I don't want to steal Debbie Tandoc's thunder, but we all had such a great time! And the weather...a little of this, a little of that, and then something else. From cold, windy, rains to warm, sunny afternoons. And of course it was all reversed with the land series cold and wet and the water warm and sunny. Crazy. But highly successful! Thanks to Chair Janet Wood and her committee of Debbie Tandoc, Diane Glassmeyer, Mark Berman and Betty Mason. Secretary Pam MacDonald kept us organized and in the know. On a personal note, I'm thrilled that Jet passed! A very busy summer is upon us. From the CCA, to the Beat the Heat Match this summer and on the Specialty in October, we will be busy working with our Goldens. Please be sure to help out where you can. This is your club. Without your help, none of this is possible. Eileen Oshiro suntorygr@comcast.net NORCAL WC/WCX TEST JUNE 5 TH Or It takes a village to put on a Field Event! 2 GOLDEN NOTES Editor s Bark Summertime Page 2 Argus Rise of the Phoenix, CD, AX, AXJ Dogs are not our whole lives but they make our lives whole Roger Caras Summer is one of my favorite seasons. The weather warms up, less chance of rain, and because of my job as a teacher, I have more time for projects and especially more time for the pups. This is the time of year when I spend a lot of time in my backyard, cleaning up from the unseasonal rains. The pups have been enjoying watching me pull weeds and literally mow the gravel in the agility yard. The old grass underneath took full advantage of the weather. I refuse to use any chemical herbicide or weed killer so that means a lot of pulling. My sister found a recipe using vinegar that I am tempted to use but fear that my furr-kids will think I am making them a big yard salad. Either way, I am making some progress on the yard and am beginning to enjoy it once again. At least we can see the bottom of the A-frame! Another part of the summer though is less enjoyable and that s the heat. I was at the veterinarian the other day and we were talking about the heat. My vet was saying that they have yet to have a heat stroke patient but thought it would be any day. Ironically, as I was leaving the vet I noticed the car parked next to mine. The windows were slightly rolled down. And right underneath the PETA decal, was a small dog and another on the seat spread out as long as she could be. The car was not in the shade and it was already nearing 90 degrees outside. I didn t know what disgusted me more the dogs left in the car or the PETA decal. Then I realized, it was both! Bottom line, even in seemingly cool 80 degree weather in the summer, it takes just a few minutes for it to heat up to 120 degrees in a car. At this temperature, a dog suffers. I keep little flyers from the AKC about heat risks in my car and posted one on the windshield. Don t know if it changed the mind of the owner (probably upset her more that it came from someone associated with AKC than anything else), but I couldn t leave without pointing out the fact that leaving a dog in a car during warm weather can be hazardous. Keep your pets safe this summer and stay as cool as possible. NORCAL GRC s annual specialty will be held on Saturday, October 22, 2011 in the lovely tree shaded orchard at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton. The trophy chairperson, Cindy Garcia, has chosen a lovely selection of awards for the specialty. Trophy donations are now being accepted. 5 Page 5 AKC Introduces New Therapy Dog Title An exciting new title is now open to all AKC dogs. The AKC Therapy Dog title, or "THD," launched June 27th as an official AKC suffix title and will reward dogs and their owners that have provided ongoing community service to help improve the well being of others. Currently, it is estimated there are 50,000 certified and active therapy dogs in the United States. Volunteerism has exploded over the past decade, especially those with dog and owner teams working in schools, hospitals, nursing homes, and at natural disasters. The AKC annually recognizes an outstanding Therapy Dog as part of the annual AKC Humane Fund Awards for Canine Excellence (ACE). We receive so many great nominations that we know there are many more dogs out there that deserve recognition. We have also received many requests from the fancy to award titles to therapy dogs as a way to recognize the "great work their dogs do." Additionally, earning a THD title builds on the skills taught in the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy and Canine Good Citizen programs, which create a sound and friendly temperament needed by a successful therapy dog. The AKC will not certify therapy dogs. Instead, we're working with therapy dog certification organizations to recognize the work done by therapy teams. The certification organizations are the experts in this area and their efforts should be acknowledged and appreciated. The title will be open to all AKC dogs that have completed a series of criteria. To qualify, dogs must be certified by a participating therapy dog certification organization and have performed a minimum of 50 community service visits. To obtain a title an owner must complete an application along with evidence of documented visits. Application forms are available on the website at The program will accept documentation going back to January 1, If your dog qualifies we encourage you to apply for the title. For more information visit or akctherapydog@akc.org. American Kennel Club, Inc. NORCAL GRC RESPONSIBLE DOG OWNER DAY NORCAL GRC will once again host our Annual RDO event in conjunction with our Beat the Heat Match. The RDO event will include information for dog owners about responsible ownership, the benefits of training, and proper dog care. The public will have the chance to participate in the AKC Canine Good Citizen program. There will be an obedience and rally workshop along with a conformation match. The match is open to mixed breed dogs as well as purebred dogs. There will also be a mixed breed conformation match. NORCAL GRC members who can volunteer with the conformation match and Canine Good Citizen Test should contact Laura Finco at lfinco@aol.com

6 NORCAL GOLDEN RETRIEVER CLUB'S 52nd SPECIALTY SHOW SATURDAY, OCTOBER 22ND, 2011 ALAMEDA COUNTY FAIRGROUNDS, 4501 PLEASANTON AVENUE PLEASANTON, CALIFORNIA MID-YEAR SPECIALTY SHOW REPORT In January 2011, 22 generous Norcal members and friends of the GRC stepped up and volunteered to chair committees for this year s Specialty show. These team leaders needed support to carry out their show duties. In the April edition of Golden Notes and on the club website, the event Co-Chairs put out a Call-to-Action, asking for members to sign up to fill out the committees. Eight volunteers responded, three of which were brand-new members and one of which was a prospective member, which is very exciting! From the membership, Bea Moore led the way, followed by Dimity Mueller and Terry Southard and Janet Hess. However, we have not yet gotten any team support for our Raffle Chairs or our Hospitality Chair. We need at least five members to help Susan Osborn and Kathy McIntyre with Raffle. There is a need for gathering and storing raffle items, wrapping them, displaying them, selling tickets, and drawing the winners. We would like to acknowledge and thank Norcal member Charlotte Gaynor for generously donating $500-worth of superb raffle items in January She got us off to a fantastic start! We need at least five members to sign up to help Trish Miller, 2011 Hospitality Chair, with planning, procuring, and preparing provisions for the Specialty breakfast, snacks, and lunch. This is a center-stage committee, and Trish has asked us for lots of help so she can offer a delicious and appetizing menu to members and judges! We are looking for a support person for Rodney Fong in Catalog Ads. Rodney is not a club member, but he has performed this service for Norcal for three years. He has asked for a member to back him up in September. We would love to have help for Patty Simmons in Obedience, and Suzanne Bria in Rally, and Cindy Garcia in Conformation. We are looking for one or more members to help do marked catalogs on the day of the show. We are looking for additional canopies to borrow for the day. We would like to use neutral colors for the Information Center, Raffle, and Hospitality. This month, Patty Simmons will be sending out requests for Trophy Sponsorship. We hope that members will support this effort as they generously have in the past. After the show premiums go out, we will be taking orders for Specialty Catalog Ads. We are asking the membership to consider taking out or selling an ad for this year s catalog. If you cannot volunteer, these kinds of donations are a perfect way to help make the Specialty a great success! The event chairs are so grateful to Patty Simmons and Christine Hsu for weekly, if not daily, guidance and resource support. They are the unofficial Co-Chairs to the Co-Chairs! Respectfully submitted, Suzanne Mikolajcik 2011 Specialty Co-Chair szm2@comcast.net or (707) to volunteer or donate!

7 From page 1 It was a dark and stormy night before the WC/WCX, and the village was nervous. The Denverton property can be wretched in bad weather, with gale force winds, driving rain, and mud mud mud. It was not looking good! Prayers were invoked, and sacrifices were made to the weather deities. The dog gods smiled, and Sunday morning broke with grey skies, but no rain or wind. With the exception of one brief shower the rain held off throughout the day. Or maybe it was just that everyone brought their raingear Judges and helpers showed up early to finalize test setup. Equipment and signs went out to the respective test areas. Birds were delivered. Handlers signed in and proceeded to pace. Wind direction, terrain, and cover were pondered to determine best setup. Distances were measured to make sure marks were within regulations. Pop-ups were set up for judges. Instructions were given to gunners and throwers. Flyers were dispatched and throws were practiced to make sure everything was JUST RIGHT. We had record entries this year 27 WC and 28 WCX. In keeping with NORCAL s tradition of welcoming other retriever breeds who have similar Working Certificate and Working Certificate Excellent programs our entries included 7 Flatcoat Retrievers, 5 Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers, and 1 Poodle. When everything was JUST RIGHT, handlers were called to the line. Both tests began on land. Judges carefully reviewed test rules and regulations with nervous handlers and answered questions. Everyone was reminded that we do this field stuff for FUN, and that each dog/handler team would be given every opportunity to be successful. Test dogs were run. Any remaining questions were answered and the tests began. Teams came to the line and gave it their best shot. The land series finished just as lunches were delivered. The break allowed folks to visit and catch up with each other. Then, it was on to the water series. Once again, wind direction and water configuration was pondered to determine best setup. Distances were measured to make sure marks were within regulations. Flyers were dispatched and throws were practiced to make sure everything was JUST RIGHT. Handlers were again called to the line, and test dogs were run. When all questions were answered the water series commenced. In the WORKING CERTIFICATE, dogs are judged on a double on land and back-to-back singles on water. The test is designed to demonstrate the following natural abilities of a retriever: Accurate marking, memory of falls, intelligence, attention, style, good nose, perseverance, desire, and trainability. The emphasis in the WC is on natural abilities. Well on June 5 th those natural abilities were demonstrated very well 19 dogs qualified! At the WORKING CERTIFICATE EXCELLENT level training is more demanding, as the requirements are greater. The dog must be steady and must retrieve a triple on land, a double on water, and honor the next working dog. This test is to encourage the development of the Golden Retriever s natural hunting and retrieving abilities through additional training. The WCX dog/handler teams stepped up that day, with 19 qualifiers. At the conclusion of the water series the village hustled to bring equipment, birds, signs, and stake boxes back to the trailer. Entrants who ordered birds were taken care of. Paperwork was checked and double-checked to make sure all was in order, and qualifiers were announced. With congratulations and applause all around, NORCAL s drop-dead gorgeous WC/WCX ribbons were given out to the proud handlers. Arguably the best part of the day was watching these same proud handlers struggle to get their rambunctious dogs lined up together for the group photos. Highly-trained retrievers running amuck! With commands, entreaties, shuffling and reshuffling all were lined up. As official duck call blower I had the pleasure of seeing all those alert and happy dogs and handlers looking JUST RIGHT! Janet Wood Chair, 2011 NORCAL WC/WCX Ps. More good news to report: the event showed a profit of slightly over $ Not too shabby in these times! Minutes of General Meeting of Norcal Golden Retriever Club Date: May 29, 2011 Meeting called to order 12:03 p.m. at Jones Lake In attendance: President Eileen Oshiro, Secretary Lisa Newton, VP Performance Terry Southard, Director Linda Lang, general members and also new member applicant Michelle Pressel. Welcome! SECRETARY S REPORT: No correspondence to report. Letters to AKC/GRCA listing current officers and directors have been sent. Board minutes will be posted to Norcal Board yahoo group. TREASURER S REPORT: None. BREED REPORT: (Via from Jeanetta Gulden): Specialty 2011: Suzanne Mikolajcik needs about 35 more volunteers for various assignments and asks that all board members be available to help. Jeanetta let her know the board will be available throughout the show and afterwards for clean-up and prep for the General Meeting.

8 Awards Banquet: As an update on the Awards Banquet venue, Laura Finco has a suggestion which has been forwarded to Suzanne Bria and Suzanne Fortner for consideration. Regarding upcoming Specalties, Eileen Oshiro states nothing to report for Specialty Noted that Dimity Mueller and Terry Southard will chair this year s wine and cheese party at the General Meeting on day of Specialty Discussion: We can do DNA testing if we have a member or two to perform the blood draws. Mike Lappin can do the testing for us. June Smith suggests we also offer Optigen PRA test. This test is more expensive to do, approximately $135 per dog. We will poll club for interest level. AGILITY REPORT: Linda Lang reports dates for agility trial this year are Sunday and Monday. It is a four day trial, and Oakland DTC, with which we share the event, would like to switch every year from Friday/Saturday to Sunday/Monday so event is fair for all involved. Money is shared evenly between the two clubs. Dates will be corrected on the website to reflect this change. PERFORMANCE REPORT: Terry Southard reports we are still in need of stewards and a coordinator for hospitality for the summer match. Dimity Mueller has sent s requesting help directly to members but we are not getting a response from the membership. We need a hospitality organizer. It can be as simple has having pizza brought to the site, but we need an organizer/coordinator. We could use one more relief judge. The following members have stepped up to help and we thank them in advance: Suzanne Bria is in charge of Rally, Laura Finco for Conformation ring/cgc, Christine Hsu and Don McKay in charge of setup, Ron and Patty Simmons, in charge of stewards with Lettie Regan. We need a lot more stewards. We have to pay the permit fee of $700 again ($200 to Kirigin and $500 to county). That, coupled with the distance to the location, although beautiful, has us looking at other sites for future matches. Entries for upcoming match are starting to come in. FIELD REPORT: (Sent via by Debbie Tandoc): Norcal had a busy spring in the field a March duck flyer day, annual March hunt test, two picnic trial training days organized by Nancy Corbin, and a May pheasant flyer day. March Hunt test chaired by Jean Mott and Cheryl Baca made a profit of $780. Norcal s first Pheasant Flyer Day on May 14 was a huge success. Dogs and handlers got to train on two WC or WCX land setups with a shot flyer in each if they chose. Many hands make lighter work and everyone did their share. Some went WAY beyond. The club benefitted with a $395 profit from the day. Debbie notes that on Pheasant Day both the WC and WCX groups finished in record time. Leftover pheasants were well used for a group honor at the end of the day and most dogs got another flyer on a single mark. All of the gunners got a turn as well and it was a blast. Plus, the gunners had fun taking their dogs out to hunt up the lost flyers that hit the Denverton jet stream and soared out of gun range. The consensus from those in attendance at the flyer days is to have as many of these training events as can be organized. It appears that three a year is do-able: a duck day in early spring, a pheasant day a few weeks before the WC/X, and a September/fall duck day before any fall tests. Debbie is considering some changes to improve future flyer days to help even out the length of the day for everyone. One possibility is mixing the group levels, as in the past the Junior/WC level group has finished very early and on one occasion had to wait for water, whereas the Senior/Master/WCX group takes much longer. The March 5 Duck Flyer Day had fewer entries, but still earned a $160 profit. Discussion follows: Comments made regarding idea of combining Junior/WC and advanced level groups at flyer days, no one is enthusiastic at first blush. All are in favor of continuing with these training days, however. Nancy Corbin is in need of a winger, bird rack, and two holding blinds for picnic trial use. She did not receive any birds from the hunt test but is hopeful of getting some from the WC/WCX. FUNDRAISING: Terry Southard reports no seminars are scheduled for this year; possible seminar next year on the subject of reproduction. GENERAL BUSINESS: Eileen reports a complaint received from a spectator at the spring hunt test, and reminds all members that we are representing our club at these events and to please keep that in mind when dealing with others including the general public. Reminder we are here to promote our goldens and the sporting events in which they participate. As noted from Debbie s report, a duck day is being planned for September. Debbie Tandoc is considering changes to help balance the day better with regard to junior/senior and WC/ WCX. We have 27 WC and 27 WCX entries for upcoming test. Spare ducks and pheasant can be purchased live or shot at end of the day. Nancy Corbin has the WC/WCX DVD s for Debbie; Eileen will transport them. Nancy also reports a few problems with getting information posted timely to the website for picnic trials, etc. Discussion regarding confusion over last picnic trial notice, inadvertent error, such has been resolved. It is noted that test secretary Pam McDonald has spent many hours putting all the WC/X information for the entries/ catalog into an Excel program for this year and future use. Thank you, Pam! OLD BUSINESS: None. NEW BUSINESS: Eileen received an from Stephanie Smith regarding junior achievement award but it was not received timely for any submission. Laura Finco would like information/write up on picnic trials, field events, photos, highlights of Norcal GRC for the GRCA News field issue. Meeting adjourned at 12:50 p.m. and picnic trial resumed. THE REPORTS BELOW WERE RECEIVED FOLLOWING THE GENERAL MEETING: CCA: (Via from Suzanne Bria to Jeanetta Gulden): Everything is going well. Evaluators Ainslie Mills, Debbie Claussen and Barb Branstad are confirmed, travel arrangements have been made for the two evaluators who are from out of the area. This cost will only be partially absorbed by increase in entry fee, so do not expect a profit. Valerie Anderson is coordinating stewards and Suzanne Fortner is doing hospitality. Linda Lang will be in charge of the evaluators, Steve Southard will take photos for the GRCA. Secretaries are Toni Maita and Christine Hsu. Venue is Lafayette Community Center. Ribbons will be ordered. Event is full with 21 on waiting list.
