Tick demonstrating how one should be positioned (and lie quietly) for X-rays. She's also showing off a very bad grooming job. She's not sedated at all, that's why it's a funny photo. Most dogs have to be sedated or arm wrestled to do this! She LOVES to lie like that. I taught her when she was very young and ever since it is a preferred position. This is the same position used for ultrasound and she is so good at it she was used as an ultrasound demo dog for practicing when I was in vet school. She was in the ICU at PENN Vet hospital once and when the staff saw her like this they freaked out because they thought "four legs up in the air" must mean dead, but no, she was "resting comfortably". I bet everyone can teach their Borders to do this if they start young and employ the standard way to a BTs heart (FOOD). Makes life much easier at the vet's! Pam Mueller Garden State All Terrier Club will be holding AKC Earthdog Tests May 3, 2018, the day before their (BTCA supported entry) show. This is their first earthdog test in over 20 years, would be great if Border Terriers were well represented there.
