I hope everyone stayed warm, including your fur babies! MDTC Election time is just around the corner! The 4 Officer positions are up for election every year: President, Vice-president, Secretary and Treasurer. The Board member positions are a three-year term. We will have (3) Officer positions coming available (President, Secretary and Treasurer) along with the possibility of a couple of Board positions. If you are interested in running for any of these positions, we will be taking nominations from the floor at the April 24th General Membership meeting. The official election will be held on May 29th at the General Membership meeting, so please plan on attending this meeting. The club s Holiday party was held on January 19th at the Pulaski Inn in Cudahy, and what a fun night it was! A large group of members and their families attended the party this year, the snow did not stop them from attending. Thank you Kim and Brad Rinzel, for organizing this event for us and to the Pulaski Inn, for once again providing the excellent selection of food and desserts. The Instructor of the Year award was presented to Laura Sadler, the Outstanding Service award was presented to Dawn Butler, the Lifetime Membership award was presented to Linda Roman, Mark Anderson and Kira Haslam, and the Super Heeldown award was presented to Daryl Stuppan and Cashmere. Congratulations to the award recipients and the club members and their furry partners who achieved titles throughout 2018! There are some upcoming exhibitions coming in the next couple of months. The Pet Expo, on February 2nd and the Milwaukee Sports Show on March 6th 10th, we will have a booth again this year at both events. Sports Show signup sheets for the obedience and agility demos will be available only at the Indoor building. Please consider signing up for a few of them and show off what you and your fur partner can do in front of the audience watching the shows. The 2019 Milwaukee Brewer games have been picked and the training will begin soon. If you would like to volunteer some of your time to help with this very successful fundraiser for the club, please contact Mari Pavleje. Open House is on Tuesday, February 12th at 7:00pm at the Indoor Building. Dogs wanting to join the beginner class must be 10 months or older, must be non-dog aggressive and comfortable being handled by others. Handlers and Dogs wanting to join the beginner class must participate in Try-Outs on Tuesday, February 19th at 7:00pm at the Indoor Building. Beginning classes will start on Tuesday, February 26th from 8:00pm to 9:00pm for all dogs that have met the requirements and are registered by the 19th. Stay warm and Happy Valentine s Day! Kathy

It s winter in Wisconsin and it never hurts to see a few reminders about keeping your dog safe this time of year. Winter wellness: Has your pet had his/her preventive care exam (wellness exam) yet? Cold weather may worsen some medical conditions such as arthritis. Know the limits: Just like people, pets' cold tolerance can vary from pet to pet based on their coat, body fat stores, activity level, and health. Be aware of your pet's tolerance for cold weather, and adjust accordingly. You will probably need to shorten your dog's walks in very cold weather to protect you both from weather-associated health risks. Provide choices: Just like you, pets prefer comfortable sleeping places and may change their location based on their need for more or less warmth. Give them some safe options to allow them to vary their sleeping place to adjust to their needs. Stay inside. Cats and dogs should be kept inside during cold weather. Like people, cats and dogs are susceptible to frostbite and hypothermia and should be kept inside. Check the paws: Check your dog's paws frequently for signs of cold-weather injury or damage, such as cracked paw pads or bleeding. During a walk, a sudden lameness may be due to an injury or may be due to ice accumulation between his/her toes. You may be able to reduce the chance of iceball accumulation by clipping the hair between your dog's toes. Play dress-up: If your dog has a short coat or seems bothered by the cold weather, consider a sweater or dog coat. Have several on hand, so you can use a dry sweater or coat each time your dog goes outside. Some pet owners also use booties to protect their dog's feet; if you choose to use them, make sure they fit properly. Wipe down: During walks, your dog's feet, legs and belly may pick up deicers, antifreeze, or other chemicals that could be toxic. When you get back inside, wipe down (or wash) your pet's feet, legs and belly to remove these chemicals and reduce the risk that your dog will be poisoned after (s)he licks them off of his/her feet or fur. Stay home: Hot cars are a known threat to pets, but cold cars also pose significant risk to your pet's health. You're already familiar with how a car can rapidly cool down in cold weather; it becomes like a refrigerator, and can rapidly chill your pet. Limit car travel to only that which is necessary, and don't leave your pet unattended in the vehicle. continued

3 A few things to note for the upcoming year DOT continued Class start times vary from month to month. Watch the newsletter or the website for accurate times. If you are arriving late to your class, please wait on the sidelines for a quiet time or an invitation from the instructor to join the class. This minimizes disruption to the students already engaged in class. It s best to be ready to go at the class start time but life sometimes has other plans. Thanks to the Building and Grounds crew for the wonderful job they did cleaning up the indoor location, including washing out all of the crates! If you use a crate during class to hold your dog, please wash/spray the crate down when your dog comes out. Materials are provided near the crating area. This minimizes disease transmission and keeps everyone healthier. The Club will start offering recognition to handlers earning titles for Scent Work or Nose Work in Please keep track of titles earned so that we can support your success at next year s Holiday Party. Have fun training! The Sports Show Is Coming! The 2019 Journal Sentinel Sports Show is scheduled for Wednesday through Sunday, March 6-10 in the Expo building at State Fair Park. We'll be part of the Main Stage entertainment line-up again this year. That means we'll need plenty of people and dogs to demonstrate just what a trained dog can do, both in obedience and agility. The sign-up book will be at the St. Paul location only this year, so be sure to check it out and sign up for a shift or two in our booth. We'll also have a list of rules and guidelines for exhibiting available in the sign-up book. After you check out the rules and guidelines, if you have any questions about whether your dog would be a good candidate for the Sports Show, please talk to your instructor. Mari Pavleje would be happy to answer any other questions you have. You can talk to her at training on Sundays and Wednesdays or call her ( ). We're also looking for people to help us set up our booth on Tuesday, March 5th, and take it down on Sunday the 10th. We usually meet at the St. Paul building around 9:00am on Tuesday, load up our vehicles, and head to the Fair Park. We're usually finished setting up our booth by noon. On Sunday, right after our last show (usually in midafternoon), we load up everything from the stage area and take it back to the St. Paul building. We can't take down our booth until the show is over at 6:00pm. For both set-up and take-down, we are especially in need of people with trucks or minivans. If you can help us out on either of these days, please contact Mari

5 Brewer Game Fundraising It's time to start planning for our annual fund-raising efforts at Brewer games will be our 21st year working for Sportservice at Miller Park and, before that, County Stadium. Since the 1999 season, we've earned almost $129,000 working games per season (including playoffs) as well the occasional concert. The games we're scheduled for are listed below, and there's also a Billy Joel concert this year on April 26th that we hope to work at, too. Report time is usually 2.5 to 3 hours before the game starts, games usually last 3 hours or so, and then we have 45 minutes to an hour of clean-up before we're finished. New this season, Sportservice is giving us additional commission if we provide a cook for our stand. So, if you don't want to be on a cash register, you can cook instead! The only drawback is that you will have to attend an additional training session just for cooks. If you're interested in cooking, please indicate that when you sign up. As usual, all new and returning workers will have to attend a training session before working. Training sessions will take place at Miller Park and some off-site locations and usually last from 2 to 2.5 hours. There are sign-up sheets at both the St. Paul location for those interested in working. You can also contact Mari Pavleje directly, either in person or by phone ( ). Working at these games is a lot of fun and also very lucrative for the club as we save money for a new building. So, we hope you will consider joining us this season! If you have any questions about working or training, please contact Mari.
