1 NORCAL GOLDEN RETRIEVER CLUB Golden Notes Elected Officers: President Eileen Oshiro Secretary/Treasurer Lisa Newton 1675 Fallen Leaf Los Altos, CA VP Performance Terry Southard VP Breed Robin Baker VP Field Scott Woodland Director Nancy Kelly Director Pamela McDonald JULY/AUGUST 2013 From the President: Eileen Oshiro VOLUME 43, ISSUE III Sometimes we put on events, knowing that they are likely to lose money. Often they have heavy labor requirements. Tracking tests and WC/WCX tests come to mind. We hold these events because we participate in so many activities with our Goldens. We haven t held tracking tests for several years now due to lack of grounds, but we do hold yearly WC/WCX tests. You will find the full report and results within this issue of Golden Notes. Thanks to the efforts of chair, Susan Osborn and her hard working committee, we had two training days, a pheasant training day, and the WC/WCX in a one month period. These events rely on everyone pitching in and working their share...or more than their share...or coming to work even though they don t have a dog entered! So thank you to Susan and everyone who worked so hard for our Goldens! Keep it up! Eileen Donations and empty baskets/ buckets are needed for the Specialty Raffle. If you have anything to donate, please contact Tammy Ballew to arrange a pickup at Fishrcop@aol.com or Tammy will be at upcoming events and can pick up there! Thank you!! Standing Officials Financial Secretary Patty Simmons Membership Secretary Letty Regan In Memoriam On the loss of Finn, Saffron Radiant Tipp Town Boy, CDX, RE, TD, SH, WC January 29, 2005 to June 28, 2013 Finn was a big red boy with lots of goofy golden personality. His favorite person on the planet was Diane Glassmeyer and every time he saw her, he lit up like a Christmas tree and went into full blown wriggles and tooth bearing smiles for her, and I became "just another person in his fan club." Finn could be a little closed off and almost introspective at times but many friends saw the strength and fun in him and encouraged us to pursue different venues, with much success. We weren't finished yet, but he left us rather quickly this summer after briefly showing signs of illness. He has left a big hole in our hearts and in our household. I will forever, ever cherish the day we achieved our Senior Hunter title, and also the first day I didn't miss his pheasant out hunting. Truly treasured moments. I know you all understand. He is greatly missed by our family, and our doggie family, too. 2 GOLDEN NOTES Argus Rise of the Phoenix, CD, AX, AXJ Dogs are not our whole lives but they make our lives whole Roger Caras Early 2013, my father Anthony Finco began having some issues with his hip. Never one to be sick, he immediately went to the doctor and given a diagnosis of sciatic nerve that was then changed to arthritis. A few months later, my dad fell at home and could not get up. Paramedics were called and he was brought to the ER with severe dehydration. It was on that fateful trip that we learned my father actually was in stage four lung cancer and that it had moved to his hip. Five days later my father passed away early in the morning of May 9th. He was 80 years old. I have been blessed with having my parents for 50 years, especially my father. He supported everything that I did with my dogs and played a key role in my ability to do as much as I have. It was fitting that I found out about his failing health while at our NORCAL GRC Agility trial in Petaluma. I was surrounded by friends who were able to support me and help me get through the initial stages. All of us have experienced the loss of a beloved golden. Some may find it odd, but I attribute my strength for my father in his last days to those experiences I have had with my dogs. I knew that just being present, talking with him, and providing as much healing warmth as I could meant so much to him and helped me come to terms with the idea that we were losing him. Before he passed away, my father was able to get a visit from his beloved Dusty, our youngest golden. On the morning that he passed away, my father our oldest, Starr was with him. The Hospice nurse who came to our home that morning encouraged us to have the dogs say their own goodbyes. She told us that they too will grieve this loss and that it Page 2 was important for them as well as for us. I am grateful for her insight. It was due to the death of my father that I was unable to complete a May/June issue of Golden Notes. I apologize for any missed brags or announcements due to this, but I hope that you will enjoy this issue and the vast amount of information within. At the writing of this edition of Golden Notes, I learned that the Golden world lost a great dog NOC OTCH DD's Dreams Do Come True UDX24 OGM RE TDX VCD1 JH NA NAJ WCX. All of the Golden Community, especially our NORCAL GRC family extend our condolences to the Anderson family. Dream was a once in a lifetime dog and we all enjoyed the thrill of her ride. Minutes of General Meeting of Norcal Golden Retriever Club Date: May 11, 2013 Meeting called to order at 5:55 p.m. following WC/ WCX test on T2 at Denverton property. In attendance: President Eileen Oshiro, Secretary Lisa Newton, Director Nancy Kelly, Director Pam McDonald, general membership: Susan Osborn, Debbie Tandoc, Ed Ryska, Carol Millette Snodgrass, Nancy and George Murillo, Pat Romeiro, Diane Glassmeyer; and potential new member Ember Kitchner. SECRETARY S REPORT: Nothing to report at this meeting. TREASURER S REPORT: None given at this meeting. FIELD REPORT: Presented by Eileen Oshiro. Thank you all for working so hard at the WC/WCX test and making it a success. Special thanks to Susan Osborn for organizing this event and Pam McDonald as test secretary, and Debbie Tandoc for assisting our field VP. Thanks to our judges Ed Ryska and Carol Millette Snodgrass. Discussion follows regarding possibility of changing month in which test is held because of warm temps and foxtail exposure. Locations and venues discussed. Agreed to consider and hold further discussion re same in future. Discussion at length regarding Master National proposal which will be presented June 15 th to the National Committee. The entries for the Master National have been overwhelming, doubled since the test was first offered annually several years back. Proposal presented by our National delegate Janet Wood is for requirement of six additional Master Hunter test passes in addition to the five required for the MH title. Requiring additional passes would in theory eliminate new MH dogs who might not be as competitive in a National, thus lowering the entry numbers. Would this truly resolve the problem or is it a stop gap? Rebuttal argument discussed: This proposal is a Band Aid for the problem. Options that have been reviewed are a lottery draw, regional tests. Restructuring of the National and addition of another layer or tier to the test to allow for regional tests is suggested. Agreed the entire club should be presented with proposal and rebuttal and allowed to vote. Our vote as a club will then be submitted to Janet Wood, who will in turn present our vote as our delegate. June 1 st is deadline for club vote, June 15 th is submission deadline for our National delegate vote. SPECIALTY REPORT: Eileen reports the Specialty plans are going well. October 18 th is the date. Helpers are still needed. NATIONAL REPORT: We have three agility weekends, two of which devote profit to our 2016 National fund. We will not receive revenue from RV parking at the National, which is typically the main source of revenue for clubs hosting National events. Thus, these two agility events do hold special importance to our club. National committee meeting is scheduled for next Saturday, May 18, 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Susan Osborn will be chairing the WC/WCX for the National and is gaining experience with chairing our event last year, this year and next year. Thank you, Susan! Carol Millette Snodgrass will be our Field Trial chair, thank you Carol, too! We will not be holding a hunt test at the 2016 National. While on the subject of tests, it is noted that several club members who went out early in today s test stayed all day and pitched in to help, rather than just head on home. Special appreciation to those folks from all of us at Norcal. PERFORMANCE REPORT: We do have volunteers for the August Beat the Heat Match and they will be mentored by Terry Southard and Dimity Mueller. Our new Performance VP, Robin Baker, will organize a separate conformation match, rather than hold one in conjunction with this obedience/rally match as we typically have done in past. OLD BUSINESS: None. NEW BUSINESS: None. MEMBERSHIP: Please welcome a new member to our club, Ember Kitchner. She has worked at the last two picnic trials and this weekend at our WC/WCX test. We have one other potential new member, and one member whose renewal is being processed following a technical snag. There being no further business, meeting adjourned at 6:40 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Lisa Newton Secretary

I do know it is hard to find time to train and participate in an event, let alone help to work at an event that you are entered in, but it is very necessary to make our events successful. The WC/WCX test committee wants to specifically thank Samantha Dillard and Lindsey Cuff help who stayed and worked so hard all day in the heat! Brian Iwata, (who didn t have a dog entered), who shot for a very long hot day at the WCX along with another gentleman who wasn t even part of our club. George Murillo was an awesome WCX thrower most of the day. James Stevens who traveled up from LA also threw in both the land and water series. Diane Glassmeyer who stepped up to a very difficult job as bird steward. Bruce Hayes who was a live bird thrower at WC who did not have a dog entered. Scott Woodland who shot at the WC along with another gunner who was also not a club member, but thankfully enough likes to shoot. Kathy Gibson (NSDTR) and Cathy Lynch FCR) were teamed up twice to throw. Secretary, Pam McDonald stepped up to marshal at the WCX after she had put in much time taking entries and preparing the catalog, passing out ribbons and making sure that all our paperwork is turned in to GRCA. Nancy Kelly who was stuck with me sooo early in the day and was our WC Marshall all day on her legs even though she had recently had a knee replacement. Debbie Tandoc who spent tireless hours coaching and mentoring me for the chair job, and putting together a fantastic lunch for the all day workers. Ember Kitchner our very new member who helped everywhere. Lisa Newton and Eileen Oshiro who helped make things just plain run smoothly at the WCX. Pat Romeiro who helped bright and early on Saturday morning with birds and equipment and much much more, as well as Pat s little NSDTR army were at the ready, in the field, and really streamlined the their test to help keep it moving. FCR folks chipped in too. The only time there were any chairs set out to watch the dogs was on the water series and they were mostly occupied by WC and the very few people that came out for cheering us on and the club meeting. Otherwise, everybody at the "X" that wasn't out throwing or gunning, was seeing that everything was going smoothly or getting their dog ready. Thank you to everyone who stepped up above and beyond their assigned tasks. I hope that I have not forgotten anyone as it is not intentional, just that the sun baked brain of mine is just finally returning to normal. Something I want to point out to our members is that the WC/WCX test is a small golden event that is a not for profit event. We did not hire gunners, birdboys, and throwers, which would have only added to the costs to hold this event. Many other golden clubs don t event hold a WC/WCX test so we truly have to rely on the willingness of the test participants, friends, and family to make this event successful. Many people stepped up to volunteer and worked very hard all day despite the fact that they did not pass. It is hard work to keep the retriever in our golden retrievers and I hope that I can encourage more people to volunteer for the events that they feel passionately about.

4 Minutes of Meeting of Board of Directors of Norcal GRC March 30, 2013 Cypress Semiconductor Meeting called to order 12:25 p.m. Present: President Eileen Oshiro, Secretary Lisa Newton, VP Field Scott Woodland, VP Performance Terry Southard, VP Breed Robin Baker (via conference call), Director Nancy Kelly, Director Pam McDonald. Also in attendance were outgoing VP Breed Jeanetta Gulden (via conference call), and Sharon Woodland. FINANCIAL REPORT: Checking account balance $43,679, includes hunt test profit of $14,298, but does not include hunt test expense report which is yet to be submitted. SECRETARY REPORT: A donation accepted by Linda Lang from Kathy Fujita of a 30 cup coffee pot. Thank you note has been sent to Kathy for her generosity on behalf of the club. Linda had noted our coffee pot recently broke, so great timing on this very welcome donation! Letter received from Morris Animal Foundation with approximately 100 flyers describing the golden retriever lifetime study and how to participate. Flyers will be distributed at upcoming events to our club members and all interested parties. Flyers distributed at this meeting for the board s information. VP BREED REPORT: Given jointly by outgoing VP Jeanetta Gulden and incoming VP Robin Baker. SPECIALTY: Still in need of a few volunteers for our October Specialty, for grounds and set up help, and an education table. Organized so far are chairs for hospitality (Suzanne Fortner) catalog, parade of titleholders, ring steward, raffle (Tammy Ballew), trophy donations (Toni Maita). Dee Dee Anderson has obedience/rally covered. Confirmation that budget will remain the same as last year, no less. Judges are all good with our change in date to Friday instead of Saturday. Letters have been sent, awaiting AKC formal approval. Jeanetta and Toni will continue to confer and keep up to date on Specialty progress/needs. CCA: To be held July 28 in Lafayette. Robin is liaison for CCA but Jeanetta will assist and has informed Suzanne Bria of same. Jeanetta will get the binder to Robin when they next meet. SUPPORTED ENTRIES: We will be providing a supported entry for Sir Francis Drake Kennel Club s show in the fall. We need four trophies, BOB, BOS, WD and WB. Discussion regarding use of any unused trophies we may have in our possession. After discussion, decision is to provide a gift basket to allow us some fun and flexibility in providing these trophies. Robin will notify Sylvia Donahey of same. We shall also provide a gift basket for the Del Valle supported entries. SPECIALTY 2014: Suggestions for chairpersons? Discussion regarding possibility of move from current specialty location if Skyline should be forced to discontinue their current show venue for financial reasons, given current decline in entries. Our option will likely be to go with Sir Francis Drake as they have welcomed our club should the need arise. Eileen notes that the dates for our 2016 National will not change but remain as they are set. PERFORMANCE REPORTS: AGILITY REPORT: Presented by Eileen Oshiro, trial plans are coming along. Ribbons have been ordered with change to strip ribbons rather than rosettes to reduce costs. We will have full hospitality only for November agility trial. Two canopies have been purchased. There is a judging change in May but there is no added expense incurred to accommodate the new judge. FUN MATCH: Terry Southard reports we have volunteers who will be mentored by Terry and Dimity for the upcoming Beat the Heat Match at Kirigin Cellars on August 17. Megan Hundley will be event secretary. Karen Swanson will contact judges and stewards. Letty Regan will chair hospitality. Tammy and Jason Ballew will haul the trailer. Jennifer Bluette will help as needed. Carson Haines will be an obedience judge. We thank all these club members for stepping up to help with this match and give Terry and Dimity much needed support! Laura Finco is following up with a repair person she knows who is experienced with trailer and hitch repair for our trailer. Discussion follows regarding small entry for conformation at least year s match. After discussion, it is agreed that we will not offer conformation at this year s match. Robin will consider whether we shall organize and offer a separate conformation match to be hosted by our club. FIELD: March Hunt Test Report: Scott Woodland reports that the judges at this year s hunt test were well received and should certainly be included on our list of potential judges for future events. Discussion follows regarding the need for an adequate amount of clean and functional portable toilets at our field events. Discussion follows regarding the advisement for use of proper chokes by the gunners at our tests to accommodate the type of birds, weather, etc. This year we were fortunate enough to have very pleasant weather with just slight breeze and we hope for more of that! Successful hunt test weekend overall. May WC/WCX: Test is scheduled for Saturday, May 10. Premium list is posted and entries are being received by test secretary Pam McDonald. Discussion regarding altering test start times to accommodate judge Ed Ryska so that he may run his dog in WC prior to judging the WCX. All in agreement. Start times will be set as 9:00 and 9:30 unless it is determined by test secretary/committee that the entry is large enough to warrant a start time of 8:00 and 8:30. Pheasant flyer day is scheduled for Saturday April 27 th with limited entry. Picnic trial dates: No dates have been scheduled prior to the WC/X test but such is being discussed between Debbie Tandoc and picnic trial chair Susan Osborn. Future picnic trials will be rotated through the available field locations in our area. NEW BUSINESS: Rescue: Eileen notes that Norcal Rescue asked for board s advice regarding accommodating non-purebred goldens into rescue as the rescue numbers have, thankfully, decreased. Discussion follows and agreement reached to advise against such in light of the fact that rescue could indeed become very impacted again, insurance issues raised, and in addition there is another rescue organization in Northern California accommodating goldens and golden mixes. Sunshine: Topic of providing acknowledgement on behalf of our club for loss or significant illness or injury to a club member, immediate family. Discussion follows regarding donation guidelines, etc. After discussion, motion made by Scott Woodland and seconded by all to provide a sunshine liaison who will send a proper greeting card on behalf of our club. Should extenuating circumstances occur which warrant action such as a donation or flowers, such will be discussed on a case-by-case basis rather than due course, for budgetary and consistency reasons. Notice will be given in the next issue of Golden Notes that Lisa Newton should be contacted and she will forward a notecard on behalf of our club with appropriate condolences or well wishes. Puppy Referral: The Blanchards will continue to assist with litter listings with the board s support for their discretion in managing referrals NATIONAL: Eileen reports that we are still awaiting our contracts with the fairgrounds, and that based on recent show management, we should not expect to receive revenue from parking and RV parking, which typically provides much income for the clubs. Such will be absorbed by the fairgrounds rather than go to our coffers. Electricity has been problematic in recent years and we do not know why, possibly an environmental issue with the fairgrounds. Discussion regarding trophy suggestions. Metal sculptures such as those sold by vendor at Del Valle shows last year are suggested. We need to provide a budget so ample lead time, such as two years, are given to trophy vendor to create and provide whatever we decide to offer. Robin will follow up once she is given a budget estimate. Further discussion regarding offering vendor bucks for agility placements other than first place which perhaps should be a trophy. Agreed that National committee meetings need to be held every other month. Potential date is agreed upon, Saturday May 18, 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., at Cypress facility if available. Present board members and officers will attend National committee meetings. There being no further business, meeting adjourned at 2:15 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Lisa Newton Secretary, Norcal Golden Retriever Club AGILITY TRIAL REPORT I would like to THANK all my tireless workers who helped out at our first May Agility Trial. 8 How Long Does It Take For A Car to Get Hot? OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE TEMPERATURE IN CAR TIME IT TAKES TO REACH minutes 30 minutes 5 minutes 7~10 minutes 30 minutes 15 minutes Every summer, animals left in unattended cars suffer brain damage and die from heatstroke: On mild or cloudy days, with windows open, a parked vehicle quickly becomes a furnace. Car windows act to both absorb the sun's rays and insulate your vehicle: The inside of a car can heat up to 110 degrees Fahrenheit in only ten minutes on an 80º day Install shade blinds on car windows and never leave animals unattended. A car can quickly become an oven. Also, animals left alone are vulnerable to theft. Your companions are as vulnerable to sunburn and skin cancer as you are and may require sunscreen on their nose and ears. Light-colored animals are particularly sensitive to the sun. Take special precautions with old or overweight animals, or those with heart or lung diseases, in hot weather. Snub-nosed dogs (bulldogs, Pekingese, Boston terriers, Lhasa apsos, Pugs, Shih Tzus, etc.) have compromised respiratory systems and must be kept in air-conditioning. Heat Stroke in Dogs/Cats Stroke is a dangerous condition that takes the lives of many animals every year. A dog s normal body temp is 99.5~102.5º. At 105~106º, the pet is at risk for developing heat exhaustion. If the body temperature rises to 107º, your pet has entered the critical zone of heat stroke. With heat stroke, irreversible damage and death can occur. At Highest Risk: puppies to 6 months; older (large breeds 7+ years, small breeds 14+); short muzzle/snout; snort/wide head; ill~overweight~over-exerted; black or thick coats; dehydrated; ANY existing medical conditions. DANGER SIGNS: rapid panting bright red tongue red or pale gums thick, sticky saliva depression weak/dizzy vomiting/diarrhea shock coma An overheating dog may appear sluggish, unresponsive or disorientated... probably panting hard. Gums, tongue and conjunctiva of the eyes may be bright red. He may even start vomiting. Eventually he will collapse, suffer a seizure and may go into a coma. A heat-stricken animal can die in minutes but proper care may save its life. If you think your companion is suffering from heatstroke, immediately remove him or her to a cool, shady area. Try to slowly lower the animal's temperature by placing in cool, not cold, water. Apply ice to the head and neck. Get to a veterinarian as soon as possible as follow-up care will be critical to his survival. AUTHORITIES HAVE BEEN ALERTED! HAVE NOT
