This event is a wonderful chance for MDTC to showcase our training and we did a fine job. I invite everyone (including instructors) to put this event on your calendar for next year. Save the dates in the beginning of March, We will start running the monthly Heel-Down competitions again as soon as the weather is favorable and whole membership is training at the same location, at the same time. For those handlers unfamiliar with this event, it is an informal competition within the Club to demonstrate your dog s heeling ability. This event happens roughly monthly, culminating in a competition among all of the monthly winners to find the annual winner. It is a fun chance to show off! Start working on your heeling skills so that you are ready to hit the ground running when we start up again! April showers bring May flowers and the start of mosquito season! Make sure your pet is on heartworm preventive medication, as well as a flea and tick control program. Ask your vet to recommend a plan designed specifically for your pet. ~ Obedience Instructors New season, new start! There is an Instructor s Meeting on Sunday, May 7, 2017 at 10:30am. We ll discuss current staffing, independent activities for students and reintroduce the continuing education (CE) plan. Instructors in,, Tracking, etc. are also welcome and encouraged to attend but please understand that the main focus will be on the obedience topics. We will meet at the outdoor training site, in the Clubhouse, directly after training wraps up that day. The understanding is that all obedience instructors will be in attendance. Please contact me directly with questions or concerns (krinzel@sbcglobal.net). PINS FOR THE PARADE MDTC has participated in the West Allis Christmas Parade the past few years and now there's going to be a bowling fundraiser for the West Allis Christmas parade and we've been invited to take part! It's on Sunday, May 7th beginning at 1:30 with a chicken dinner followed by 3 games of bowling at Riviera Lanes in West Allis. It's a 9-pin tap format; for you nonbowlers, that means it counts as a strike even if one pin is left standing. There will be also be door prizes and raffles. All for $25. If you're interested, please contact Mari Pavleje ( ) by April 15th. Entries are due by May 1st, and they can only take 80 bowlers.
3 MDTC ELECTIONS The offices up for election are President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. These are one year terms. Also up for election are two board member positions. These are three year terms. The election committee has nominated: Kathy Gibowski, President. Mari Pavleje, Vice President. Chris Niver, Secretary, and Kathleen McNerney, Treasurer. Two board positions: Daryl Ann Stuppan and Jennie Newman. If you re interested in running for any of these positions, MDTC will be taking nominations off the floor at the April general membership meeting, April 26, The nominated person must be there to accept the nomination, or send a written note stating they accept the nomination. To be nominated the person must be a member in good standing for one year, and be up to date on club dues. The election will be held at the General Membership Meeting on May 31, At this time all candidates for office will have a few minutes to state why they are interested in running for the position, and why they should be elected. Please plan on attending the election night meeting since a voting quorum is required. OUR AKC SHOW IN JUNE On June 10th and 11th, MDTC will hold its annual AKC Obedience and Rally show. This is a major fund raiser for our club and a fun show to be part of. We still need volunteers to help make the show a success If you want to see competitive obedience in action and have a tasty lunch, plus be entered in the volunteer raffle.please contact Daryl Stuppan darylstuppan@aol.com. If you cannot possibly donate your time that weekend there is still a way to help. Every year, the club awards ribbons and gifts to the winners of 1st thru 4th place, and ribbons to Qualifiers in all events. Despite efforts to keep costs reasonable, these awards are costly for the club. In the past, MDTC members have sponsored these ribbons and gifts and we are hoping that you would continue this tradition by making a cash donation. In return for your generosity, the club will continue rewarding participants for achievements in rally and obedience and your name will be listed in the MDTC Newsletter and the Show Catalog. Daryl Ann Stuppan ( Cashmere ) will be stopping by training classes in the coming weeks to answer questions and accept donations. These donations really help our club keep the tradition of hosting an AKC Obedience trial going. Please support our club. 4 MILWAUKEE DOG TRAINING CLUB General Membership Meeting Wednesday, March 29, 2017 The meeting was called to order at 8:07 p.m. by President Kathy Gibowski. The minutes of the last meeting were approved as printed. There was no correspondence. PRESIDENT S REPORT: Kathy thanked everyone who worked the sports show and help make it a success. Thanks to Mari who ran the day events and Daryl who ran evenings. And a big thanks to all who helped man the booth and do the demos. On 4/1 we will have a booth at Jr. Pups N Stuff dog walk fund raising event. Kathleen will be running our booth. It is at Rainbow Park on 116th and Trecker Way. Our puppy class instructors Linda Roman and Deb Jumes along with DOT Kim Rinzel did an interview with M Magazine. Our plinko game at Pet Expo made $100 which was donated to Romp. COMMITTEES DIRECTOR OF TRAINING: Kim said she will be having an instructors meeting on May 7. This will be primarily obedience topics such as staffing issues, staffing education and continuing education program. She plans to have it after training on that Sunday. : Fun match was this past Saturday and we made over $800. Thanks to folks who worked (Evan scribed all day) and participated. Kathy G. spoke to Tracy and they plan to cancel agility training on the weekend of our AKC show so folks can work and/or enter. FLYBALL: Tournament this weekend at Think Pawsitive in New Berlin. AKC SHOW: Workers have been gotten for almost all the positions. A driver is still needed for our judge (from airport to hotel, hotel to show and back for the weekend). Will order ribbons. Daryl said Khoua has send out 80+ s to possible donors for our raffle. BUILDING & GROUNDS: Evan said they have been very busy. The doorknob at St. Paul site broke again. They got a new lever type door knob (same key works). The knob on the bathroom door also broke. The vacuum needed repair. It was fixed and is up for grabs. We now have a new bagless vacuum. There is a group cleaning tomorrow night at 6:30 p.m. Will glue the mat too. It takes about 1 to 1 1/2 hours to do all the cleaning. SOCIAL: Pulled pork and cookies on April 9 at the indoor site. GOOD & WELFARE: Peggy is having hip surgery on Apr. 21. She could use help caring for her dogs. Contact her if you can. A card was sent to her for her loss of dog Lulu. Nancy Eastman got a new puppy. Kathy G s Mom s aunt passed away at age 103. Lifetime member Bee Klatt celebrated her 90th birthday. EXHIBITIONS: Mari said they did the St. Ann s demo. Anyone available daytimes, let her know. There are a couple high interest days in May. Dogs must be kid friendly. May 5 in Wauwatosa and May 19 in Cedarburg. She has gotten the info for State Fair. Will hope to have our plinko game there. FUND RAISING: Opening day is Monday. She had to get new hats for workers, and they came up with a navy hat with a paw print and our name, MDTC, on it. They were $8 each. Turned out nice and folks are interested to buy, so more will be ordered for selling at the club. If you are interested in working at Brewer games, see Mari. NOMINATING: Chris Niver said the slate nominated is: Kathy Gibowski, President. Mari Pavleje, Vice President. Chris Niver, Secretary, and Kathleen McNerney, Treasurer. Two board positions: Daryl Ann Stuppan and Jennie Newman. Floor nominations will be taken at the April meeting. If Chris is elected Secretary, there will be a 3rd director seat available. If there are no other nominees for secretary in April, will take nomination for Chris position. The top two vote getters will get the 3 year terms, the 3rd one will get rest of Chris two year term.
5 General Membership Meeting Wednesday, March 29, 2017 (continued) UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Daryl reported the property search committee has been quiet for now. Cudahy property building needs way too much work. The site near domes is an historical site and doubt we can undue. Chris had looked into it, and it requires too much repair. Gov. Walker has not approved funding for freeway work, so it appears we have more time and no real rush on losing indoor site. Dale said she has procured 12 free chairs for the indoor site. Thank you Dale. NEW BUSINESS: Mari said we have done the West Allis Christmas parade past few years. They are having a bowling fund raiser on May 7. Starts at 1 p.m. See Mari if you are interested. New class of 2/26 was read. Motion by Evan to accept them as members, seconded by Kathleen. Approved. Show wins. Motion by Mari to adjourn, seconded by Carole Knobloch. Meeting adjourned at 8:42 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Dona Barsul Secretary TEAM USA AND GABBI! Gabbi Kabakchieva is freshman in high school with big passion for working with animals. Scotty is All American dog (fancy for mutt) who was rescued by WI Humane Society from a kill shelter as a puppy back in Together they are members of MDTC. Both discovered agility at the end of 2014 and have been training since at Milwaukee Dog Club. Against all odds (limited experience and starting from scratch for both), Scotty and Gabbi made the 2017 AKC USA to compete in agility at the European Open Junior in Luxembourg this July. In their first national competition, AKC Junior Competition in Florida last December, Gabbi & Scotty finished 4th. The European Open Junior will be their first international competition. Any help they could get would be greatly appreciated and would be used for their traveling expenses. members are responsible for their own funding. If you would like to contribute to the team, please visit this page: You can also help send them off in style by buying a T-shirt. Go to: Buy a t-shirt designed by Gabbi (featuring her drawings of Scotty) and help Scotty & Gabbi compete in European Open Junior (EOJ) agility competition in Luxembourg, as a part of the USA team. The deadline for ordering a t-shirt is April 26th. Thank You for all your support.
6 SPORTS SHOW FUN! Thank you to everyone who participated in any way to make our time at the 2017 Sports Show a success! From set-up to the shows to take-down, your help was necessary and appreciated. Special thanks to Rick Sasek who did an excellent job as emcee again, moving things along from obedience to agility to flyball and, finally, to Bravo's Go Dog Go demonstration. The crowd always loves the agility portion of the show because of the skills of all of the dogs and, I think, because we always have a lot of different breeds participating. The flyball demo was greeted with a lot of "oohs and aahs" again this year, especially when the dogs were passing each other. Thanks to everyone in the booth encouraging people to enter the drawing for the free membership, we had about 125 entries this year. We hope the winner will be joining us soon! Again, thanks everybody for another successful Sports Show Mari Pavleje Contact Work Booth Work EXHIBITION AT ST. ANN CENTER On March 23rd, we did a demonstration at St. Ann Center for Intergenerational Care in St. Francis. St. Ann is a day care facility for children, the elderly, and the disabled, so our audience was large and quite diverse - from 1-year olds all the way up to 80-year olds! Thanks as always to the "regulars" who I can count on for daytime demos: Evan Emmons and Maggie, Sam Emmons and Ember, Roger Mankiewicz and Zach, and Jackie Paisley and Riley. And, special thanks to the dogs who were really good with all those little hands reaching out and grabbing at them! If there's anyone else available for daytime demos that I don't already have on my list, please let me know. The more the merrier! Thanks! Mari Pavleje Exhibition Coordinator
