1 NORCAL GOLDEN RETRIEVER CLUB Golden Notes MARCH/APRIL 2010 VOLUME 40, ISSUE I Elected Officers: President Eileen Oshiro Secretary/ Treasurer Wendy Silveira 1425 Essex Wy San Jose, CA VP Performance Terry Southard VP Breed Jeanetta Gulden VP Field Debbie Tandoc Director Nancy Kelly Director Linda Lang Standing Officials Financial Secretary Patty Simmons Membership Secretary Gina King President s Message First of all, I wanted to thank the NORCAL membership for their confidence in electing me their President. I ll do my best and I know that with all of your help, NORCAL will be better and stronger than ever. Special thanks to outgoing President, Laura Finco, for her years as President. No, Laura doesn t get to relax as Editor of Golden Notes, is on the Specialty Steering Committee, and of course, is heavily involved with CDOC. Dimity Mueller has served for years as our Obedience Vice President, been the Specialty Obedience Chair, and of course, chaired the fabulous Obedience workshop at the Cow Palace for several years. What will we do without them? Continue with our members volunteering, of course! 2010 saw us active from the get-go with the annual Obedience workshop and annual banquet and meeting in January. Last month we had the special training day at Ornbaum s, led by Debbie Tandoc and Diane Glassmeyer. I ve heard nothing but compliments on the great time had by all. Diane went beyond the call of duty, going into the water with several dogs, letting them know it was okay. Thank you! Upcoming events include the WC/WCX at Ornbaun s, general meeting, CCA evaluations, and conformation/ obedience/rally match at Kirigin Cellars. And of course, our annual Specialty Show at the Pleasanton Fairgrounds. These events are for you and your Goldens. It s up to all of us to support the club with help and participation or we won t be able to continue. Please contact any Board member or event chair to offer your support. NORCAL is deeply saddened with the death of one of our own Harry Carpenter. Our love and condolences to Sue, Kim, and Kris Carpenter. 2 GOLDEN NOTES Page 2 Editor s Bark Argus Rise of the Phoenix, CD, OA, OA Dogs are not our whole lives but they make our lives whole Roger Caras.Little over a month ago, I was woken up at 5 am by my girl, Spice, as she began to go into labor with her second litter. In the first couple of hours, she gave birth to two girls and a boy and then took an hour long break. The fourth puppy was born and then she stopped having contractions for several hours. I had been in contact with our veterinarian who said it was not uncommon for a long break. Sure enough, puppy Number Five was born. He was a big boy weighing in at little over 16 ounces. Since this was going to be The Olympian Litter, this big boy was properly nicknamed, Zeus. After his birth, we all took a much needed rest. However, the rest was much longer than I was comfortable with. Hours went by but again, I was assured by our veterinarian that everything was okay. Having done a pre-whelp x- ray, we knew there were two more puppies still to be born. After a couple more hours, I called back and told the receptionist that we were coming in. I loaded up the litter into a laundry basket, got Spice, and we all drove to the vet. After the ultrasound showed two very weak heartbeats it was decided to rescue these pups by C- section. Thankfully, everything went well and all seven Olympians are doing great, growing into beautiful Golden fluff balls. I was grateful for the mentoring I had received from others involved in breeding. I learned from them what they routinely did in preparation of whelping as well as in rearing puppies. It was this collective knowledge that helped me be assertive and proactive. One of the benefits of NOR- CAL membership is the talents of others in so many areas. Within this issue of Golden Notes you will notice some of the opportunities we have to learn from other members Animal CPR to Field Training to Conformation Assessment to Legislative Action. There are so many chances for us to share our talents. Unfortunately, the beginning of 2010 has brought sadness to the NORCAL GRC family, as noted in the President Message and from Sue, herself. Harry Carpenter lost his battle with cancer and although the loss is sad, we celebrate his life and the ones he loved. If only each of us could have so much to give as Harry did. We also experienced much Golden loss as we say farewell to many of our senior Goldens. Many of these were our firsts but all of them will continue to live deep in the hearts they left behind. In Memoriam Harry Carpenter Harry Carpenter passed away after a valiant fight with lung cancer. I've not only lost my husband but my true partner and the best dad ever to Kim and Kristen. While Goldens weren't his breed he loved every one we had and supported me in all of my golden activites even though English Springers were his breed and love. He always complained lovingly of our goldens out numbering his springers! I have a quilt I made (with a golden in the center) that I have donated to the club for the raffle at the specialty this Fall in Harry's honor. Sue, Kim, and Kristen Carpenter!

In fact it will be blazing if she has her way. My "Angel" left my home and went to the Bridge Saturday evening around 7:30 p.m. She had a seizure disorder (cause suspected but not known) as of last July and had done very well on her therapy and under my watchful eye. Early Saturday morning she had a seizure cluster from which she was not recovering well enough to go on. At a ripe old age of 14 yrs and 2+ months, I could not ask her to try. She certainly went out on her terms, and I have said all along that is what she would do - here today, gone tomorrow. She was very dignified, although very sassy. I can't remember even one meal missed, expect maybe when she ate the kitchen towel and obstructed. She jammed around the veterans ring with gusto, and turned on the jets when she was able to hear the applause for the veterans. She absolutely loved the ring and desperately wanted to be an agility dog, but I could never trust her off lead. So, she enjoyed anything she could make into a tunnel or jump at home. I have her daughter and grandson at my home, so her legacy lives on; and she will forever have a piece of my heart. Enjoy your new home, Angel-baby. 6 Certificate of Conformation Assessment Suzanne Bria Mark your calendars! NORCAL GRC will hold our 4th (annual!) Certificate of Conformation Assessment (CCA) event on Sunday, July 25, 2010 in Lafayette, CA. We should have room for at least 18 dogs. The premium list will be published in April/May, at which time NORCAL GRC members will receive early notification and a chance to enter before entries are open to the general golden public. **WE WILL NOT ACCEPT EARLY ENTRIES** For those unfamiliar with the CCA program, this is an opportunity for you to have your goldens (who are at least 18 months old) evaluated in accordance with the breed standard by three distinguished breeder-judges who have been approved by the GRCA to be CCA evaluators. It is a wonderful, non-competitive educational opportunity! More information on the CCA can be found on the GRCA website: You can also print out the program guidelines: events/cca/ccaprogramoutline.pdf Here is an excellent article on the history of the CCA: grca.org/pdf/events/cca/dreamdog.pdf Questions? call the CCA coordinator Suzanne Bria at Field Vice President Report Debbie Tandoc The Evan Graham Field Training Seminar will be presented on May 14th and 15th at the Denverton Property in Suisun City. The main point of this seminar is NOT train-the-dog. These seminar days are spent making every effort to train-the-trainer. Participant s dogs will be involved in demonstrating the basic obedience skills, various drills and problem solving. Dogs that are registered participants will have at least one opportunity to get help with a problem (rather, the handler get assistance on a problem) or be a demo dog for a particular learning or teaching point. Evan will cover complete E-collar conditioning, as well as practical usage in the field. It is hoped that trainers will leave this seminar with a better understanding as to when and how to use it. Any and all questions about this topic are welcome and encouraged. It is Evan s central objective that seminar participants are in some substantive way, better trainers when they leave Saturday evening than they were when we began Friday morning. There will be Q&A (question and answer) sessions at the end of each day. All those participating are strongly encouraged to take notes, and ask any questions they may have. Fair and effective dog training has more to do with sound principles than it does with any magic drills or procedures. Evan will focus on not just what skills to teach your dog, but how to do it so you are being a fair team member. Anyone who leaves this seminar with unanswered questions will do so by not having asked them, within the scope of available time and resources. For more information/details on this seminar, contact Debbie Tandoc goldendpin@aol.com, or the Norcal Events page For more information on Evan Graham, his books, DVD s and training philosophies: or review the Basics Flow Chart in Golden Notes.

If you have ever wondered why the term drill comes up so much in dog training these days, you have just discovered an answer. Drills offer repeated exposure to focused concepts in training. As dogs repeat any specific concept in their work they develop and deepen habits of behavior. That also makes drill work a great way to cure bad habits by literally replacing them with good habits. Start your drills with a simple, easy standard. Short distances help to keep control of the dog low key, and allow the dog to succeed easily at the focus of the drill. Gradually extend distance to deepen the new habit by extending and deepening skill levels, like holding a straight line in water in the presence of a tempting shoreline. This can be done by running many cheating single marks with diagonal shoreline exits, and/or Tune up drills that have numerous water blinds with varying degrees of diagonal exit, at slightly increasing distances. These exercises promote a solid standard of not falling for shoreline suction. By strengthening the core skills involved, your dog can soon return to full-scale fieldwork with his new sound habits intact, requiring far fewer corrections. Further, he will have experienced so much success that his attitudes toward the standards he once resisted will have softened considerably.
