1 NORCAL GOLDEN RETRIEVER CLUB Golden Notes Elected Officers: President Eileen Oshiro Secretary/ Treasurer Wendy Silveira 1425 Essex Wy San Jose, CA VP Performance Terry Southard VP Breed Jeanetta Gulden VP Field Debbie Tandoc Director Nancy Kelly Director Linda Lang Standing Officials Financial Secretary Patty Simmons Membership Secretary Suzanne Bria OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2010 From the President Eileen Oshiro NORCAL just completed its 51 st annual Specialty Show! Led by Jeanetta Gulden and Laura Franchi, the Specialty ran smoothly and a great time was had by all. Even the rain (yes, rain in October!) held off until Best of Breed and wasn t as heavy as predicted. All the judges were knowledgeable and courteous to all exhibitors. That has always been the goal in picking our judges. This year Skyline KC joined the Del Valle show weekend, so we had 5 days of shows. All 5 days had majors and they held! That in itself is cause for cheering as majors have been hard to come by recent years. As expected, there was a little more work and uncertainty with having another club involved, but everything worked out. Another busy year is coming to an end and the days are getting shorter. Certainly harder to get in training between work and chores, but try telling that to our Goldens! HA! You re tired? Too bad. It s dark? So what. It s raining? Great! Let s go do something track, obedience, some bird work, agility, etc. Truthfully, there never was enough time to get it all in. We just do what we can and the dogs accept anything as long as we do it together. Give them a hug and grab that leash. And remember, we need your help to put on all these events! 2 GOLDEN NOTES Page 2 Editor s Bark Argus Rise of the Phoenix, CD, AX, AXJ Dogs are not our whole lives but they make our lives whole Roger Caras U.S. Route 66 is lovingly known as the Main Street of America. One of the original highways, Route 66 was established in 1926 and was the portal for many Americans to come West. During the Dust Bowl, Route 66 was the major path of migrants who did business along the way. Route 66 was officially removed from the United States Highway System in 1985 after it was replaced with faster and safer roadways. It survives today as part of the National Scenic Byway. On the 75th anniversary of the Route, I had an impulse to drive this famous road. So I loaded up one of my best friends, Keegan and headed to Victorville, CA where we began our adventure. We drove on as much of the actual highway as possible, approximately 85% of the way. As we traveled, Keegan rode right in the middle of my Explorer serving as navigator to make sure I stayed on the right path. The Mother Road was well marked thanks to the dedicated work of the Route 66 Associations throughout. We visited every piece of Americana that we could along the way from a street corner in Winslow, AZ to the Giant Launch Pad in Chicago, IL. We stopped in Tulsa, OK for a couple of days to pay our respects to the bombing victims before making our way through St. Louis and up to our final destination. On our return trip, we drove the Oregon Trial with a special stop in the Field of Dreams. This trip, though long in my past will always remain a highlight. It was special because it was something done just for me and my golden boy. Keegan passed away a short time after this trip but the memories are as fresh as though it just happened. One of the wonderful aspects of being loved by a dog are the moments that freeze in time in our hearts. Beat the Heat Fun Match Kirigin Cellars This event was a huge success, thanks in particularly to the efforts of Terry Southard, match chair and her entire committee. Special thanks to all of the volunteers who came out to help set up, steward, judge, and especially the hospitality crew! The Beat the Heat Match is NORCAL GRC s annual Responsible Dog Owner Day, a requirement for us to be able to hold our Specialty Show and Obedience Trial. This event could not take place without the support of the club!

3 GOLDEN NOTES Page 3 AKC s Breeder of Merit Program The American Kennel Club (AKC ) announced today the launch of the Breeder of Merit program, a new initiative designed to recognize AKC s core breeders. "The Breeder of Merit program allows the American Kennel Club to celebrate our dedicated, passionate breeders who truly are the backbone of the sport and the foundation of our organization," said AKC s Chief Operating Officer John Lyons. "Our Breeders of Merit are committed to both improving their breed through health testing and selective breeding programs, and proving their breed through achievements in the ring and the field. They are special and will be emulated by new breeders entering the sport. Being a successful breeder does not come easy. Years of hard work, vision, and a willingness to do the right thing are required to be successful. Our Breeders of Merit have these qualities and deserve to be recognized." To achieve the Breeder of Merit designation, breeders should: Certify that applicable health screens are performed on the sire and dam as recommended by the Parent Club. Hold membership in an AKC club. Have a history of at least 5 years involvement with AKC events. Earn Conformation, Companion and/or Performance titles on at least 4 dogs they have bred/co-bred. Demonstrate their commitment to ensuring 100% of the puppies they produce are AKC registered. As part of the Breeder of Merit program, breeders will receive: Complimentary access to $20.00 value per month for free online reports in the AKC online store. Access to the AKC Direct toll free number. Online Record support to ensure that their records are accurate, complete and easily accessible. A frameable certificate of distinction. Free Online Breeder Classified listings along with a special Breeder of Merit designation. Acknowledgement on a special page of the AKC website and in the AKC Gazette. Director Linda Lang reported that the Labor Day weekend agility trial was smaller ( ) than in recent years when we maxed out (600), but the trials have been trending downward this year. The November agility trials on schedule, but would members would be welcome to help. Breed: Jeanetta reported rings, tables and chairs ordered for Specialty. Electrical drop has been requested. Raffle donations requested by Tammy Bellew and Dimity could use rally and obedience stewards. Clean-up crew needs volunteers.
